Life As I know It - 30 November 2006

Nicky Byrne

Westlife singer, 28, is married to Georgina Ahern, daughter of the Irish PM. They live in Dublin and are expecting their first child next year.

If I could change anything about myself I’d… be taller. I’m 5ft 10insbut I’d love to be over 6ft.

The most romantic thing anyone’s ever done for me is… I’ve been with Georgina for 12 years now and she’s always been very romantic. She arranged a surprise party for my birthday one year when my granddad wasn’t well. She said we were going for a quiet drink, but when we got to the bar it was packed with my friend and family. Everyone made such a big fuss of me.

Not a lot of people know this but I’m very good at… well, where do I start? I’m a good listener and I’ll always try to sort out my friends’ problems. I’m also a pretty decent cook. Last Valentine’s Day I cooked Georgina smoked haddock with onion on a bed of lettuce. I got the recipe out of a book, and she said it was fantastic.

To wake myself up I… always try to get out of bed with a positive attitude.

Last thing at night I always… call Georgina if I’m away, or if I’m at home we’ll usually sit and talk and have a kiss and a cuddle.

When I have time to myself I… go home to see my nana and grandpa. I spend a lot of time at the graveyard, too, where my other granddad is buried.

When I’m feeling down I… put on a good DVD. If I’m on my own I like watching comedies like Friends. Chandler’s my favourite.

My best friend is… my beautiful wife Georgina.

My “happy place” is… home, when I know things are OK with the band.

The best thing my parents taught me is… “remember you’re no better than anyone else and nobody’s better than you.”

If I can I always try to avoid… spending too long in one place. When I’m out shopping for instance, I like to get in and out as fast as I can, otherwise I usually end up doing a signing session.

It’s not good for my image but I like… eating, I’m addicted to chips.

My greatest weakness is… tea. I’m a tea perfectionist, so I usually like to make my own.

If I could pass any law it would be… that the weekend started on Thursday and finished on Tuesday.

The song I can never get out of my head is… last year it was James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful, The Black Eyed Peas have done some great songs and at the moment I keep humming James Morrison’s You Give Me Something.

I drive… a Range Rover, an Audi A4, a Cadilac Escalade that’s proving impossible to sell, and a Ferrari. The Ferrari’s my baby – it doesn’t get out that much but when it does it’s an absolute pleasure.

If I could be anyone else I’d be… Frank Sinatra. He had a great saying: “You only live once and if you live like me you only need to live once.”

My favourite song is… Celine Dion’s Because You Love Me. Georgina and I had it at our wedding and it’s definitely one I’d play on a romantic evening, and of course, The Rose by Westlife is a great love song.

When I was a child I wanted to be… a footballer or a police officer, but mostly a singer.

My biggest regret is… that when Brian left the band we weren’t more supportive. We tried to help, but we didn’t fully realise the problem he was experiencing in his marriage. I just hate to think that he was keeping his worries to himself.

My proudest moment… was getting married to Georgina, in a French chateau with a huge moat. It was so romantic.

The shop I can’t walk past without buying something is… any good show or trainer shop. I love to see what new lines have come in.

I always laugh at… Georgina when she puts on funny accents.

The most expensive thing I’ve splashed out on is… our house.

I know I’m having a bad hair day when… I start to freak out about it. Sometimes I just want to shave it all off, but I resist the urge because I’ve done that, and it didn’t look hot.

I love the smell of… Georgina’s cocoa butter body cream. It smells so delicious I could eat it.

The best day of my life was… my wedding day.

My favourite restaurant… is Nobu in London.

My last meal would be… chips, or chicken, cabbage, and potatoes cooked by my mum or nana.

Westlife’s The Love Album is out now. The band will play 11 UK dates next March and April.

More No.1 Plans - 30 November 2006

Westlife’s latest single, a cover of the Bette Midler classic The Rose, may have got to No.1 but I’ve learned the boys are annoyed because things didn’t go quite as they’d planned.

The boys had hoped that Bette, 60, would sing with them on the track. Sadly it wasn’t to be, as Bette said she had never heard of the group. But when she found out the song had gone straight to the top of the charts I’m told she was “mighty upset” that she had passed up the chance to sing.

Meanwhile insiders tell me the boys are looking at Lionel Richie as their next collaborator.

The Love Album No.5 In New Zealand - 29 November 2006

The New Albums

#5 Westlife - The Love Album

A third of this week’s new entries are by acts from the Emerald Isle. Boy band Westlife make a better start with this year’s The Love Album (new at #5) than with their last set, 2004’s swing covers release Allow Us To Be Frank, which didn’t chart. Their latest is another covers set including recent UK #1 The Rose, a remake of the Bette Midler tune (which reached #24 here) .The Irish lads made their New Zealand chart debut in November 1999 with the self-titled Westlife (#25).

Life Is Plane Crazy - 29 November 2006

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

WHEN your album has just shot to the top of the charts, things should be plane sailing. But Westlife hit a little turbulence last Sunday.

They were about to take off from Sydney when the plane's hydraulics packed up. All the passengers on the Qantas flight - the last UK-bound one that day - were ordered off the plane and asked to come back on Monday.

We hear: "The lads were told that cars would take everyone to hotels but none turned up. They had to track down someone from their record company to book a car - which arrived over two hours later.

"Because of the time difference they hadn't even been able to find out where their album had charted. So they rang their manager Louis Walsh and woke him up."

He broke the good news that Westlife were No.1, but by then the lads were so exhausted they just went to bed - without even a celebratory cocktail.

Not exactly the Life and soul of the party, eh lads?

X Factor Stars To Support Westlife - 28 November 2006

X Factor stars Eton Road are set to team up with Westlife.

The Liverpool band heard the news after they were booted off the show.

Despite their initial disappointment Louis Walsh promised them a recording contract and support slot with the boy band.

Eton Road said: "We only found out today so we're all really shocked but we cannot wait."

The band have lost out on the chance to release a Christmas record in the wake of their defeat but they admitted that they do not feel bitter about the outcome.

They said: "We knew it was going to happen so it wasn't a big shock to us."

The band also have a photo shoot with fashion magazine ID lined up.

Westlife Tops Healthy Albums Chart - 27 November 2006

Music Week report (Shortened and only includes the parts about Westlife)

Albums

Christmas finally arrived last week, with the latest in the blockbusting Now That’s What I Call Music series and albums from Westlife, Oasis, The Beatles and U2 principal players in giving sales a massive 38.7% boost week-on-week to 4,476,165, writes Alan Jones.

Easily the year’s highest sales tally, it is also 4.1% up on the same week in 2005, when 4,299,237 albums were sold. Artist album sales last week improved by 35.5% to 3,492,666, while multi artist compilations leapt forward by 51.6% to 983,499.

The biggest contribution to the latter and overall total came from Now! 65, which started slowly but eventually sold 235,804 copies; that’s well down on the stellar 284,254 start made by Now! 62 in the same week last year but well up on the 197,098 start made by Now! 59 exactly two years ago. Now! 65 sold more than four times as many copies as the number two compilation, Pop Party 4, which dips 1-2 even as its sales increase by 25.6% to 54,322, the highest of its five week career.

The battle for artist album chart honours was the fiercest of the year. The four combatants - Westlife, Oasis, The Beatles and U2 - have previously scored 35 number one albums between them. The Beatles contributed 15 of them, followed by U2 (nine), Oasis (six) and Westlife (five).

After a closely contested battle, it was the band with the fewest number ones - Westlife - who emerged triumphant, selling 219,662 copies of The Love Album to debut at the summit. Their eighth album and sixth number one, it provided the year’s third highest tally for an artist album (behind The Arctic Monkeys and The Killers‘ latest albums) and their own second best opening week’s sales, trailing only Coast To Coast, which opened in 2001 with sales of 234,767.

The Love Album’s first week sales are only a little higher than Face To Face, which opened with sales of 216,879 last year.

Of the Irish group’s previous albums, Allow Us To Be Frank, debuted at number three in 2004 with sales of 91,523. while chart-toppers Turnaround sold 154,169 in 2003, Unbreakable sold 187,940 in 2002 and World Of Our Own sold 178,106 in 2000. Westlife’s 1999 self-titled debut opened at number two with 83,053 sales

Although Westlife were ahead all week, they were closely attended throughout by Oasis’ career-spanning Stop The Clocks compilation. Stop The Clocks actually outsold The Love Album on Saturday, when it was purchased by 38,904 buyers compared to The Love Album’s 35,333.

Singles:

Elsewhere in the Top 10, dipping sales mean lower positions for Justim Timberlake’s My Love (down 2-4 on sales of 21,718), Westlife’s The Rose (3-5, 16,686), Beyonce’s Irreplaceable (5-6, 16,472), Fedde Le Grand’s Put Your Hands Up For Detroit (6-7, 13,928) and All Saints’ Rock Steady (7-8, 11,202). Girls Aloud and The Killers re-enter the Top 10 with Something Kinda Ooooh! And America moving 12-9 and 14-10 on sales of 10,583 and 10,571, respectively.

Gallagher Shocked By Westlife Beating - 27 November 2006

OASIS rocker NOEL GALLAGHER was stunned to be beaten by Irish pop stars WESTLIFE to the number one spot in the UK album charts yesterday (26NOV06).

Last month (OCT06), Gallagher's brother and bandmate LIAM voiced his confidence their greatest hits disc STOP THE CLOCKS would rule the charts.

However, the boy band's latest release THE LOVE ALBUM went straight in at number one, leaving Oasis at two.

During his performance last night (26NOV06) at London's Union Chapel, angry Gallagher ranted, "Did someone say Westlife
? That goes to prove there is no God." After realising he had voiced a blasphemic opinion in a Christian church, Gallagher added, "You may strike me down if you wish, but it's true."

Bring On The Love! - 27 November 2006

Westlife Score A UK #1 With New 'Love Album'.

Irish sensation Westlife has stormed home this week on the UK charts, stealing away the coveted #1 UK album spot from stiff competitors U2, The Beatles and Oasis with their album 'Stop The Clocks'. The super achievement tops their already awesome result this month with their debut single 'The Rose' taking out the #1 UK single. It's an outcome even Sir Elton John has expressed his pleasure in...

It was Guinness all 'round for Irish sensation Westlife yesterday when news came in that they're latest album 'The Love Album' had pipped Oasis, U2 and The Beatles for the coveted UK #1 album spot.

Already making a UK #1 with the album's debut single 'The Rose' (and chalking up another mark in the Guiness Book Of Records for their 14th consecutive #1 single) the group has also stormed home ahead of stiff competition in the Aussie charts, with 'The Love Album' debuting here at #11.

The huge achievement of 'The Love Album' has delighted many including pop icon Elton John, who, after a recent testy exchange with infamous lad Noel Gallagher, has expressed his delight at the Irish band's trumping Oasis's 'Stop The Clocks', which debuted at #2.

"I'm so glad Westlife are ahead of Oasis," a miffed Elton candidly told the London Sun on anorak.com. He even went as far as to say the Gallagher brother was a look-alike to "Parker from the Thunderbirds"...

Staying clear of the fray, Shane, Kian, Nicky and Mark are sure to see love continue to flow, with the 11 romantic tunes - from the Righteous Brothers' 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' to a fine duet 'All Out Of Love' with Australia's Delta Goodrem - making the it THE bumper album for Christmas.

Westlife See Off Oasis In Chart Race - 27 November 2006

Westlife have pulled off a big shock by beating rock legends Oasis, The Beatles and U2 to the top spot in the album chart.

The Irish boy band sold 219,000 copies of 'The Love Album', which features cheesy covers of Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' and 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' by The Righteous Brothers.

Meanwhile, Oasis were 6,000 copies behind with 'Stop the Clocks' - a collection of the best songs of their career.

The 'Love' album of Beatles remixes finished third in the chart race, while U2's new singles collection 'U218' finished fourth.

Westlife's Nicky Byrne said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be number one. It means so much to us. We have the best fans in the world and we want to thank them for all their continued support."

The band's manager Louis Walsh said: "It just shows there is true, genuine demand for Westlife when they can beat such amazing legends as the Beatles, U2 and Oasis.

"Westlife are up there with the best. This is their eighth album and proves there is still a long way to go for them.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of the boys. They have got the best and most dedicated fans in the world."

Almost one million albums were sold by the top five artists this week making it the biggest week of sales in 2006 so far.

But Westlife's first week sales were dwarfed by Arctic Monkeys, who shifted 350,000 copies of their debut album last February.

Westlife Celebrating Their No.1 Album In Australia - 27 November 2006

The ’Loife were celebrating their astonishing success on tour in Australia last night.

And to show there were no hard feelings I extended my congratulations — albeit through gritted teeth.

NICKY BYRNE told me: “We are thrilled. We have the best fans in the world and we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”

Even their manager LOUIS WALSH had a little gloat: “It just shows there is a true, genuine demand for Westlife when they can beat legends such as The Beatles, U2 and Oasis.”

NOEL GALLAGHER didn’t let the disappointment get to him. Last night he performed a sold-out acoustic gig in North London in aid of Mencap.

Any other week Oasis would have taken the top slot with sales of 213,000 albums.

But almost a million CDs were sold by the top five artists alone, making it the biggest-selling week this year.

The next closest was in February when the ARCTIC MONKEYS shifted a record-breaking 350,000 copies of their debut album.

This is a part from The Sun paper’s article… Once again Victoria Newton wasn’t too polite so I don’t post the rest of it, if you want to read it click here

This is from 23 November but I found it now, it’s about the Belfast third date

By Zoe Watson

CHART-toppers Westlife last night added a third date to the Ulster leg of their Love Tour.

The band announced their April 15 gig at the Odyssey Arena after two original dates on April 13 and 14 sold out in just over an hour.

Fans queued outside the venue for more than a week for tickets to the concerts which went on sale last Saturday.

Westlife have performed 38 sell-out shows at the Odyssey Arena.

Tickets for the extra date go on sale at 9am on Saturday and are priced at £32.50.

The band will be performing tracks from their latest offering The Love Album as well as all their No1 hits.

Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily have now performed 384 shows since 2001.

Westlife win battle of bands with "Love Album" - 26 November 2006

LONDON (Reuters) - Irish boy band Westlife were the surprise winners of a high-profile battle to top the album charts on Sunday, beating Oasis, the Beatles and U2 to the top spot.

Westlife's collection of covers, "The Love Album", outsold greatest hits albums from Oasis and U2 as well as the similarly named "Love", a medley of remixed Beatles songs, the Official UK Charts Company said.

The four albums were all released this week in anticipation of strong sales ahead of Christmas, with many industry observers expecting Oasis's "Stop The Clocks" to top the pile.

In the end Oasis had to be content with second place, ahead of the Beatles at number three and "U218 Singles" from U2 at number four.

In the singles chart, reformed boy band Take That climbed three places to score their first number one for a decade with "Patience".

The group -- which launched the career of Robbie Williams -- sold 25 million records worldwide before breaking up in 1996.

Ex-Spice Girl Emma Bunton was the week's biggest climber, soaring 21 places to number three with a cover of the Petula Clark hit "Downtown" -- the official single for the BBC's Children In Need fundraiser.

