FANS' FURY OVER TICKET CHAOS
14 Apr 2008 by Villy
An elderly couple who queued in the cold for nearly three hours at Home Park for premium Westlife tickets were told there were none available - because most had been reserved for corporate clients.

Nancy and Peter Osborne, who are in their 70s, waited for two £65 Golden Circle tickets with money they had been given by their daughter to celebrate their Golden Wedding.

They started queuing at 8.20am for the tickets to go on sale at 9am yesterday, but the office was so busy they were not served until 11.10am.

Nancy said: "It is pretty shoddy really. We have better things to do at our age than stand in the cold for three hours."

The couple were just one of scores of other pop fans left disappointed after sales of the Golden Circle tickets descended into confusion. Many people vented their frustration on The Herald's website.

FANS BRAVE SNOW FOR MEAT LOAF AND WESTLIFE
14 Apr 2008 by Villy
More than a dozen fans queued through the night in the snow at Home Park and hundreds more arrived early to buy tickets for Westlife and Meat Loaf.

Five hundred fans were waiting despite near-freezing temperatures when the box office opened at 9am to start selling tickets for the back-to-back June gigs.

The first Westlife fans arrived at the car park gates of Argyle?s ground at 9pm last night and there was a steady trickle of people through the night.

The queue reached out of the car park gate as far as the Mayflower sports centre.

First in the queue was Kathy Holden, aged 40, from Efford.

She said: "When it snowed and when it rained I was standing out here. It was freezing. This is the second time I have seen them. And I only like one of them, Nicky. It drives my husband mad."

Some of those who queued through the night were not even buying tickets for themselves. Brenda Edwards, aged 51, was buying a ticket for her daughter Tracey.

She said: "I can't go myself because someone has to babysit the grandchildren. We even had a policeman visit us in the night to make sure we were all right."

Members of Plymouth Argyle ladies football team made a last-minute decision to start queuing at about 2am and turned up wearing light coats, jogging bottoms and trainers.

Chloe Roberts, aged 17, said: "Our clothing has been a bit of a problem, we only had a match yesterday."

Fellow player Carmen Thornton, also 17, added: "We sat in the car for much of the night, it was nice and warm."

About 20 places back, Jane Eslick from Tavistock was the first in the queue for Meat Loaf. She turned up just after 5am to buy tickets for husband Scott and son Ashley.

She said: "It has been okay, I have bought food and clothing and something to read. It is a bit strange being surrounded by Westlife fans but I can handle that."

Meat Loaf is playing on Friday, June 27, and Westlife are playing the following day. The dates are part of Plymouth's Summer Festival and follow up the success of George Michael and Elton John at Home Park last year.

Home Park spokesman Rick Cowdery said: "The fact fans were willing to queue through the snow for the best tickets in the house shows their dedication, and the popularity of these shows on the back of Elton John and George Michael last year shows we are putting Home Park on the map as a concert venue."

As reported in Saturday's Herald, tickets went on sale at Home Park at 9am and will go on sale online and over the phone via Ticketmaster later in the day.

MEAT LOAF AND WESTLIFE TO PLAY HOME PARK
14 Apr 2008 by Villy
TRISTAN NICHOLS HERALD REPORTER

Two of the biggest music acts in the world will headline a music festival weekend at Plymouth Argyle's Home Park this summer.

Live and Kicking at Home Park will feature multi-million-selling superstars Westlife and Meat Loaf in back-to-back concerts.

The double-header is sure to be one of the highlights of the Plymouth Summer Festival, and follows last year's performances by Elton John and George Michael at the city stadium.

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Monday from the Home Park box office.

Meat Loaf, famous for his iconic Bat Out of Hell series of albums, will kick off the weekend with a high-octane gig on Friday, June 27.

Just 24 hours later, Irish boy band Westlife will take to the stage for what promises to be a second successive night to remember at Home Park.

Argyle chief executive Michael Dunford said: "We are delighted to have made these two huge summer signings.

"In terms of live shows, they do not come much bigger or better than Westlife and Meat Loaf.

"After last summer, we have a lot to live up to, and it is fantastic that we have been able to attract acts of this magnitude to Argyle.

"We know, from those experiences last year, there is a huge demand for quality open air music from the people of Plymouth and we know Live and Kicking at Home Park will more than satisfy that demand.

"Plymouth is developing a growing reputation, not only as a concert venue, but as one of the country's most go-ahead cities, and we are pleased to play our part in that."

Bill Martin, editor of The Herald, which is backing the Plymouth Summer Festival, said: "This year's festival promises to be the envy of the country boasting top-class maritime, music, arts and street events.

"To have two of the biggest stars of the pop world coming to Home Park is the icing on the cake."

As well as being available from 9am on Monday from the Home Park box office, tickets can also be booked later in the day over the phone on 0845 338 7232, or from Ticket Master on 0844 844 0444.

A booking fee of ten per cent of the ticket value will apply. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.ticketmaster.co.uk . Tickets will be limited to six per person.

Home Park will be divided into three areas for both concerts: a 'Golden Circle' of around 1,000 seats in front of the stage on the Mayflower Grandstand side of the ground; standing room on the remainder of the pitch; and seating in the Devonport, Lyndhurst and Barn Park stands.

Tickets for each show cost £65 for the Golden Circle, £45 for seating and £35 to stand. For corporate hospitality enquiries, contact the Argyle commercial department on 01752 302204, or email: andy.budge@pafc.co.uk.

Over the three months of the Plymouth Summer Festival, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the city.

Organisers have pledged this year's festival season - which includes 25 major events and more than 100 fringe activities - will be better than last year's award-winning inaugural event.

The line-up is set to include headline acts at the Plymouth Pavilions including a performance by Avril Lavigne, a production of Mary Poppins at the Theatre Royal and the epic and world-famous Artemis Transat Race at Sutton Harbour.

More information about the festival and its events can be viewed at www.plymouthsummerfestival.com.