Westlife Beat Oasis, U2 And The Beatles In UK Album Battle - 26 November 2006

Take That are also Number One in the singles chart

Westlife have beaten off Oasis, U2 and The Beatles to win the battle for Number One in the album chart tonight (November 26).

The boy band's new studio covers 'Love Album' beat off all three 'Best Of' collections released on November 20 on what was declared "Super Monday".

Oasis were in at Number 2 with 'Stop The Clocks' closely followed by The Beatles' classic re-workings 'Love' album at 3 and U2's '18 singles' LP at four.

Elsewhere Foo Fighters went in at Number 35 with their acoustic live album 'Skin & Bones'.

Fellow boy band 'Take That' knocked Akon off the top spot in the singles chart with their comeback single 'Patience' after jumping up three places from last week's new entry, which was based on downloads alone.

They knocked the rapper's single 'Smack That', which also features Eminem, into second spot.

Emma Bunton was the highest climber in the Top 10 with her single 'Downtown' jumping 21 places to Number 3.

Nelly Furtado was the highest new entry overall with 'All Good Things (Come To An End)' at 13.

Elsewhere, Red Hot Chili Peppers are in at 16 with 'Snow (Hey Oh)' while Faithless went in at Number 26 with new single 'Bombs'.

Take That And Westlife Claim UK Chart Top Spots - 26 November 2006

Westlife have won the chart battle of the bands to take the number one album spot this week, with their The Love Album. Completely mystyfing critics, the Irish boy band beat best of albums from some of the best bands in the world, U2 and Oasis, to claim the top spot. The Beatles Love album was also fended off, managing to get a number three position. Oasis's incredible Stop The Clocks album charted in second place at number two, followed by the Beatles at three, while U2 entered the chart at number four with their U218 Singles Greatest Hits album.

However, U2 and Oasis are expected to sell more copies overall over the long-term, but with young girls dashing out to the shops to buy the Westlife album, they've ensured the number one. Meanwhile Westlife's single, The Rose, fell two places to number five.

Another boy band, Take That, claimed the top spot in the UK singles chart with new single Patience, crowning their comeback with their first number one single in over ten years. Their first chart topper was Pray back in 1993 and with seven other number one's since then, Patience is the boys' ninth number one single.

After a sell out tour, the reunited Take That boys climbed the chart from number four last week, which was based on downloads only. Now, with the single released on all formats, it's made it to number one and Take That can party again. The Take That boys release their new album, Beautiful World this week.

Meanwhile Emma Bunton's official Children In Need charity single, Downtown, rose to number three and Akon featuring Eminem slipped to number two with his Smack That single. Justin Timberlake's new single, My Love, featuring T.I. climbed to number four and Nelly Furtado secured the highest new entry with her new single, co-written by Coldplay's Chris Martin, All Good Things (Come To An End) which entered the chart at number 13.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers also had a new entry at 16 with their new single, Snow (Hey Oh) while Lemar entered the chart at 21 with his Someone Should Tell You single. From Westlife with ‘Love’ (Shane Interview) - 26 November 2006

After Face to Face, recent Manila visitor Westlife has come up with The Love Album, calculated to surpass the sales of any of the group’s previous albums (put together, they have sold more than 35 million worldwide).

Released by SonyBMG, The Love Album carries the following selections: Bette Midler’s The Rose; Lionel Richie’s Easy; Celine Dion’s Because You Love Me; Lonestar’s Amazed; Bryan Adam’s I’m Ready; Maxwell’s Whenever, Wherever, Whatever; Total Eclipse of the Heart; All Out of Love; Light Up My Life; You Are So Beautiful (To Me); Have You Ever Been In Love; Love Can Build a Bridge; The Dance; All Or Nothing; and You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.

How’s The Love Album different from other Westlife albums and those of the same genre by other artists?

Here’s Westlife’s Shane Filan in a 15-minute exclusive phone interview, talking about love and what the album is all about.

The Westlife was in Manila for a concert last September. How was the experience?

"I enjoyed Manila an awful lot this time. I don’t know but it was just different this time. It was really, really good. The reception was very warm, especially at the hotel (Crowne Plaza) where we stayed. I think the concert was excellent. It was the most enjoyable concert we’ve ever done in the Philippines. The fans were just fantastic!"

Aren’t you coming back maybe to promote The Love Album?

"Not this year. No, there’s no plan to go back there this year. But we’re planning to go back next year to promote The Greatest Hits album we’re working on next summer. It’s coming out next year. We’re planning to go to a lot of countries, including the Philippines. In 2008, we’re embarking on our Greatest Hits World Tour and it will also include the Philippines."

You worked on The Love Album in-between your world concert tour this year. How did you manage to find time for that?

"Well, it was a summer concert which meant that we did it three days during the week but not during the weekend. That’s when we worked on the album. It was tough, hard to do, but we just had to do it."

Do you think The Love Album will outsell your past albums?

"I think it’s gonna be a successful album. I don’t know how successful it will be but we are expecting it to be a big album. All the predictions so far are very promising. But then, you’ll never know."

Why did you choose to use "Love" in the album’s title instead of, maybe, "Romance"?

"Because it’s exactly what the album is all about – Love. It’s the perfect word for the album which covers so many styles of love songs. I just think it’s a neatly-packaged love album."

Were the songs on the album the personal choices of the Westlife guys?

"Yeah. We actually chose from a long list of love songs. Those that made it are our personal choices."

The Love Album is touted to be different from all other love compilations we see on TV. How different is it?

(At this point, Shane begged off for a while, "Just a second." After about five minutes, Shane was back on the line, saying, "Sorry, my baby is crying!" So the interview veered toward his being a father.)

Oh, your baby is crying! How many kids do you have?

"Just one. He’s 16 months old. We’re in our house in London; it’s 10:55 a.m. here, Tuesday (Nov. 14, 6:55 p.m., same day, Manila time). We have just one kid at the moment, hopefully more in the future."

Do you help change his diapers and prepare his feeding bottles?

"Oh yes, I do. He’s crying because he lost one of his shoes and I have to help him find it."

Is your wife also in showbiz?

"No, she’s not. She’s from my hometown. Her name is Gillian. We met about 10 years ago."

Anyway, a while ago (before that welcome interruption), I was asking you how different is The Love Album from other love compilations...

"I think it’s in the choice of songs. It’s got a good mixture in there. It’s not your karaoke kind of album. Some of the songs are famous, some are not; but they are all beautiful love songs."

Interpreted the Westlife way?

"You know, we didn’t try to do the songs too differently from the originals; we didn’t try to change the songs too much because they are famous songs and you’ve got to be careful when singing those songs. I think we just sang them the way us Westlife guys feel it. It’s the Westlife’s tribute to the (singers of the) original songs."

The Westlife guys are self-confessed romantics. How romantic are you?

"Very romantic. Ask my wife."

What’s your most romantic moment?

"My wedding day three years ago. It was like Christmastime. It was a big event."

If you were to court your wife all over again with a song, what would it be?

"Amazed by Lonestar."

And what’s your all-time favorite song?

"Also Amazed by Lonestar. I think lyrically, it’s a perfect love song. I wanted to sing it on The Love Album but I got voted out by other people, so maybe I can do it for our next album. Ha, ha, ha!"

What’s your favorite line from that song?

"Every line in it. It describes what in a man’s eyes is the perfect woman. Everything about that woman is perfect – her hair, her eyes, her smell, everything about her! In my eyes, my wife is the perfect woman, that’s why I can relate to that song."

Speaking for the Westlife, what song do you think does the group want to be remembered for?

"You Raise Me Up."

Westlife Confound The Bookies (And The Critics) To Grab Top Spot - 26 November 2006

By John McGurk

Oh boy! Westlife are set to be crowned kings of the charts - thanks to the loyalty of their Ulster fans!

The group have astonished music industry experts with the sales for their new cover versions CD, The Love Album.

Westlife - back in Belfast at the Odyssey Arena next April - are beating rock legends The Beatles, Oasis and U2 in the race for the UK No.1 album spot tonight.

Bookies had made Oasis the hot favourites for the top spot at odds of 12/1 ON!

Last Monday saw a flurry of new greatest hits compilation packages released by The Beatles (Love), U2 (U218 Singles), Oasis (Stop The Clocks) and The Corrs (Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs' Collection).

But by the middle of the week Westlife's new set of songs, including their version had sold more than 102,000 copies - 14,000 more than nearest rivals Oasis.

HMV Donegall Arcade manager Iain Joannides told Sunday Life: "Westlife are the best seller in Northern Ireland by a long way. If you look at their sales in Belfast alone, they are not far off double those of Oasis and a third more than The Beatles.

"Northern Ireland is a bit of a stronghold for them."

Iain attributed the relatively low sales for both the U2 and The Corrs to the fact both bands have previously released greatest hits collections.

Other big album-selling artists in Ulster last week included Razorlight, Girls Aloud, The Kooks, George Michael, Sugababes, Snow Patrol, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.

Chart Track Commentary On The Irish Charts - 25 November 2006

Westlife have now released one album a year for eight years: six of the eight have debuted at No1, one made it to No1 after 4 weeks at No2 (‘Unbreakable’) and one peaked at No2 (‘Allow Us To be Frank’).

This year’s album, however, is not only the fastest-selling of their career, but is also the fastest-selling album in Ireland since U2’s ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ 2 years ago.

In the face of the Westlife juggernaut, U2 have to settle for a No2 debut for their singles compilation ‘U218’ (their first album of recent years not to debut at No1) and The Beatles make do with a No3 debut for ‘Love’ (their previous compilation ‘1’ spent 10 weeks at No1 in 2000/2001). Oasis enter the chart at No5 with their first greatest hits set ‘Stop The Clocks’, marginally handicapped by a later official release (Monday) compared to chart competitors (Friday).

Dublin 98FM’s ‘The Toll Trolls’ come in at No7 with their second comedy collection and finally Garth Brooks completes the pack of new entries in the Top 10 with his box set ‘The Limited Series’ at No9.

Westlife Interview On ITV.com - 24 November 2006

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Outlasting all the others, Westlife have been together 8 years now. The Irish charmers are back with a new album of love songs.

WATCH THE BOYS LIVE HERE
High  Low

So what inspired you to do an album of covers of love songs?

Shane: We planned originally to do an original album like last year. But to be honest, the songs weren't there this year. We had a lot of songs. We had about 40 songs coming in from different but only about three of them were up to the standard. And we weren't going to make a bad album. It was actually Simon Cowell who suggested doing a love album, a tribute to love songs.

Kian: The Love Album is a cheesy idea but when you look at the actual songs that we've picked for this album. They are not your typical love album songs. We kind of felt that we went for the ones that you wouldn't automatically pick for this album. What we did, we went for the non, not obvious.

Now Brian's girlfriend, Delta Goodrem is dueting with you on the new album, have you discussed bringing him back to the group?

Nicky: It would be very hard to bring Brian back now. It was a big shock at the time. It was nearly two and a half years ago since he's gone. Even though It's still weird to look at footage of us with Brian there, it would be even more weird to have him with us again and do everything with him again.

Do you think there will ever come a point when you will have had enough of Westlife, pack it all in and relax at home?

Mark: I don't think any of us would ever want to sit down and do absolutely nothing in our lives. At the moment Westlife is still going strong so we still have the opportunity to be able to continue with it and everything.

Have you considered making an album with a completely different sound, maybe a rock one?

Shane: What we have realised over the years is that 8 albums in eight years, and that's alots of albums to come out with. We've realised what our fans want from us. They love us singing ballads and singing love songs. That's what we enjoy singing the most. For us we know that our best albums are love songs and that's why we are still here I suppose.

What do you think about the return of the boybands?

Kian: Most of the bands that are getting back together were all together when we were about three years in the market. And now it probably makes a bit of sense why we didn't break up.

Shane: A lot of them bands were really successful when they split up, like Take That was very successful still when they split. Five, we couldn't believe they broke up. Blue, because they wanted to do solo things. I think that's a lot of reasons why bands break up. We respect each other an awful lot in a band. We are always going to be better as a four-piece.

Nicky: A lot of the Take That boys have come to see the shows over the years. Gary Barlow and Mark Owen. They came to Manchester to see us. Maybe, maybe they were looking at us saying well those lads are still doing it and selling records why can't we come back and form and do something again.

Now you stole the boyband crown from Take That, who do you think would win in a fight?

Kian: If we were to take on Take That?

Nicky: Yeah it would be a good scrap.

Mark: Have you seen the size of Gary Barlow?

Kian: I reckon we'd ‘take that!'

Nicky: I think we are a bit fitter. I'd take Howard.

Shane: I say that Gary would give you a good slap.

Mark: Gary would put you down hard.

Nicky: In the ring, on the pads.

Mark: It'll never happen, so not to worry.

Westlife’s Rose Continues To Flower At The Summit - 24 November 2006

singles and albums

John Dingwall

WE'VE never been a nation to embrace rap or R'n'B so it is no surprise that Westlife have held off the might of Akon and Eminem.

The Irish lads' ballad The Rose stayed at the top of the Scottish charts for a second week with Akon ft Eminem's Smack That (currently No.1 in the UK-wide chart) only managing the highest new entry at No.2.

Robbie Williams did better in Scotland than the whole of the UK with his Lovelight tune going to No.4 here, eight overall. Third highest entry went to Justin Timberlake ft Ti's My Love with Christina Aguilera's ballad Hurt just behind at No.8. The only other new entry in the Scottish top 20 is at No.15 - a disappointing placing for Snow Patrol and Martha Wainwright and their song Set The Fire To The Third Bar. But UK-wide it only made it to No.18.

1 (1) Westlife The Rose

2 (-) Akon ft Eminem Smack That

3 (2) U2 & Green Day The Saints Are Coming

4 (-) Robbie Williams Lovelight

Wild West - 23 November 2006

By Kim Dawson

THEY’VE gained a reputation as squeaky-clean types, but those Westlife boys know how to live life dangerously.

Mark Feehily proves the point by chatting on his mobile while driving to Dublin airport to pick up his boyfriend.

“If I cut off I’m sorry, but I’m on the look-out for the police, as I’m driving.” He tells me. Naughty, naughty!

Tired

To make matters worse, Mark, 26, and his bandmates – Nicky Byrne, 28, Shane Filan, 26 and Kian Egan, 26 – are actually playing truant.

Tired of promoting new release The Love Album, they have told their manager, X Factor’s Louis Walsh, 54, they will be off home for a few days. Mark explains: “It’s been hectic, so we all said we wanted to go back to Dublin and things would have to be rescheduled.”

Despite taking a break, the boys look set to beat Oasis to the No.1 album spot on Sunday. And as proper “Oirishmen”, Westlife would challenge the Gallaghers in the bars as well as the charts.

Mark is a veteran of boozy all-night sessions. He admits that a recent bender left him with such a vicious hung-over, he ignored the buzz of his phone.

Mark recalls: “I didn’t want to speak to anyone as I’d been drinking so much the night before.”

It took 10 tries before Nicky could get him to answer – and break the news that he’s expecting a baby with wife, Georgina, 28, daughter of Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern, 55.

Mark came out last year and is dating Kevin McDaid, 22, of defunct boyband V. But he’s fed up with people asking if that means he’ll be coping Madonna, 48, and adopting a child.

Mark sighs: “I can’t see it happening in the distant future. Madonna looks like she’s taken a kid into a safe, solid family environment. With her as young mother, you wouldn’t be having arguments about going out!”

Bath

Once the album fight with Oasis comes to a halt this Sunday, Mark is hoping for more time off. More boozing?

“I want to see Casino Royal. I used to watch James Bond films after my bath every Saturday night as a kid. They seem to have got the casting on the ball with Daniel Graig. I couldn’t say I fancy him, though, as I’ve never met him. Kevin’s more my type.”

And with that, Mark’s foot is on the pedal and it’s back to the showbiz loife.

Louis: Westlife Are The Best - 23 November 2006

By LOUIS WALSH

A BATTLE is raging in the album charts between pop heavyweights The Beatles, Oasis and U2. But four Irish lads are putting the legends to shame with an album of rehashed covers. Cheesy, bland, boring, predictable – all words used to describe Westlife in the past. And yesterday The Sun’s Bizarre column launched a campaign to stop them getting to No1 with The Love Album. But here their manager, X Factor judge Louis Walsh, explains why he thinks Westlife are the world’s greatest band.

"WESTLIFE truly are the people’s band — they appeal to ordinary people, people like you and me. The sort of people who pick up this paper every day. That is the key to their success.

It’s people on the street up and down the country who buy their records — not the trendy London types who are too snobby to think they are any good.

Look at the numbers and they speak for themselves. People go out and buy Westlife records in the shops in their thousands. They’re not the type of fans who will download them.

And the lads themselves are solid gold. Mark, Nicky, Shane and Kian keep their feet firmly on the ground — they don’t try to be anything they are not.

They know they are just four guys from Ireland who got lucky and, at the end of the day, they are nice people who don’t forget their roots.

Four normal lads in an extraordinary situation who are close, tight, good friends. I think that comes across with people.

As a band, they are not in competition with anyone — there’s no one else out there who compares.

Take That are similar in terms of being a successful boy band but it’s a different kind of music.

In terms of other boybands, they have seen them all come and go. Westlife have sold 32million records and they’re going to go on for ever. It’s all down to hard work.

They put records out back to back and they just don’t stop. It means their fans keep coming back for more.

They’ve had 14 No1 singles — and will try to get 20.

They never get good airplay, they cannot get played on Radio 1 for love nor money . . . but it doesn’t matter. They’ve proved you don’t need Radio 1.

Westlife aren’t hip but I think that’s why many people like them. Like the band, their fans don’t pretend to be something they are not either.

Westlife have a huge fanbase. They’ve sold 150,000 tickets for their tour.

I love Oasis — I’ve bought the new album — and I love The Beatles.

Westlife are No1 in Ireland this week — they’ve beaten U2 there, which has never happened. This is going to be their biggest-selling album in Ireland.

They are set to do eight nights at The Point in Dublin next year — no one else can do that.

As for the tunes, I pick them all — including the “cheesy” ones.

I pick them because I love them and it seems a whole load of people out there love them too.”

We’ll Never Take Brian Back - 23 November 2006

Exclusive Veteran boy band Westlife refuse to consider a return for McFadden after his solo career hits the skids

By John Dingwall

WESTLIFE have ruled out any chance of any future reconciliation with former bandmate Brian McFadden, despite the fact they have recorded and performed a track with his girlfriend.

The Irish lads are on course to bag their sixth No.1 long player on Sunday, with The Love Album outselling competition from Oasis and U2.

In stark contrast, dad-of-two McFadden's solo career has faltered since he quit the million-selling group in 2004.

At the time, he claimed he wanted to spend more time with his family, but his marriage to Kerry Katona crumbled, and McFadden fell into the arms of Aussie singer Delta Goodrem, who sang with the lads on Saturday night's X Factor.

Nicky Byrne says McFadden has no chance of ever being allowed back into Britain's most successful boy band, regardless of how badly his solo career is going.

He said: "I still keep in touch with Brian, and he is keeping well, under the circumstances.

"At the time when Brian left, deep down in my heart, even though I didn't say it publicly, I couldn't understand it

"When Brian told us he wanted to leave and be a family man and look after his children, I agreed with the sentiment but, knowing Brian, I couldn't really believe he wanted to give music up and not sing again.

"In fairness, he did go home for a while but, all of a sudden, his new album was out. And that's when I started to worry if it was pre-planned.

"So, no, I can't see Brian getting back in the band. We are a different band now and we've moved on. It's a difficult situation.

"He has never said he wanted to come back but, if we were asked, we would say, 'absolutely not'.

"Maybe at the time of the split, we might have considered having the five of us back but, the longer we go on, the more of a band we are without Brian.

"It's not like the Take That situation. They split after Robbie Williams left. We've already done three tours and three albums without Brian.

"If we go on like this, in time, people won't remember Brian was in the band.

"Even a reunion in years to come is most unlikely."

Nicky also revealed he used to fight constantly with his former bandmate, accusing him of being unprofessional and failing to turn up on time for engagements.

He said: "I've had a few conversations with Brian about him leaving, and I'm probably better mates with him now because, at the time, it was all about being on time and being professional and getting the job done. I felt he was coming up short, and me and Brian would have a go at each other at times.

"Now I realise Brian was having problems in his marriage, which was something we didn't have the slightest clue about. And he just needed to be at home to try to sort that out. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for him, for whatever reason.

"The Press were on his side when he left, and they wrote Westlife off. The general feeling was that Brian had done a Robbie, and was going to be the next big thing.

"It was important to us, as a band, not to get the doubters get to us."

Nicky, 26, has advised McFadden he should "disappear" until he can get himself some decent songs. He believes it's his old bandmate's only chance of making a comeback.

"Unfortunately for Brian, it was too much too soon," Nicky explained.

"He left us, his marriage broke up and it was too much. He suffered because of that. He's a decent bloke, a quiet bloke. And I've said to him he needs to be quiet, not make any comments, bury his head in the sand and make a really great album.

"If he can't write a great one himself, he should record some and make a comeback."

On Sunday, Westlife's The Love Album is set to top the charts, outselling new collections by Oasis, U2, The Beatles and George Michael.

Westlife's latest album has sold 102,600 copies since Monday, compared to to just 88,700 for Oasis's Stop The Clocks.

The compilations by The Beatles, U2 and George Michael have sold 69,600, 35,700 and 28,600 respectively.

Nicky beamed: "We have had eight albums in eight years, and we are still at the top of our game."

To promote the record, the group turned up on X Factor at the weekend, performing an unlikely duet with McFadden's girlfriend Goodrem.

But the band say the show, run by their long-time mentors Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh, is unlikely to provide them with any competition.

Nicky said: "I've seen the odd show.

"Leona has a great voice but, all in all, X Factor doesn't have the talent like last year when, from day one, Shayne Ward stood out as the star.

"He was good looking. He was a great singer and a good dancer. He had everything. In terms of the X Factor, he had that. I don't think this year has anyone like that."

Nicky believes their label boss Cowell and manager Walsh have the golden touch when it comes to masterminding Westlife's career.

"I don't think we'd be here and as successful as we are without Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell," Nicky confessed.

"Individually, they are both an encyclopedia of music and that includes all different genres.

"What has happened with Westlife is that we can't compare ourselves to any other band. There's been no rock band, vocal band or pop band that has lasted in the charts as long as we have, who have had albums back to back.

"If you look at other bands in the UK, some might be happy to sell 400,000 albums.

"But, if we were selling that amount of records, we'd probably knock it on the head.

"We're just delighted to be having this level of success because, if the sales dropped, we wouldn't do it.

"I'm not being arrogant. I'm just telling you the harsh reality of our situation, and we couldn't have done it without them.

"We are just looking at facts. What our secret is that we have that other people don't, well, I can't put my finger on it."

Elton Calls Me To Back Westlife - 23 November 2006

SIR ELTON JOHN has stormed into the WESTLIFE v OASIS chart debate, branding NOEL GALLAGHER “a tosser.”

Elt rang me yesterday to back Westlife in their battle for top spot in the album chart on Sunday.

The pop king was in a fury after Noel berated him for being too precious to go out for a pint of milk.

He raged: “I’m so glad Westlife are ahead of Oasis. After what f****** Noel Gallagher said about me I couldn’t give a s*** about Oasis. I go into f****** shops all the time myself, he’s just such a tosser. He’s an absolute tosser and he looks like Parker from Thunderbirds. They don’t deserve to be No1. It’s not a greatest hits album because they’ve left three of their biggest hits off it.”

I think Sunday, November 26, is shaping up to be the darkest day in chart history.

British music is in serious danger of having the ’Loife sucked right out of it in a travesty of music justice.

Yesterday I revealed the shopping trolley brigade marching through supermarket checkouts across the country are sweeping Irish warblers Westlife to the top of the charts — ahead of rock ’n’ roll legends Oasis.

I called for Bizarre readers to Stop The C*cks and buy the Oasis best-of with the more polite title. But sales figures to date show the Manc rockers are being mown down in a middle-of-the-road music onslaught.

The battle is being won in supermarkets where housewives are picking up albums with their loo roll.

The advantage at the close of play yesterday between KIAN EGAN, MARK FEEHILY, NICKY BYRNE and SHANE FILAN and their Manc rivals stood at 14,000 copies.

Westlife have topped 100,000 and Oasis are not far off, leaving the mighty BEATLES and U2 third and fourth.

Even a huge Saturday sale from loyal Oasis fans will struggle to help them make up the lost ground.

Last night X Factor judge SIMON COWELL, who signed Westlife, added his tuppence worth. He said: “Westlife are smart — they know and respect their audience. It doesn’t matter that some of their songs are covers. I’d rather have a cover version of a good song than a crap song. This week is good for the industry because both bands are selling a ton of albums — it doesn’t matter who is No1.”

You emailed, texted and posted comments in your thousands about my campaign. And it seems I’ve hit a nerve on both sides of the bitter musical divide.

MB from Stoke said: “Just to say thanks for supporting Oasis in your newspaper. It’s so important to keep real music alive. People will one day realise that Oasis are the best band in the world and are always churning out great album after great album.”

But Alan Perry disagreed: “If I saw Liam p***ed in the street I would p*** on him. Long Live Westlife.”

With Elton coming out fighting for Westlife, Noel now needs the big guns to back him. I reckon it’s a job for the Modfather — PAUL WELLER

Walsh Tells Oasis: Give In - 23 November 2006

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

AS Westlife galloped ahead in the album chart yesterday, their manager Louis Walsh told Oasis: "Time to wave the white flag."

The midweek chart showed the Irish lads' Love Album had sold 102,697 this week - Oasis's hits album Stop The Clocks has only shifted 88,730.

Louis told 3am: "We're also beating the Beatles and U2, and with Take That on top of the singles chart it's clear that boy bands is where it's at."

Westlife are signed to Louis' fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell's label. And Simon said yesterday: "Westlife release good songs and people just know what they are getting.

"Maybe Oasis should come on the X Factor next week and then they'd have a chance of being number one." Now that we'd pay to see.

Oasis And Beatles Struggling In Race For Number One - 22 November 2006

Westlife take a lead in the UK album chart

Oasis's 'Best Of' collection 'Stop The Clocks' is being beaten by Westlife's 'The Love Album' in the battle for the Number One position on the album chart.

The so called 'Super Monday' (November 20) included big albums released from The Beatles, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters and U2, but according to HMV's Gennaro Castaldo the race is being won by Westlife.

"At the moment Westlife are 14,000 sales ahead of Oasis. It's between those two at the moment," he told NME.COM.

"People don't rush out to buy 'Best Of's, which Oasis, The Beatles (whose 'LOVE' LP is actually a 'mash up' of their best-known songs) and U2 all have out at the moment. Westlife are benefiting from having a studio album out which people feel they have to get hold of on the week of release."

"Westlife are likely to be Number One on Sunday (November 26) in the album chart, which is quite a coup for them."

Westlife Play Two Shows In One Day At Butlins! - 22 November 2006

Westlife proved they will do anything to not let their fans down last weekend as they played show after show in Butlin’s Minehead resort.

Following extreme weather, an erected structure built to house gigs for 5,000 Westlife fans was damaged so badly that it was unfit for the planned gigs.

However, such a setback failed to daunt Westlife, who rather then playing one huge concert instead played two in one day at a smaller venue in the Somerset resort.

It was the first time the band of Irish crooners had ever played back to back shows and Butlins staff are now full of praise for the band.

Now that’s what you call dedication!

Westlife Look Set To Win The Battle Of Super Monday - 22 November 2006

Midweek figures say the boys will beat The Beatles and Oasis to the top slot

Paul MacInnes
Guardian Unlimited

Whoever said that 'Super Monday' and everything it entailed was all about Oasis vs the Beatles doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. In fact, they probably deserve to be sacked. Forget that, executed.

For the truth, the complete unvarnished honest truth, is that Westlife will win the weeklong battle of Super Monday, and everyone who's ever had even the remotest connection to the music biz has known that all along. Including Victoria Newton.

"Lennon, McCartney, Gallagher, Bono, The Edge. Some of the greatest names to ever hail from these fair isles", she writes this morning using a) the term 'fair isles' as loosely as she possibly can and b) the name The Edge as an example of a great name, when it's not even a real one.

Anyway, this is a digression as there are important matters at hand: Vicky wants to derail the Westlife juggernaut.

"The battle for superiority in the Supergroups Showdown [nice name, nice name], the biggest head-to-head of musical greats in chart history looks like it's going to be won by Westlife.

"While early official midweek chart figures show Oasis just leading the pack, the news is grim for people who like their music with guitars, drums, bass and musical talent. [The figures] do NOT take into account the massive amount of Tesco sales, which will weigh heavily in Westlife's favour. Experts predict that with housewife supermarket purchasing [an officially recognised industry term], Oasis will be pushed aside and de 'Loife will breeze into the No1 spot by an easy 5,000 sales".

The column then descends into a plea to buy the Oasis album. Obviously readers should be left to make up their own minds as to what to buy.

Not Fair! Go Westlife! - 22 November 2006

Hiya everyone! There is an article today in The Sun newspaper which I’m not even going to post on here… As we know, Westlife’s The Love Album goes really well in the midweek sales in the albums chart and could be No.1 on Sunday.

The Sun has an article which is actually asking everyone to buy the other bands’ albums so that Westlife won’t be No.1 on Sunday… It’s a “Not Westlife At No.1” campaign… I think this is not fair at all and what they do it so immature!

You can read the article HERE. Join and leave your view. They can’t treat Westlife that way!

Also, if they have this campaign against Westlife, they should know there are many people that love and support Westlife. So go out there and buy the album and you could also buy it as present for Christmas for the ones you love.

GOOD LUCK WESTLIFE!! I hope this boycotting won’t affect the album.

The Boys Become Dads - 22 November 2006

And more love fills Westlife's music in its new album

By Stefanie Conceicao

FATHERHOOD is the new buzzword for Irish boy band Westlife.

Shane Filan, 27, became a dad last year. His wife Gillian Walsh gave birth to daughter Nicole in July.

Brian McFadden, 26, who left the band in 2004 and is married to ex-Atomic Kitten member Kerry Katona, was already father to two children, Molly, 5, and Lilly Sue, 3.

Now, it's Nicky Byrne's turn.

Byrne, 28, recently announced that he and wife Georgina Ahern, daughter of Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, are expecting a child next summer.

The soon-to-be dad admitted that he wasn't really prepared for fatherhood.

'I will worry,' was his reply when The New Paper asked what he would be like as a father in a phone interview.

NO NAME YET

Byrne remained tight-lipped, however, about details of his impending child. When asked whether he had thought of a name yet, he skilfully avoided the subject.

'I think we won't release personal information like that yet. We don't even know if it is a boy or a girl.'

But that hasn't stopped bookmakers from placing bets on names. According to the Irish Daily Mirror, Boylesports has already started offering odds on the name of the child.

Nicky appears to be the favourite choice, if the baby is a boy, while Cecelia and Mary are joint favourites, should it be a girl.

Bookmakers will have plenty of chances to spin bets as Bryne admitted he wouldn't mind having up to five kids.

'But now, maybe just one,' he said, with a chuckle.

With more lovable bundles of joy on the way, it probably seemed apt that Westlife, which also includes members Mark Feehily, and Kian Egan, both 26, have titled their latest and eighth album The Love Album. It's out in stores here.

Consisting of covers of classic love songs, it includes a duet, Air Supply's 1980 hit All Out Of Love, with Australian singer Delta Goodrem.

Pop fans will also recognise another track, All Or Nothing, which was originally written for Westlife but was recorded by American boy band O-Town. The song went to Top 5 in the US charts in 2001.

The first single from The Love Album, The Rose, originally recorded by Bette Midler, has already hit No 1 on the UK charts.

In the group's record label's press release, Feehily explained: 'We wanted songs that were more than just a big hit and could translate well into being a Westlife song.'

But with the members hitting their late 20s and having bigger responsibilities like raising families on their minds, isn't still being labelled a boy band rather passe?

Byrne said: 'It'd be great to be referred to as a vocal group, a pop group, but when it comes to music, if they want to call us a boy band, then that's fine.'

Kian Interview In Hot Stars Magazine - 21 November 2006

In honour of Westlife's new disc, The Love Album we caught up with Kian Egan, 26, to talk matters of the heart. Kian has been with his girlfriend, former Hollyoaks actress Jodi Albert, 23, for six years now and we want to know everything from the moment he knew she was The one to when they are getting wed.

How did you know when you were first in love with Jodi…?
I knew four or five weeks of being with her. It's about not really having a care in the world and just being content and happy. Jodi is the love of my life.

When did you first tell her you loved her?
I was the first one to say it. We'd been together about 6 weeks and we were holidaying in Barbados and messing around in the sea when I decided to say it. I had a nice reply.

How often do you tell her you love her?
About 20 or 30 times a day. And she’s the same, unless we've had an argument... (laughs)

How many times have you been in love?
I don’t think I’ve ever been in love before Jodi. In the past I think it was the idea of love, not true love

Have you told a girl you loved her to get her into bed?
No, (laughs) if I’ve ever told a girl I loved her, I would have thought that I meant it at the time. You should never say it unless you mean it…

Do you believe in love or money?
I'd give all my money away for love. What’s the point of having money if you don't have anyone to share it with? You don’t need money to have a happy life...

What was the last present you bought for Jodi?
A rather expensive diamond watch and necklace for our anniversary. She loves diamonds-just like any other girl.

What possession do you love the most?
I’m not into material things. But if something happened to our dog, Prince, I’d loose my life. He's our little boy.

Have you talked about having babies yet?
All the time. I come form a family of seven kids so anything less than four or five wouldn’t seem right. We both know its a few years away yet, we're still young and we feel that we would loose our social life.

When are you getting married?
Probably in the next few year's. I don’t want to marry Jodi and then we don’t see each other for months because I’m on the road or she’s away filming. But when we do marry I want a three month honeymoon.

Oasis VS Westlife - 21 November 2006

Oasis are heading the race to claim the UK Number One album this Sunday, according to early sales reports.

The Gallagher brothers look set to compete with Westlife for the chart-topping LP, despite going head-to-head with U2 and The Beatles.

Apparently "Stop The Clocks" and "The Love Album" are outselling their rivals, having shifted over 50,000 each on the first day of release.

The Fab Four's "Love", which is a sound collage of their biggest hits produced by George Martin, is currently in third, one spot ahead of the new U2 best of "U218".

Meanwhile, Noel and Liam Gallagher have dismissed "Love" as "rubbish" and "a pointless exercise", the day after all four albums were released.

Liam insisted: "If you haven't got The Beatles by now you're not going to get it. I'm all Beatled-up!"

Robert Allen From Xfactor About Westlife - 21 November 2006

Part of a Robert Allen interview

You’ve worked with a few musical legends on the show - what’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received from them?
"The most valuable advice is stay grounded, be focused and stay true to yourself and your dreams are always possible. When I met with Westlife – they’re ordinary guys just like me – and to actually take five minutes out of their time to hear me sing and let me know that ‘I had a dream just like you had a dream’… if you stay grounded and focused it’s in your grasp and it will happen to you."

Westlife Likely To Beat Both U2 And Oasis To Album Chart Top Spot - 21 November 2006

Westlife look likely to romp the top of the album chart come Sunday with their The Love Album collection, according to industry insider predictions.

DiS has heard on the proverbial grapevine that the Irish boyband’s latest is looking certain to outsell newly released best-ofs from U2 and Oasis – 18 and Stop The Clocks respectively – as well as the new Beatles album, Love. It was previously assumed that this week’s number one position would be contested between the Manchester outfit and the Bono-led rock –four-piece.

Sales data from one leading supermarket is yet to be collected, meaning that things could change, but considering Westlife’s popularity with daytime-shopping mothers (a shocking generalization? Nah…), it’s unlikely that either Oasis or U2, or the Beatles, will beat them to the number one position before Sunday’s chart confirmation.

Of course, anything can change. But it probably won’t.

Monday Midweek’s – The Love Album At No.2 - 21 November 2006

Midweeks – Monday’s Albums Sales
01. Oasis
02. Westlife (Just 1.300 copies behind Oasis! Come on lads!! You can do it!)
03. The Beatles
04. George Michael
05. U2

Oasis and Westlife lead albums chart battle

The much-anticipated battle in this week’s album chart will be an unlikely two-horse race between Oasis and Westlife, according to early retail reports.

Oasis’s Stop The Clocks (Big Brother) is currently beating all comers, but with only 1300 sales separating it and Westlife’s The Love Album (S), the eventual victor is unlikely to become clear until the weekend. Both albums sold in excess of 50,000 copies on release yesterday.

The Beatles are poised to debut at three with Love (Apple), while U2’s U218 (Mercury) has a battle on its hands with George Michael’s 25 (Aegean/Sony) for the number four spot.
In a Christmas market saturated with greatest hits packages, Westlife’s Love Album and Razorlight’s self-titled effort could be the only albums in the Top Ten containing new recordings this week.

Away from the Top Ten, new albums from Foo Fighters (RCA), Fron Male Voice Choir (UCJ), Tom Waits (Anti) and Akon (Universal) will chart.

In the singles market, Take That are in contention for their first number one in a decade with Patience (Polydor), while Emma Bunton’s Children In Need single Downtown (19) the probable number two. Singles from The Feeling (Island), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Warner Bros), Lemar (RCA/White Rabbit) and Pink (LaFace) are likely high risers after getting released physically yesterday, while Nelly Furtado (Geffen), Booty Luv (Ministry Of Sound) and Jet (Atlantic) are set to enter the chart.

50.000 copies in one day! That’s great! I hope Westlife can pass Oasis until Sunday! Everyone get you copy of The Love Album and buy it as present for your friends as Christmas is coming! Good Luck Westlife!! It looks really good yaa!

Beatles Leading Oasis, U2 and Westlife - 20 November 2006

HMV UK

HMV reports that early morning and lunchtime sales at its 230 stores around the country and online at hmv.co.uk show that The Beatles 'Love' album is just outselling the greatest hits release from Oasis, 'Stop The Clocks' - there are only200 sales between them, ahead of U2's '18 Songs' and Westlife's 'Love Album’.

Today is the biggest release day of the year - dubbed 'Super Monday' by HMV - and the new albums from Oasis, U2, The Beatles and Westlife are expected to sell well over a million copies between them during the next few weeks as they battle it out to be the best-selling album of the Christmas period.

Take That, whose great new single 'Patience' is also in the shops today and likely to rise to No.1 in the singles charts this week as an early contender for the Christmas No.1, will throw their hat into the ring next week (27 Nov) with the release of their comeback album, 'Beautiful World'. HMV's Gennaro Castaldo comments: “Based on initial sales, it looks like first day honours may just go to The Beatles, which comes as no surprise given the nature of their fanbase, but it may be that Oasis will sell more over the week to go to No.1, while U2 and Westlife will aim to shift more copies over the Christmas period as a whole. Watch out for Take That, though, who might trump them all with their comeback album next week, to make it a 'Take That Christmas'."

Chart-Toppers In To Save The Day After Venue Is Blown Down - 20 November 2006

WESTLIFE have saved the weekend for 5,000 fans - after an arena they were due to play at collapsed in high winds.

The chart-toppers were booked last year to play a special show today at Butlin's in Minehead, Somerset.

But on Wednesday night the specially erected venue was torn down, throwing the band's live show in jeopardy.

Thousands of fans had already booked to see the lads - who are at No1 with their hit song The Rose from their new Love Album.

So instead of disappointing people who had booked for the weekend months in advance, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Kian Egan will perform TWO shows in the afternoon before Flying Without Wings to make it to the X Factor live show tonight.

An insider said: "The lads had been booked as a star attraction for Minehead - the deal was sold as a full weekend to 5,000 fans who were flocking to see the lads.

"But disaster struck on Wednesday night as the arena blew down in high winds.

"But the lads kindly stepped in to save the day by doing the shows in a smaller venue so their fans wouldn't be disappointed.

"Today is going to be really busy for the boys - the first show is at 1pm, the second is at 2.30pm and then they'll all clamber on to a helicopter and fly to London to perform live on the X Factor."

A Butlins spokeswoman confirmed Westlife had gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure the gig went ahead.

She explained: "We have been doing these special Arena Breaks for some years now and the venue gets put up every November.

"We have never had a problem before but the weather conditions on Wednesday were so severe that unfortunately part of the structure blew down.

"Westlife were initially supposed to play one big show on Saturday night.

"But now they have kindly volunteered to do two afternoon shows in our smaller, permanent venue so that no one goes home disappointed.

"They will be doing the two shows back to back then flying off for the X Factor.

"It is fantastic that they have done this for their fans and for us particularly because, as they are at No1 in the charts, there is an even greater demand on their time than usual at the minute.

"We think they are wonderful for doing this and we want to say a big thank you to them."

Battle Of Bands With Big Album Releases - 20 November 2006

It's the battle of the bands today as some of the biggest names in pop - Oasis, U2, Westlife and The Beatles - all release albums.

'Stop the Clocks' from Oasis, '18 Singles' from U2, 'Love' from The Beatles and 'The Love Album' from Westlife will vie for the top spot today.

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said: "Christmas starts here as far as music retailers are concerned as it's not everyday that some of the world's biggest ever super groups have albums out".

He added that it's going to be close to see who comes out on top, but HMV reckon Oasis' 'Stop The Clocks' will go to number one by the end of the week, though U2 may look to sell more copies of the 18 Singles over the next month, or so.

As relaxed alone a London Apartment during a day off from his Westlife duty, Nicky answered this call and heard Georgina screaming with joy.

The News they’d anticipated had been confirmed; his wife was expecting their first child. Reliving the moment during an excusive interview with SWM, Nicky’s face is ablaze with happiness.

‘It’s a cliché, but all the number one hits with Westlife are nothing compared to this,’ he says ‘the baby was planned and I knew Georgina going for the test she phoned me, I was hoping the news would be positive’

After Georgina call, Nicky was on the next fight to Dublin- ‘like a light’- and within in a couple hours were breaking the news to there respective families.

‘We told Georgina’s mum first, then my mam and dad, and then we told Georgina’s dad. All within two hours of each other’ reveals Nicky

Sometime next June- Nicky is coy about the exact date- they will make Taoiseach’s Bertie Ahern a granddad.

So how did Bertie React?
‘He had a laugh about it (being a granddad)’ Nicky says, ‘He smiled from ear to ear you could see he was proud. It’s the First grandchild in both families and that has created more excitement’

Devoted couple Nicky and Georgina have been living a charmed life-one that just seems to get better and better. They are school sweethearts who’ve been together since 16. And through Nicky’s success with Westlife they enjoy a life style that is the stuff of dreams.

‘We are together 12 years and we’ve had a lot of fun. Through Westlife we’ve seen the world together and now this is the icing on the cake” Nicky says ‘it’s the next step in our lives together, We always said that when we feel ready the time will be right, we didn’t want to have children during the early days of Westlife. We saw the heartache Brian had because he was so young and he had the pressure of constant touring, We knew we weren’t ready at that stage. But when Shane and Gillian had their little daughter Nicole, last year we began to get broody and we felt the time was right for us as well. There is no sign of Westlife success slowing down and we’ve just signed a brand new contract for the next four or five years, so they’re no pointing in waiting. Of course I realise that we are blessed because not everyone can have kids and my heart goes out to people who can’t. Life works in mysterious ways; we are lucky enough for Georgina to be pregnant’

Nicky will have a couple of months off around the time his child is due. ‘Being due in early summer, makes it great for us’ he says. ‘We finish our tour the first week of may, so it gives us a couple months, to take it all on board and start changing nappies. We haven’t designated a baby room in our house yet, so we are going to have got somebody in to turn it around. One thing I’ve learnt from Shane and Gillian is just how much stuff goes with a baby! I think we’re going to have to get a separate tour bus for Shane and myself and our families. That will be the baby tour bus. Kian usually travels with Jodi and his little per dog, and Mark obviously has Kevin. We’re a proper Adams Family on the road now.’

Since the couple announced their good news to the public, Nicky has been getting a mixed reaction.
‘The guy down in my local in Malahide said ‘you’ve done a lot of things in your life, but your blessed with your own child is very special’ that was touching. Then I got the lads going “Ah it’s a 25 year life sentence. Your life isn’t yours anymore!’

Nicky and Georgina have no Preference for the sex of their child. ‘Whatever comes along we’ll take it’ He laughs. ‘That what everybody says and it only hits you once you’re in the position. Once they are healthy it doesn’t bother me. But the bookies are already offering odds on the names. I have pals asking me what I will call him or her. They want to make a few bob on it.
Although she fainted while out shopping recently and has bouts of nausea, Georgina is in good form.’

‘Pregnant women’s blood pressure drops sometimes dramatically and that caused her to faint’ He explains ‘But compared to the experience of some of her friends, she’s pretty good. She’s just delighted. Every morning there’s a smile from ear to ear on both our faces. We can’t believe how lucky we are with cards that have been dealt.’

This Is The Life - 19 November 2006

They’ve just notched up their 14th UK No.1, sold over 35million albums worldwide, and have both Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh on their team. Bigger than ever before, we spoke to Shane, Nicky, Kian and Mark about ‘having the best job in the world’. Oh, and playing in cow sheds!

On the new Love Album, you’ve picked your favourite songs – who picked what and which songs are your personal favourites?
Nicky: We sat down with Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh and worked out what songs would work best. The Rose was Louis’ idea, and Total Eclipse Of The Heart was Simon’s idea. Easy was our idea, and so was You Light Up My Life. We also recorded Hard To Say I’m Sorry by Chicago but unfortunately that didn’t make the album.
Shane: You Are So Beautiful was Kian’s idea.
Nicky: We had a hand in about six of them, but the type of person Simon is, people can see it from X Factor, he’s in control and likes to make the final decision. If we had a problem with his choices and we really wanted to we could say no, but he’s made such good choices in the past we trust him.
Shane: You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling is one of his favourite ever songs.

Simon and Louis are now huge on X Factor – after all these years how does it feel to have your record company boss and your manager being big stars in their own right?
Shane: It is weird to be honest but things are still the same between us, they’re exactly the same as they were when we first met them. Simon’s always been the way he is and he’s always been right most of the time. He’s picked 14 number one singles for us.
Nicky: Louis and Simon together are a great team, they know so much, they’re like an encyclopaedia of all pop music. Louis’ house back in Ireland is just completely full of CDs, it’s ridiculous. They’ve got a great ear for original songs too and have picked some great ones for us in the past but over the past couple of years there hasn’t been that many quality pop songs at our level and that’s why we decided to make The Love Album.

You’ve played Wembley Arena 21 times and are as big now as you’ve ever been – are you comfortable in your ‘job’ now?
Kian: Yeah, we know who we are, we’re comfortable in our jobs and our life, it’s nice. We know we’ve got the best job in the world, but we also know it’s just a job, which helps to make it all the more enjoyable.
Shane: It’s good, we look forward to making an album in the summer, doing a tour in the autumn and the spring, and then looking to see what album to do the summer after that. We’ve had that excitement for eight years and hopefully we can have that for another eight, but you can’t look too far ahead. We’re lucky that we can look a year or maybe two ahead, lots of people in this industry can’t. Westlife’s become our life but at the same time some of us are married with children now so you can’t do two months straight work away somewhere. You need to go home for a few days, or take a couple of days to go surfing and relax, chill out and keep things sane and keep things working.

If you woke up tomorrow and you weren’t successful what would you do next?
Kian: I don’t think we’d make the decision to break up. After eight years Westlife has become such a part of who we are and we’ve done so well that we’d be hesitant about making that decision. It’s hard to imagine it too. We’re going to do the greatest hits next year and so we know that things will probably be good for another while yet. But we have other things outside the band that we do now so it’s not like if we broke up then we could do all these other things that we don’t get the chance to normally. We have other passions that we enjoy, Shane’s got a baby, Nicky’s married. If the band stopped we’d probably get stuck into our other hobbies and passions for about six months, get bored, then phone each other up and go, “Let’s do another album lads!”
Shane: Haha! It’d take six months, a year max, until we were bored out of our heads.

You’ve toured around the world and are going back to Australia in the New Year – where’s the strangest place you’ve ever played?
Nicky: It was in a cow shed! It was for a TV show and sponsored by Pepsi Max and called Stars Without The Sugar, meaning having the normal things stripped away. Whoever won it could choose where to have us play and the girl who won it lived on a proper farm down in Bristol or Cornwall somewhere. We did five or six songs in the barn and she got 100 of her friends and family in there. There was hay everywhere and we used the big tall milk canisters as our stools!
Shane: They had quad bikes that they used for rounding up the sheep and we had a go on them earlier in the day. There was one sheep that we thought we’d killed! We went roaring up and they all legged it apart from one who jumped into a ditch and didn’t move!
Kian: And a cow nearly crapped on Nicky!
Nicky: The lads had never milked a cow before so I got in there and started giving it a bit of a go. Just as I did its tail went up and I knew what was going to happen and I ran! Poop went everywhere!

And the best gig you’ve ever played?
Shane: Playing Landsdowne Road, the rugby stadium in Dublin was really special, going home is always great. We saw Robbie Williams play there before we did and said to each other, “Imagine? Wouldn’t it be amazing to play here?” and a year later we did two nights. Afterwards we were quite emotional as it was such a special night. Even Louis was touched.
Nicky: The morning of the first show I was in bed and I got a voicemail from Kian saying, “You have to come in, there’s a problem with the stage, it doesn’t fit and the weather’s shocking!” I was thinking ‘what!? How can the stage not fit into a stadium?!’ It didn’t because we had these two big turntables on either side, but luckily the engineers were able to move them into the middle. We thought the rain might be dangerous as we had to get on lifts and all sorts but thankfully as soon as the show was about to start at six o’clock the clouds disappeared and it turned into the most perfect blue day. It was a great day in the life of Westlife!

And you’ve become big in Australia recently?
Mark: We have! It’s somewhere we always wanted to do well in and last year we went there with Face To Face and then earlier this year we went on the number one TV show and did You Raise Me Up. The next week the album went to number one for six weeks, which was unreal.
Kian: We’re thinking about doing a live greatest hits DVD from Sydney, which would be amazing.

Simon Cowell Worries Leona Can't Win - 18 November 2006

by Daniel Kilkelly

Simon Cowell has admitted that he is worried about whether Leona Lewis can win The X Factor.

The show's judge, who described Leona's performance last week as "world class", has started to doubt whether the public will vote for a female winner for the first time.

"There's still something that bothers me because historically girls don’t win these competitions," Cowell explained. "I’ve seen this happen before. When you vote for someone like Leona it’s like you’ve had a hand in her career. You’ve helped launch somebody who may do very well. Just as easily you can snuff it out."

However, despite Simon's doubts, Leona was praised by special guests Westlife when she met the singers this week.

"We've done a duet with Mariah Carey in the past but I think if Leona was singing Mariah’s part she’d fit in well," Shane Filan admitted. "She could be up there with Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, any of them."

The X Factor airs at 6.50pm and 8.50pm tonight on ITV1.

Pudsey Pundraisers Raise £381,443 - 18 November 2006

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The BBC's annual Children in Need appeal has raised more than £380,000 in Northern Ireland and more than £18m across the UK.

As phone lines closed at 0215 GMT, nationally the appeal total stood at £18,300,392 and locally at £381,443.

And as usual, an array of wacky stunts and events from water skiing on chilly Lough Erne to shearing sheep took place to help the BBC charity. Last year in Northern Ireland, almost £2.5m was given out through 301 grants.

TV cameras were out and about in Omagh, Warrenpoint, Belleek, Armagh and Derry as well as the main event in Belfast. Local presenters included John Daly, Donna Traynor and Christine Bleakley.

The show featured musical performances from some of the biggest names in pop including Westlife and Katie Melua.

And a host of stars doubled up with famous singing faces to duet in the BBC's Blackstaff studios in Belfast - including ex-Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton and NI football manager Lawrie Sanchez.

Since 1980, more than £10m has been raised on the night by generous donations and fundraisers in Northern Ireland.

Louis: Macs Can Beat The Axe - 18 November 2006

Westlife Mentioned

SCOTLAND'S X Factor hopefuls try to dodge a bullet tonight for the fifth week in a row.

Yet again, Ayrshire's MacDonald Brothers are favourites to be eliminated from the TV talent show. But so far they have never even finished in the bottom two.

This week Scouse swing singer Ray is equal favourite for the boot.

Bookmakers Coral said: "Punters have realised that the MacDonald Brothers have nine lives and with their record for survival, it doesn't look good for Ray."

Judge Louis Walsh told brothers Craig and Brian to follow Westlife's example. He said: "They've never been cool but they've had 14 No1s."

Rival Simon Cowell hit back: "The MacDonalds are not winning me over. It's getting beyond a joke right now. The more I criticise them the more people vote for them."

Irish Bands Race For Top Chart Slot - 17 November 2006

By Maureen Coleman

The race for this week's UK number one looks set to be a battle of the Irish bands as three acts scrap it out for the coveted top spot.

Boyband Westlife is hoping to hang onto its position in the top slot with the single The Rose, which saw the boys enter the Guinness Book of Records last week after their 14th single debuted at number one.

Snapping at their heels are fellow Dubliners U2, who are currently number two with their Green Day collaboration The Saints Are Coming.

But Northern Irish indie band Snow Patrol are catching up with both groups with their new single Set The Fire To The Third Bar.

The track, a duet with Martha Wainwright, was released earlier this week and was today the 14th biggest selling single in HMV stores across Northern Ireland. The single is the third to be taken from their chart-topping album Eyes Open.

Iain Joannides, manager of HMV Donegall Arcade, said: "There is bitter battle this week for number one with chart toppers U2, Westlife and Snow Patrol vying for the coveted position.

Snow Patrol's single 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' has received excellent reviews and, while it is defending its corner, both Westlife and U2 are tough acts to beat."

U2 and Westlife have both notched up number one singles during their careers but Snow Patrol are yet to reach the top of the charts.

Their second single from Eyes Open, the anthemic Chasing Cars, gave the band its biggest hit to date, at number six. The song entered the charts in the lower end of the top 40 but steadily climbed to number six over a number of weeks.

The band are set to play a triumphant homecoming gig at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on December 21, capping off a successful year which saw them crack the American market and go straight to number one with their fourth album.

Ulster Is Backing Pudsey's Party To Raise Millions - 17 November 2006

By Maureen Coleman

Thousands of people across Northern Ireland are set to party with Pudsey today as this year's BBC Children In Need event gets under way.

The marathon appeal was due to kick off this morning and run right through the day, with a variety of weird and wacky fund-raising activities planned throughout the province.

Presenting the main television programme from the BBC's Blackstaff studios in Belfast live on BBC 1 from 7pm will be John Daly, alongside Donna Traynor and Christine Bleakley.

Television cameras will be out and about with outside broadcasts from the Hotel Carlton in Belleek, Ocean Nightclub, Warrenpoint, the Everglades in Londonderry, the Charlemont Arms Hotel, Armagh, and at Omagh College.

A host of stars will be doubling up with well-known singers to duet in the Blackstaff studios in Belfast in a bid to win viewer votes and the chance to perform again live at the end of the evening.

There'll be musical performances from some of the biggest names in pop, including Katie Melua and Westlife.

Lisburn woman Sharon McKibben will be keeping her fingers crossed to see if she strikes it lucky on Friday evening by winning the UK-wide BT Speaking Clock competition, with money from the phone entries going to the annual fund-raiser.

Sharon (35), a finance manager from Hillsborough, has made it through to the final 15 in a nationwide competition to become the new permanent voice of the BT Speaking Clock, which this year celebrates its 70th birthday. She was one of 18,400 from across the UK to take part in the special competition.

Presenter John Daly said: "I can hardly believe a year has passed since our last Children In Need show and what a difference a year makes to the lives of countless numbers of young people across Northern Ireland, thanks to the kind donations from last year's appeal.

"We hope this year is going to be even bigger and better than before, as we all spring into action.

"So whether you like a bit of bungee jumping or bean baths are more your thing, come on and get involved."

Fans: This Is The Life - 17 November 2006

By Zoe Watson

FIVE teenage girls have spent the last week camping out for front row seats to Westlife's next Northern Ireland tour.

The fans have given up their home comforts for damp tents and cold tea in the hope of getting the best seats for the April concerts, when tickets go on sale tomorrow.

Roisin Arnold, 16, and 17-yearold pal Ruth Hutchinson arrived outside the Odyssey Arena box office in Belfast last Saturday night.

Ruth said: "We came early because we wanted to get to the front of the queue, we wanted the best tickets. We do this every year because it's the only way to be in the first row and see Westlife up close.”

Friends Chantelle Pennington, 15, Emma Fearon, 19, and 14-yearold Ruth Gourley joined the queue on Wednesday.

Chantelle said: "We didn't think there would be anyone in front of us but Roisin and Ruth got in first. I think we'll still be guaranteed front-row seats.

"Some people think we're mad for sleeping out here in the freezing cold and don't realise what big fans we are."

Minhead Butlins – Important Info - 16 November 2006

Due to extreme weather conditions in Minehead, the arena tent which was to be used to house the concert by Westlife on Saturday 18th November, has been damaged beyond use.

However, Butlins have worked with Westlife to assure guests that the concert will still be going ahead but due to the structural damage to the arena tent, the concert will now take place as two separate concerts in the Resort’s popular and intimate venue Centre Stage.

The concerts will now be held at the earlier times of 1pm and the second at 2.30pm, with each performance lasting approximately 45 minutes. All tickets will be issued to guests on arrival.

Butlins are praising Westlife’s support and dedication to their fans, after the band agreed to this, their first ever back-to-back gig, at a time when the band are in such high demand.

Due to the altered concert times and length, Butlins are offering all guests a £25 retail voucher, per person, to spend on Resort.

Butlins believe guests will still have a great weekend and thoroughly enjoy the live concert, however for any guests who feel disappointed with the changed times and venue and choose to cancel their break beforehand, a full refund will be offered.

We will be keeping this page up to date with the latest information.

Wind Blamed For Big Top Collapse - 16 November 2006

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive has begun at Butlin's in Minehead, Somerset, after high winds caused a big top to collapse.

The complex is due to host pop star boy bands McFly and Westlife at the weekend, with 4,500 fans expected.

Butlin's management said the concerts would go ahead, but inside a smaller part of the complex.

Westlife would now perform two shorter sets, the group said, so that ticket holders would not be disappointed.

Ok To Be Gay - 16 November 2006

Most of the most successful boy bands – be they still in existence or long gone like N’Sync, Boyzone and Westlife – have many things in common. They sing pop-R&B flavoured chart hits, display impeccable well choreographed dance moves and each member is blessed with dreamy good looks.

But the latest thing some boy bands have in common is that at least one member has declared himself gay and proud of it. I’m referring to Stephen Gately from Boyzone, Lance Bass from N’Sync and Westlife’s Mark Feehily. 26-year-old Feehily confirmed rumours slightly over a year ago that he is gay, and happily in love with another boy band member, Kevin McDaid from the now disbanded pop group V.

When Westlife was recently in Singapore for a one-night concert, I asked Feehily if life for him has been better or worse ever since he bravely came out to the world….

Feehily: For better by far, you know? By a thousand million miles! It’s just like a massive weight off my shoulders now that it’s just out there. Now everyone knows and I can live my relationship (freely) and can go for dinner, go to the cinema, go to clubs, whatever and not having to worry that somebody might find out. I don’t think that’s a very natural way of living out a relationship. A lot of people live their lives like that but for me personally, nothing’s more important me being just able to live my life and enjoy myself. I haven’t gotten any negative remarks thrown directly at me. I don’t know what people say behind closed doors or to each other but I certainly haven’t gotten any negative remarks. If they don’t like it, then they can lump it because I don’t really care! I think I’m a nice person and it’s their problem if they have a problem with it, you know?

The 4-member boy band will soon be releasing their latest and 7th studio album. It’s titled The Love Album which should be out in November. Feehily told me more about it ..

Feehily: Each song that we’ve chosen has to sort of fit into the ‘Westlife style’. Also one thing we had to do was to be careful that we didn’t go down the karaoke route and pick loads of songs that are really karaoke-like. But that’s great, karaoke’s fine or whatever but we wanted to find songs that have a bit more to them than just the same songs that you hear in every pub or every bar in the world being sung by people.

The Love Album Review - 16 November 2006

Westlife – 'The Love Album' (RCA) Released 20/11/06

3.5/5 stars

By: Sean Heslin

Ah, dear sweet Westlife, how hard they try. How bleak their outlook and how fanatical their fans. How trained are their performances and how exasperated their producers. How ravaged by time they will become when age starts to set in a little more. But for now we seem to have this album on our hands, which we probably should enjoy.

Well. Is it any good? Are Westlife, those groomed babe magnets that they are, up to snuff? Much to everyone’s chagrin, yes they apparently are. The album is nearly mostly good, though if you are not female or enjoy this kind of output anyway, then you may wish to find a cliff to throw it off after the second listening or so. Aside from this slight problem, the first listening is reasonable, they do have the kind of talent that only comes after a great deal of practise, which is indeed nice and harmonised. The album itself is basically cover versions of classic love songs, though their watered down version of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ is still better. Westlife's version of ‘You Are So Beautiful (To Me)’ it has to be said is actually quite good, much to this reviewers eternal shame.

Making a guest appearance is also one Delta Goodrem who ably aids the gentlemen in a rendition of the song ‘All Out of Love’ which has done the rounds of the radio and will probably get bought by many slushy films if it has not already.
What else should be pointed out about this album? Well, it will most likely go down rather well if you buy it for your mother at Christmas, and if you have a younger sister of a certain type, she will have saved up for it already. Westlife seems to have that effect. Blast them..

"Nakedness!"

It's difficult to believe but in the year and a half this site has existed, Westlife have never before spoken to us. We must be coming up in the world. Either that or... let's not finish that sentence.

No, the real reason the lads agreed to chat to us on video is that they're about to release 'The Love Album', featuring some all-time classic slushy tunes, and they know there's nothing we at Channel 4 love more than love. It's brilliant, what with all the kissing and touching and rubber clothing.

But what do Westlife think love is... Let's find out...

Westlife To Star On X Factor: Walsh - 15 November 2006

Louis Walsh has revealed that chart-toppers Westlife will appear on the X Factor as guest judges this weekend and Take That might also star in a later show.

The Irishman, who manages the group, also criticised the previous guest judges for all having been "old men".

"This week we might be having someone very young, someone hip and someone I know very well as guest... Westlife," he revealed.

"I think we need to introduce a few younger people. There's also talk of Take That coming up, Gloria Estefan and Barry Manilow and people," he added.

Louis, 54, said many of the contestants are too young to know who some of the previous guest judges were.

"A lot of people didn't know who Rod Stewart was, I couldn't believe it," he admitted

"We've had no guest judge under 60, which is a bit odd. We've had Tony Bennett, who's 80, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, Julio Iglesias - I mean they're all elderly men."

Irish boyband Westlife are currently number one with their cover of Bette Midler's The Rose.

Their album The Love Album is out next week and they are due to tour the UK from March 2007.

Hurry Up, You Too! - 14 November 2006

Kian & Jodi In OK! Magazine – Issue: 547 – November 21 2006

Are Jodi and Kian inspired by mate’s nuptials?

How long have we been waiting for Westlife heart-throb Kian Egan to get hitched to his other half, Jodi Albert? For years, that’s how long! So fingers crossed their appearance at their pals Jason Gorman and Ciara Mulliagan’s wedding the other day has filled them with inspiration.

Sadly, we’re not sure seeing the couple unite in marriage will be enough to make them get spliced any day soon as both Kian and Jodi have told us that marriage isn’t on the cards just yet!

“Jodi and I will get married when the time is right for us. The worst thing I can imagine is to get married and then a month later head off on tour. So when we do get married it will be when I have about a year off.”

Lovely Jodi added: “We are very much in love but we don’t want to rush.” What’s certain, when they do marry, is that it’s going to be a gorgeous day. “We both want to get married and have a fabulous fairy-tale wedding,” Jodi told us. “I will be pulling all the stops out. No expense will be spared, which is why I want to be in the position to do it well.”

Once they exchanges vows, then the pair promise to start thinking about children: “I want to be a young mum, but that can be anytime up until the age of 30. I’d want to make sure that I’d be old enough to be a good mum. I don’t want a kid as an accessory.”

Well, we can’t wait for the day they finally do get hitched. We’ll be flying without wings!

Kian: “I’m Glad I’m Not Kerry’s Ex” - 14 November 2006

Westlife’s Kian Egan, 26, says his wild days are over. Now he would rather be riding a wave than nursing a hangover

Westlife’s Kian is not stupid. When the group’s new release The Love Album hits the shops this week, he knows it’s going to cause a stir in celebville.
The record features a duet with Delta Goodrem girlfriend of former band mate Brian McFadden.

‘I realise it’s quite controversial, but before Brian left the band or started going out with her, we had plans to record with her. I just feel really sorry for Delta as she’s been dragged into it all.’

Of course by that Kian is referring to the long running saga between Brian and his ex wife Kerry Katona who is rarely out the papers due to her loud mouth. Hard partying and turbulent relationships.

‘There’s a lot of laundry being washed in public. Personally it’s not my style.’ Kian says ‘whatever goes on between Brian and Kerry is their business. But really, she needs to calm it down. I read things she’s said and I think to myself “I don’t know this girl,” I think she’s gone too far in some respects. It’s been years since they split, but she’s still going on about it. I’m just glad it’s not me.’

Since recording with Delta, Kian has only nice words to say about the Aussie songstress. ‘She’s just gorgeous and so lovely. She and Brian make such a great couple. They are genuinely in love. Brian’s had a rough time in the press leaving Westlife didn’t go down too well, then there was the Kerry thing, but he’s got his life together now.’

From the sounds of it, Kian’s life had also taken a turn. Despite having a world tour lined up next year and new releases to promote, the Irish singer says he’s not up for any big celebrations. ‘I’m 26… I’m getting old’ he jokes. I can’t party until 4am anymore. I’ve really toned down the drinking. I much prefer going to the pub for a few pints than going into a nightclub and getting absolutely smashed. I call it “Old man syndrome”. Although Mark and Shane are still up for it’

For the last year Kian and his girlfriend of three years Jodi Albert (ex hollyoaks actress) have been living together in a fancy pad in London. ‘We walk the dog and chill out. Sometimes we go back to Ireland where we have a place’ he says ‘I took up surfing three years ago and that has changed my life. If I know there’s going to be good waves in the morning then I’m out of bed by 6am and in the water by 6.15am. It’s an amazing getaway- although photographers do catch me sometimes. But they never get me taking a 6ft wave- just looking stupid.’
While Kian fills his spare time riding waves, it’s a wonder he ever gets to be with Jodi 23, ‘We’re used to not seeing each other for a while. But when you find the right person, it works.’

However, he stresses there’s no sign of wedding bells any time soon. ‘I know we’re together for life, so it will happen. I’ve never doubted that for a seconded.
We’ve been together over three years and most people who are together for that long don’t run off and get married. Besides Jodi is only 23 – who gets married at 23 nowadays? The day will come and it won’t be a secret;’

The Love Album Review - 14 November 2006

Westlife – The Love Album - SonyBMG

Irish group Westlife is back with their eighth album, which features remakes of some of the most romantic love songs. Their first single ``The Rose’’ is a remake of a Bette Midler original and just recently went to No. 1 on the British music charts.

Westlife churns out their versions of Bonnie Tyler’s ``Total Eclipse of the Heart,’’ Debbie Boone’s ``You Light Up My Life’’ and Joe Cocker’s ``You Are So Beautiful to Me.’’

If you loved the original versions, don’t worry. Westlife’s remakes are quite similar to the originals, and they do offer a fresh version of ``All Out of Love,’’ a duet with Delta Goodrem.

How Georgie Gave A Faint Idea About The Baby - 13 November 2006

Westlife star Nicky Byrne...found out he was going to be a dad when his pregnant
wife fainted in posh shop Harrods.

The singer’s wife Georgina - Taoiseach Bertie Ahern - is expecting a baby in the first week of June

But Nicky revealed he only learned for sure he was going to be a father when his wife collapsed in the luxury London store.

He said "We have known for a little time. But she surprised me a couple of weeks ago because she fainted in Harrods in London and collapsed into my arms. I was blessed I had a baseball cap on and nobody saw me. It was pretty scary at the time but confirmed it.”

The 28 years old Dubliner said Georgina is in good health apart from a bit of morning sickness.

He said" She’s feeling a bit nauseated but she is doing absolutely brilliant. We're together for 12 years and this is the real icing on the cake for us. It is like all our birthdays coming at once, We are really happy"

Nicky, joked he is hoping that the pregnancy will not stop Georgina, 27, voting for her father.

He said "I would rather it was after the election-so then Georgina could get her vote in. She would hate that.

Nicky said the Taoisoeach was over the moon when he heard he was going to be a granddad.

He added: “He was delighted- it is his first grandchild obviously. And I can’t leave my mam and dad out either - It’s their first grandchild too.”

Westlife Rack Up 14th Number One - 13 November 2006

Westlife have underlined their position as the most successful boy band of recent times after racking up their 14th number one single.

Their version of 1980 Bette Middler ballard The Rose gave the Irish boys their latest hit after knocking Put Your Hands Up For Detroit, by Dutch dance DJ Fedde Le Grand, from the top spot down to number four in the charts.

The luck of the Irish shone through in yesterday's chart results, with veteran band U2 rising four places to number two with The Saints are Coming, their new collaboration with US punk band Green Day.

Rock Steady, the single released to mark the comeback of girl band All Saints five years after they split, climbed from 11 to three in the UK singles chart, while US singer Beyonce slipped one place to five.

Girls Aloud dropped to number seven with Something Kinda Ooooh, followed by rival girl band the Sugababes, who climbed to number eight with their new song, Easy.

Madonna's latest offering, Jump, came in as a new entry at number nine, while American band My Chemical Romance completed the top ten with Welcome to the Black Parade.

Westlife are sure to be celebrating after topping the UK charts for a 14th time, with the band now ranking equal third with Cliff Richard in terms of artists who have clocked up the most number one records.

The Irish lads, who have sold more than 35 million albums during their eight year career, remain behind only the Beatles and Elvis Presley in the stakes for the most number ones.

Westlife's latest chart success gives band member Nicky Bryne something additional to celebrate, following the announcement last week that he and wife Georgina are expecting their first baby next summer.

Bryne married the daughter of Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern in August 2003.

THE RAZZ: Westlife Hit The Target With 14th 'Bullseye' - 13 November 2006

Liz & Beverley Lyons

NEW research from the book of British Hit Singles & Albums has revealed that Westlife have had more "bullseyes" - records entering at No.1- than any other act in chart history.

Their latest single, a cover version of Bette Midler's The Rose, gave the band their 14th No.1 this week. Incredibly, all 14 of their No.1 hit singles have debuted at the top of the chart.

When their debut single Swear it Again hit the No.1 spot in May 1999, the group also managed an unbroken run of seven consecutive No.1s - a record which still stands six years on.

Five of their seven albums were also "bullseyes", with their lowest album chart entry reaching no less than No.3.

British Hit Singles & Albums Editor David Roberts commented: "I must admit that at the end of 2003 I thought their chart-topping days were over.

"How wrong was I? Their amazing achievement is in having a fanbase that has grown-up with them over seven years.

"It's a trick few pop groups have emulated."

Top 10 Acts with most chart "bullseyes"

1. Westlife (14)

2. Oasis (10)

3. Take That (8)

4. Spice Girls (8)

5. Eminem (7)

6. Elvis Presley (6)

7. U2 (6)

8. Boyzone (6)

Westlife Score 14th UK Number One - 12 November 2006

Irish boyband Westlife have topped the UK singles chart for the 14th time in their career with The Rose.

They are joined at the top by fellow Irishmen U2, whose collaboration with punk act Green Day - The Saints Are Coming - rises from six to two.

All Saints climb from 11 to three with their comeback single Rock Steady, and Madonna's Jump enters at number nine.

On the album charts, British funk act Jamiroquai debut at the top with their greatest hits collection, High Times.

Entering at number two is the latest band put together by X-Factor and Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell, Angelis.

The group features six children between the age of 11 and 14 drawn from choirs such as Royal Scottish National Orchestra and New London's Children's Choir.

Last week's number one, The Sound Of Girls Aloud, is pushed down to number three, and Damien Rice enters at number four with 9.

The next four places in the top ten are all new entries, with albums from Katherine Jenkins, McFly, Paul Weller and Sir Cliff Richard all making their first appearance.

Westlife's chart accolade cements their chart reputation as the most successful boyband of the 21st Century.

They have sold more than 35 million albums in the last eight years, and won the coveted Record of the Year prize four times.

However, they have a long way to go before they beat the record for the most number one singles in the UK.

That honour is held by Elvis Presley, who has hit the top spot 21 times.

Westlife knocked Dutch dance DJ Fedde Le Grand's "Put Your Hands Up For Detroit" off the top spot and down to number four, according to chart compiler, The Official UK Charts Company.

Midler had a hit with "The Rose" in 1980.

Since their first hit in 1999, Westlife have sold more than 35 million records around the world, according to their record label.

Fellow Irishmen U2 rose four places to number two with "The Saints Are Coming", recorded with the American band Green Day.

In third place, was "Rock Steady", the comeback single from girl band All Saints, who are back together after splitting up five years ago.

American singer Beyonce slipped one place to fifth with "Irreplaceable" and dance duo Bodyrox fell to sixth with "Yeah Yeah".

Girls Aloud dropped to number seven with "Something Kinda Ooooh", while another all-female band, Sugababes, climbed to number eight with "Easy".

Madonna's new single "Jump" rose 50 places to reach number nine, while American band My Chemical Romance completed the top 10 with "Welcome to the Black Parade".

In the album chart, Jamiroquai's greatest hits collection "High Times: Singles 1992-2006" was a new entry at number one.

On the singles chart, The Rose, from Westlife’s new long player The Love Album, instantly provides the Irish group with its 21st top five hit in a row, debuting in pole position on sales of 44,305. Surprisingly, the song failed to chart here for Bette Midler, when it served as the theme to her film of the same name in 1980, although it reached number three in America for her. Subsequent remakes by several artists, including Michael Ball have also fallen short of the Top 40.

The Rose is Westlife’s 14th number one single, putting them equal with Cliff Richard and behind only Elvis Presley and The Beatles in the all-time league table.

U2’s Saints Are Coming collaboration with Green Day climbs 6-2 on sales of 32,338.

Westlife Sunday Magazine – Q & A - 12 November 2006

FACTFILE

- Signed in 1998 as a five-piece.

-Brian McFadden left to go solo in 2004.

- First band to enter the charts at No1 with their first seven singles.

When Brian McFadden left Westlife, many people predicted the end for the Irish boy band.

But three years later, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne are about to release their eighth album.

When Sunday asked you for you questions for the band, they came from all over the world...

£50 STAR QUESTION

If Brian asked to return, would you let him? - Aline Noronha, Brazil

Shane: "Probably not. We've been without him for three years and we've done an awful lot that we're very proud of. We had a great time with Brian, but we've got so used to him not being in it, it would be weird if he rejoined. I'd never rule out performing with him again, but as for him joining the band again, that won't happen."

Mark: "We could never have replaced him either. We'd have bullied a new person or treated them like an outsider because after eight years we have such a strong bond."

When Brian left, people thought you'd split - but you're bigger than ever. Why? - Gareth Hulance, East London

Shane: "Brian leaving was the kick up the bum we needed. We wanted to be even more successful."

My wife has a Westlife poster opposite our bed and I've caught her looking at it while we're "being intimate". Could you tell her this is inappropriate? - Mr. Jones, Spalding

Kian: "Mrs. Jones, that's inappropriate! Take it down."

Nicky: "Nah, keep the poster up, it's not doing any harm."

Mark: "Take it down and we'll come round and watch instead."

What happens to all the teddy bears and chocolated your fans send you? - Annie, Bedfordshire

Mark: "Every couple of months we'll give them away to kids' hospitals or charity."

Shane: "The really cute ones I'll give to my daughter Nicole as she loves them. We can only eat food or sweets if they're fully wrapped so you know they haven't been tampered with. Most of our fans are normal, but some of them are psycho, so you don't know what they could have done with it!"

Mark, how has life changed now people know you're gay? - Natalie Hewison, Leicester

Mark: "My life has got umpteen times better. My sexuality doesn't define me as a person, but it's a huge part of anyone to be open about it. It's changed my life totally as I feel so much happier and at ease. It's the best thing I've ever done."

Your new album, The Love Album, has already been nicknamed "The Shag Album". Which is the best track to make love to? - Jacqui Mortimer, Hull

Shane: "I'd recommend Easy. It has a saucy backing track to it, and you could imagine lounging on your bed listening to it and getting it on."

Are there any of your songs you don't like singing? - Nikhil Parker, Tokyo

Shane: "Tunnel of Love was the worst song we ever recorded. Lyrics like, 'Yes, I'm ready to go through the tunnel of love' are like macaroni and cheese with dounle extra cheese!"

Kian: "I Have A Dream wasn't very us - it was corny, cheesy and cheap."

Mark: "Uptown Girl doesn't take much singing - it's not very vocally challenging."

Was it right for Kerry Katona to have a go at Brian in public? - Stuart Goodman, Bucks

Shane: "She still has a lot of pain and probably wants to let people know. And Brian might be the same. They're both in a bad situation at the moment."

Nicky: "She's hurting badly but we'll never know the ins and outs of their relationship. We feel bad for both of them."

Mark: "They were two people who were in our lives every single day, they were like family, we can't take sides. We're there to be friends with both of them."

What is the weirdest thing a fan has done to get your attention at a gig? - Lissy Brydon, Plymouth

Shane: "A girl in the fourth row sent up an envelope while we were on stage - she'd taped her pubic hair inside. We made a show of her by putting her face up on the big screen!"

Mark: "People are always pretending to faint to get into the first-aid section by the stage. Once the doctors start looking at them, they leg it up on stage. Now first aid is outside."

What about the future? - Sarael Marvelous, Philippines

Shane: "We have this album to promote, a tour next year, a greatest hits part two in 2007 to celebrate out 10th anniversary, then we'll reassess after that."

After you eventually split up, will you go solo or will you become house husbands and play golf all day? - Victoria Thompson, Northern Ireland

Shane: "That's exactly what we plan to do! Being home all the time with my family would be perfect. I don't think I'd go solo. Westlife is as big as any band could be - doing it on my own would be lonely and rubbish."

Nicky: "Look at the Spice Girls. Individually, they only had minor success. Unless one of us became Robbie, we wouldn't sell half the number of records of our own."

Do your wives, girlfriends and boyfriend get on well with each other? - John Wallace, Co. Louth, Eire

Nicky: "They do, which is great. If they didn't, it would be awkward. We were trying to come up with a name for them like the WAGS, except ours would be the Wagababs - Wives and Girlfriends and Boyfriend and Babies - which is not quite as catchy."

Mark: "It's a luxury that we can afford to fly them to where we are. It makes touring easier. If it got to the point where it was a choice between our career or our families and partners, then we'd be on the first plane home."

What did you say to The Pope? - Pamela Marks, Northampton
Shane: I was so nervous in The Vatican, I was white as a sheet, and had sweat running down me. I said it was an honour to meet him and shook his hand. The translator whispered into his ear what I said and he replied, 'Bless you my child' in Latin. It was something to tell the great-grandchildren."

Is there anything about your fans that annoys you? - Pek Kendle, Germany
Shane: "When we're in hotels some pull the fire alarms so everyone is evacuated. In Newcastle recently they did that three times in one night. It's not much fun standing outside at 8am when you're freezing cold."

'I'm Gay And In A Boy Band!' - 12 November 2006

Article shortened and only includes the parts about Mark, Kevin and V.

When agonised Boyzone star Stephen Gately finally revealed the secret of his sexuality, his fans didn't even blink. Others have followed his lead - but for some it's still a step too far.

Craig McLean

In spring and summer 2004 I spent three months, on and off, in the company of a new boy band called V. I was writing the story of their launch, which was being masterminded by Prestige, the management company that ripped up the boy band rulebook by inventing Busted and McFly: boy bands with guitars! But V would be a more traditional combo - five lads, dancing and harmonising and smiling and winking.

In the run-up to their launch, the V lads had been put up in a des res apartment complex in north London. One day I interviewed each of them in their bedroom, lobbing them starter-questions like: What's your role in the band? Who's the Robbie in V? Have you ever taken drugs? Are you gay?

They all unblinkingly denied the last one. One year later, after the band had split, one of their number, Kevin McDaid, popped up in the papers as Mark from Westlife's boyfriend. Then in August this year, a second member, Aaron Buckingham, contributed a piece to Attitude.

'No one ever made me keep my sexuality a secret,' he wrote. But a friend had recently been expelled from the line-up of a new band 'being put together by a major record label' after admitting he was gay. His manager told him: 'We're sorry but we don't want any gay guys in this band.' Buckingham reported that '[her] suspicions were apparently raised while seeing him dance in what she described as a "camp manner". It's disgusting behaviour like this which made me determined to keep my sexuality a secret ... As it turned out, two future Gatelys managed to slip through the V audition net.'

I ask Kevin McDaid why he lied to me about his sexuality. 'It was a difficult situation,' he says. 'I was in my comfort zone, in my bedroom, but that was the first time I'd been asked that.' In discussions with management and the label he had been given the choice of coming out or not. 'I felt a lot of pressure. People were saying that it wasn't a problem, but they probably would prefer me to not say anything.'

He took the advice of 'professionals' whom he felt knew more than he did about the situation. He was told that 'it might affect the band's success'. Plus, it was a personal matter.

Buckingham, who confided in McDaid that he was gay towards the end of the band's existence one year later, wrote that V were given 'a strict set of rules to abide by. I remember one of those clearly being "no visits to gay clubs".' McDaid ignored this rule. 'One of the managers would say, "You were seen at some gay club last night", and that was a problem.'

With V, a new band starting out on pop's perilous foothills, all the boxes had to be ticked, every opportunity maximised. These were enlightened times ... But why confuse the issue by having a gay member - two gay members - in a brand new boy band, explicitly targeted at young girls?

It was different when Mark Feehily came out. Westlife were already established and he and McDaid had been an item for over a year. 'It was stressful, but not over the top,' says McDaid of that period. But Feehily needed to come clean. 'I was there to hold his hand and stand by him,' says McDaid, now a photographer who shares a London flat with the Irishman. 'There's always going to be few negative comments. But that would be the same about anything - even changing his hair colour! But the support has been fantastic for him.'

Even so, Feehily declined to be interviewed for this story. From a professional point of view this is perhaps understandable: this month, Westlife release The Love Album. And for McDaid and Feehily, the first known/well-known boy band couple, it wasn't all sunshine and roses, literally. After they came out, 'I was waiting for the flowers from Elton and George and they just didn't arrive!' laughs McDaid. 'Maybe we're just not worth it, darling. Or it was so old news.'

Mark Says It Was Hard Hiding His Sexuality - 11 November 2006

WESTLIFE star Mark Feehily has revealed how hiding his sexuality from fans was harder than admitting he was gay.

The Sligo millionaire dropped a bombshell last year when he "came out" amid a blaze of publicity.

But the 26-year-old singer said the real challenge was keeping it under wraps secret for six years.

Mark told the Irish Daily Mirror: "The really scary thing was trying to keep it all a secret - that's what I found really tough.

"I was worried that something would leak out before I had the chance to say it myself.

"I wasn't at all worried when it came to the point that I actually announced I was gay - because that was nothing compared to the pressure of keeping it all a secret.

"When it all finally came out and hit the headlines it was a huge weight off my shoulders because I didn't have to live a lie in that respect.

"People often say to me that my biggest test in Westlife must have been coming out, but it was actually keeping it a secret that was the real problem." Mark has been in a long-term relationship with former boy band singer Kevin McDaid, 22.

He revealed it was his first gay encounter and is still going strong.

Mark added: "Kevin was my first relationship and the whole thing was a learning experience.

"We didn't know what to expect and how the public would view the whole thing. But to be honest it's been amazing.

"We're just a normal couple who enjoy spending time together.

"Because I'm on tour so much we have to really make the most of our time off together."

And he said he has no plans to adopt children at this stage.

He added: "It's something I haven't even thought about if I'm being completely honest.

"I don't have any big desire to have kids yet but of course you can never predict what will happen in the future.

"It would be something you couldn't rush in to because the laws for same-sex couples are so restrictive."

Westlife Star Plans €30m. ‘Landmark’ Carraroe Scheme - 9 November 2006

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The property development company owned by Westlife star, Shane Filan and his brother, Finbarr, is behind an ambitious plan to build a €30m neighbourhood centre at Carraroe.

By Leo Gray

The project, which includes shops, apartments, a public house, restaurant, doctor’s surgery, dentist’s surgery, a physiotherapy clinic and a creche, is planned for a site at Tonnafortes, close to Carraroe National School, about two miles from Sligo city.

The plan has been described as ‘a showcase development for Sligo’ by the Westlife singer, who stressed that great care had been taken to design a scheme which would provide a landmark project on one of the main entrance routes to Sligo city and which would cater for the projected needs of the expanding Carraroe area.

Meetings

A number of pre-planning meetings have taken place with the planning authorities and the proposals conform with the planning guidelines for the area.

Mr. Filan, who lives in the locality, pointed out that Carraroe was zoned for extensive development over the next number of years and said they were anxious to provide a high quality project which would set the standard for future plans.

They had worked on the design of the development over the last two years and were satisfied that they had come up with a ‘showcase’ plan, worthy of a gateway site to Sligo city.

A planning application in respect of the project will be lodged by Shafin Development Ltd with Sligo County Council.

Supermarket

The new centre, which will comprise of two separate blocks, one of which will be six storeys high, will include a supermarket of 3,000 sq.ft., a pharmacy and two other shops.

A total of 76 apartments are proposed and the overall plan will also include a creche, restaurant, surgeries for a doctor and dentist, and a physiotherapy clinic.

Car parking facilities for 247 cars will be provided, 165 underground and 82 at surface level.

The development also includes a new vehicular entrance off Pearse Road, an internal road network and landscaping.

The Carraroe project is the first Sligo development by Shafin Ltd to go to the planning stage and another exciting scheme will be submitted to the planning authorities shortly.

Meanwhile, the company reports great success with its housing development, Stonebridge, in Dromahair, which is well ahead of its sales target.

Forty clients are expected to move into their new homes in the development before Christmas and ten further houses will be released to the market soon. It is hoped that construction work on the next phase of the development will get under way next year.

Launch Of History Of Irish Tennis By Sligo Author (Mentions Mark) - 9 November 2006

TOM Higgins, a founder member of Sligo Tennis Club, embarked on a project a number of years ago.

The initial project was to record the history of tennis in the North West but within a short time Tom had accumulated so much fascinating information from all over the country that his project very quickly grew into a unique record of The History of Irish Tennis.

This book is so much more than a history; in fact, it is a magnificent achievement by any standards.

In three volumes and running to 1800 pages it is crammed full of facts, figures, anecdotes, biographical details, insights, fascinating items and hundreds and hundreds of photographs, many of which are in colour.

Extraordinary for so many reasons, this great work is a sociological document without equal, shedding light on the mores, manners and pastimes of the leisured classes in Ireland over the course of the last century and beyond.

Within it’s covers characters and personalities as diverse as Mark Feehily of Westlife and Sir Anthony O’Reilly the newspaper tycoon jostle for space beside Terry Wogan, Des Keogh and upwards on a thousand other aficionados of the game of tennis.

Tennis, the playing of it and the love of it is the glue that binds them all together.

If you still need a reason to make this book your "must have" possession then reflect on the fact you or someone close to you is almost certainly featured in it, it is just irresistible; you can’t escape it!

The Sligo launch of the book will take place in the Sligo Tennis Club at 7:30pm on Monday 4th December. Check out more details on www.historyof irishtennis.ie

The Rose Review - 9 November 2006

*****

Christmas is coming - had you noticed? Westlife have, and they're releasing a CD of classic tear jerkers, The Love Album, on 20th November. Delta Goodrem, former bandmate Brian McFadden's girlfriend, sings guest vocals on All Out Of Love.

The album begins with this superior ballad, a hit for Bette Midler in 1980. The Rose couples tender country melodies with gentle poetic lyrics and Westlife more than do it justice.

OK! Magazine Interview - 8 November 2006

© Thanx Joanne for typing it up

Issue: 546 – Date: 14 November 2006

Once upon a time, Mark Feehily was the shy, cute one from Westlife, who kept himself to himself in interviews.  But now, having bagged himself a foxy boyfriend, he seems to be full of life and is only too happy to speak his mind in a way we have never seen before. "I think its absolutely ludicrous that people are trying to force that image on to young people that you’re unacceptable unless you’re skinny", he rages when we touch briefly on the subject of skinny celebrities. "Its like walking around handing drugs to people. People get addicted to the way they look. It's a mental health issue to some people, Its just wrong.

Coming out seems to have done mark the world of good. So when we join the lads a week after the glamorous photoshoot at their record company office in West London, we are somewhat tickled when Mark starts filming us on his camera phone as we fire questions at the band. Camera shy, we shoot the full-lipped rascal a steely glance to which he flashes us a big smile and Joshes "I’m going to stick this on YOUTUBE!"

But Mark isn’t the only one who’s keeping us amused. Bandmates Shane Filan an Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne are also on top form, cracking jokes and picking fun at each other.

But as soon as we get to the serious subjects like the current trend for rock stars such as Pete Doherty and Keane’s Tom Chaplins very public stints in rehab, Mark is once again spurting off...

SO guys, what do you think if the current spate of rock stars checking into rehab?

M: Its f***ing sad that in today’s society people become cooler to a certain demographic by spending time in somewhere like the Priory.

K: Tellingly, all I seem to know is Pete Doherty for is taking drugs and excessive alcohol abuse, etc. I don’t know his music at all. The fact that papers keep writing about him so much worries me as people are seeing him as this really cool person, but sometimes with a drink and drugs addiction its definitely not cool.

N: Pete quite obviously needs help. I think it’s really sad that he is perceived as this cool person. It’s sick, in fact. The chap is not well. Look at his eyes and the scabs on his face.

Do you think it’s to make him look like a tortured hero to his fans?

M: Well, what I’d really like to know is if he’s using that whole image to better his profile, or in fact it’s the papers who are hounding him. He’s no fool. He’s an intelligent guy. I saw him being interviewed on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and he is a very talented young man with a good voice. If I was in a position like Pete Doherty I think it would seem bit weird to go somewhere like The Priory as it must be like walking into the offices of OK, because its so well known.

N: But the Priory is a place to help people with a drink or a drugs problem which I’m assuming is a confidential place to go...

M: Yes it is, but there are always leaks about who goes therein the press.

S: Probably because the people who go there tell the press themselves.

N: Well I know that if I had an alcohol problem I would go to a place where no one would know I was there.

Your mate Kerry Katona has been talking about her troubled past recently. Were you surprised by the revelations?

S: We’ve known her for a very long time and knew she’s had a very hard time going form one foster family to another. She obviously feels it’s the right time to talk about it now. She’s a lovely girl and feels now is the time to talk about it.

M: When she split form Brian McFadden and went back to Warrington, we didn’t see her much so don’t know that much about her later life, but nothing in the book has shocked us to be honest.

You’ve worked with Brian’s new girlfriend on your album, were you worried Kerry would thump you?

N: In everything we’ve red Kerry has only been complimentary about Delta so we didn’t worry about asking her to join us on the record.

M: Between us, noone wants to take sides. We called Brian first and told him we wanted to work with delta and he was fine about that. Were mature adults and that’s how we deal with all our relationships.

You’ve all grown up and settled down - but are you still being chased by groupies?

K: Our fans don’t throw themselves at us.  Even in the early days we never had girls chucking themselves at us, even though people think it did happen to us like that.  That said, I did once have a saucy letter handed tome and this girl stood there and said read it now and when I opened it, it said "Willy you have sex with me"

I just looked at her and said sorry, love but no!

Shane, how are you coping being a dad?

When my daughter Nicole was born she slept like a log for eight hours straight. We were very lucky but now she’s teething, so she’s waking up in the middle of the nigh. Gillian and I would love a couple more but in a few years time…

Kian, there’s a lot of talk about you and your girlfriend Jodi getting spliced?

We will get married when the time is right for both of us. I don’t want to get married then have to rush of to a tour straight away. So when we do get married, it’ll be when I get a year off so we can travel he world without work getting in the way. But were not going to be rushed into something which I want to take time to make perfect…

Jodi told us she wants to be a young mum...

K: I think Jodi sees 30 as young. Children will come after marriage; First of all when we do get married, we’d like to have some time to ourselves, Shane and Gillian have a daughter but have been together since they were teenagers Whilst Jodi and I have only been together for a few years. Children will be a part of our lives one day but not just now…

Mark, we hear you’re desperate to get a ring on your boyfriend Kevin’s finger...

M: No, It’s all rubbish, We’re not getting married. Basically me and Kevin are really happy and enjoying what we have. Of course there’s a bit of interest form people as it’s a gay marriage. In Ireland especially, rumours about me getting married have been in the papers quite a lot because it's a political thing. I don't think about marriage yet, we're just taking each day as it comes.

EXCLUSIVE Nicky Byrne Talks To Daily Mirror - 7 November 2006

ON BECOMING A DAD: 'I know the time is right .. I've seen the joy it brought Shane and I know my Georgina will make a great mum, ON BRIAN'S RETURN: 'I don't think he would ask to get back into Westlife, if he did we wouldn't take him back anyway,

By Paul Martin

WESTLIFE star Nicky Byrne has revealed his joy as he prepares to become a pop papa.

The singer's wife Georgina - daughter of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern - announced at the weekend she is expecting a baby in the summer.

Thrilled Nicky said: "I know the time is right for this and it's something that Georgina and I had been talking about for some time.

"It's a whole different level of responsibility bringing a child into the world.

"But I've seen what joy it brought Brian McFadden when he was in the group and more recently Shane Filan with his daughter Nicole. I want to experience that too and I know Georgina will make a great mum."

Nicky met the Daily Mirror in a plush suite in Dublin's Four Seasons hotel.

Despite having staged a day of interviews and promotions the 28-year-old is energetic and bright, wearing a pair of designer jeans and a smart jumper.

He's been working frantically since dawn but even at 6pm he still has plenty of his charm in reserve, flashing his trademark boy band smile as he leaps up and offers to make tea.

The singer's soon reflecting on Westlife's amazing resurrection since Brian's dramatic exit from the group three years ago.

He explains: "I don't think that Brian would ever ask to come back to the band. But the honest answer would be that we wouldn't have him back in the group anyway.

"We all get on great with Brian but we couldn't go back to having five in the group because it was such an upheaval when he left.

"We had to re-build and start from scratch and we're a different group now. We've moved on and Brian knows that as much as we do.

"If you are asking me if we would let him re-join the group then the answer is no."

He concedes: "At the time I suppose we did all feel a bit hurt and abandoned by the whole Brian thing because we were emotional about what was happening.

"We were taking a huge step into the unknown when Brian left. I think we all felt a bit vulnerable and scared. That was probably the toughest thing we ever went through as a band but it brought us closer together.

"I think a lot of people wrote us off and thought we would be finished - like when Robbie Williams left Take That."

Far from folding, the stars bounced back within six months with a No1 album and sell-out world tour.

Yet Nicky knows how unpredictable the fickle world of showbiz can be. He cautiously accepts: "We have to be strong now because another member leaving the group would be the end. We know that, yet we also know it won't happen.

YES of course sometimes we'll have a really heated discussion, debate or even row about what song to release or where we want to tour.

"These things are important to us and we all have different ideas on what is right.

"But we argue it out and then reach a decision. It's a democracy and it works well for us."

He adds with a grin: "And none of us have ever hit each other - that's not bad for a group of lads who have been on the road together for eight years."

Meanwhile, all bets are on when it comes to what Nicky and Georgina, 27, will name their baby.

Boylesports were offering odds yesterday on what Bertie's first grandchild will be called.

Nicky is the favourite choice for a boy at 16/1 followed closely by Bertie, after his famous grandfather at 20/1.

If it's a girl, Cecelia at 25/1, the name of Georgina's younger sister, is joint favourite with Mary, the first name of the Republic's Minister for Health.

As a tribute to the Taoiseach's other colleagues, Justice Minister Michael McDowell and Finance Minister Brian Cowen, Michael is at 25/1 and Brian is 33/1.

If it's a bouncing little girl, Georgina may wish to give a special nod to her mother by calling the new arrival Miriam.

Nicky may look to some of his own songs for inspiration when naming his first born.

The band had a hit with Mandy and Boylesports are offering odds of 66/1 that it comes out tops for the new parents.

At 150/1, Gertie is the rank outsider for Westlife's new arrival followed by odds of 40/1 that it will be twins and 300/1 that Georgina will have triplets.

Westlife To Get Personal In Video - 6 November 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Irish boyband Westlife are allowing fans to play a part in their latest music video.

Visitors to the group's website can "star" in a custom version of the video simply by submitting their name.

The name is then integrated into several scenes, appearing on a wedding invitation and a text message sent by a member of the group.

The interactive video, which is for the band's twentieth single, The Rose, was created by British firm 20:20 London.

They have used the technology before to put user's names in online adverts for films and video games, but this is the first time it has been used in a music video.

Westlife are one of the most successful pop acts of recent years, with a tally of 13 number one singles in the UK.

Often derided for their reliance on cover versions and ballads, the quartet have nonetheless sold more than 35 million records worldwide.

They have been together for eight years and survived the departure of original member Bryan McFadden in 2004.

Byrne Baby Byrne - 6 November 2006

Westlife star Nicky & Bertie's girl pregnant

By Maeve Quigley

NICKY Byrne and his wife Georgina are expecting their first child - making Taoiseach Bertie Ahern a grandad by the summer.

Westlife star Nicky, 28, and 27-year-old Georgina - who is the Bertie's eldest daughter - announced yesterday she was pregnant.

A spokeswoman said: "Nicky and Georgina Byrne are delighted to announce they are expecting their first child next summer."

The couple would not comment further but pals said they were overjoyed.

One friend added: "They are both over the moon - it's wellknown that Nicky and Georgina have always wanted a family. So they are really delighted."

Yesterday Bertie said he was thrilled to learn he would soon have a grandchild. He added: "Needless to say we are all delighted with the good news. Georgina and Nicky are very special people in our lives and our thoughts and prayers will be with them in the coming months."

And when asked how he felt about becoming a grandad, Bertie gushed: "Well, if it is half as good as being a father and brings me anywhere near the pride and joy that fatherhood brought me then I am really looking forward to it."

Bertie added the news that Westlife had got a new contract meant his grandchild's future would be secure.

He said: "He'll probably need the money in the future to look after his children. I think we all have to plan not just for our children, but for our children's children and I suppose it shows that's not too far away."

Nicky and Georgina have been together for over a decade after they met at school in Baldoyle.

The couple got married at Wicklow Registry Office in August 2003 and their union was blessed four days later at the Church of St Pierre et St Paul in Gallardon, Eure-et-Loir, France.

Both have spoken openly about their wish for children. Nicky even admitted he became broody when bandmate Shane Filan and his wife Gillian had baby Nicole in July last year.

Meanwhile, the proud couple attended a wedding in Sligo at the weekend before giving Bertie moral support at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in the CityWest Hotel.

An onlooker said: "Georgina and Nicky turned up at the Ard Fheis on Saturday night. They gave Bertie a hug before he went onstage to deliver his key address. Maybe they had just broken the news to him that he was going to be a grandad."

Joy For Bertie As Georgina To Have Baby - 6 November 2006

By Eoin English

FROM Teflon Taoiseach to doting grandad.

Bertie Ahern, who’s kissed more than his fair share of babies on the campaign trail, might be able to get a little hands-on practice in ahead of next year’s election after his eldest daughter, Georgina, confirmed she and her husband, Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, are expecting their first child next summer.

A public relations firm issued a one-line statement on behalf of the couple yesterday morning stating: “Nicky and Georgina Byrne are delighted to announce that they are expecting their first child next summer.”

A spokesperson declined to give an exact due date but said the couple are “over the moon”.

Mr Ahern, who confronted the worst personal crisis of his nine years as Taoiseach last month, spoke of his joy at the good news yesterday.

“I thought they were going to make the announcement tomorrow. But I’m very happy for them,” he said.

And referring to Westlife’s new deal with their record label, Sony/BMG, reported to be worth up to e6 million, Mr Ahern said: “He’ll [Nicky] need the money in the future to look after his children.”

Georgina, 27, will continue to work as a fitness instructor at the new Jurys Hotel at Croke Park.

And while Nicky and the band have a number of sell-out concerts next March and April as part of their Love Album Tour, the spokesperson said he will ensure he has ample time in his diary next summer. The band’s schedule is clear from May to July.

Paddy Power were offering bets last night on the baby’s name.

Nicky, after Nicky’s father, and Kelly, which is Georgina’s mother’s maiden name, were the hot favourites at 10/1.

Bertie is further down the list at 33/1 while Celia and Enda are rank outsiders at 250/1.

Georgina married her childhood sweetheart, Nicky, on August 5, 2003, at Wicklow Registry Office.

The civil ceremony was followed in September by a church blessing at the church of St Pierre et St Paul in Gallardon, Eure-et-Loir, France, and a lavish reception at the nearby 16th century Château d’Esclimont.

I'M pleased to announce WESTLIFE star NICKY BYRNE and his wife of three years GEORGINA are set to become first-time parents.

Taoiseach Gets Set To Become A Granddad In Summer - 6 November 2006

FORGET the general election - Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has other things on his mind now that he is set to become a grandfather for the first time next summer.

The Taoiseach's eldest daughter, Georgina (26) and her husband Nicky Byrne (28), of Westlife fame, announced yesterday they are expecting their first child.

"Nicky and Georgina Byrne are delighted to announce they are expecting their first child next summer," said the brief statement issued by their spokesperson.

The couple, who are married three years, are said to be "over the moon" and "absolutely delighted" by the news. They are keeping the exact month of the baby's birth a secret for now, other than to say the child will be born next summer. The young couple told their respective families their good news recently and then announced it publicly yesterday.

Next summer looks set to be an exceptionally busy one for the Ahern household between the new baby and the general election, in which Mr Ahern will be aiming for a historic third term.

In the past couple of days, Nicky hinted that a baby could be on the cards or himself and Georgina, who is a fitness instructor and business graduate.

"We have been together since we were about 16 and we always said that when we feel the time is right, we'll start thinking about having kids and we think that maybe we're at the stage now," said Nicky late last week.

The couple attended the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in Dublin on Saturday night. They appeared briefly on television as they hugged Mr Ahern before he made his keynote address.

Speaking on RTE radio yesterday, Mr Ahern said he was "delighted" that he was going to be a grandfather. "I'm very happy for them," he added.

€6m Westlife May Go For 10 At The Point - 4 November 2006

THEY haven't gone away, you know. Indeed, they have no plans to.

Westlife were in Dublin yesterday to announce details of extra concert dates at the Point in April, as word began to filter through that the four lads have been in talks with their record label and have just re-signed.

That is "re-signed" and not "resigned", folks.

The new deal with Sony/BMG - rumoured to be worth €6m - means there will be even more Westlife albums, just as there will be even more Westlife concerts.

Not for the first time, Brian McFadden must be questioning his decision making.

"We have no timeframe on how long we will go on," Kian Egan said yesterday at the Four Seasons in Dublin. "As long as we're enjoying it, we will continue to do it. We're actually getting better as a live band."

Having performed 384 shows since 2001, you'd have hoped the lads would have picked up something. Not an instrument, of course, but something, and seeing the bottom line is as good a skill as any boyband member could have.

"The run at the Point might yet stretch to 10, so it would be stupid of us guys to throw that opportunity away," Kian said.

The band's new single - 'The Rose' - is expected to go straight to number one next week. The new album will be released just in time for Christmas.

"It looks like they're going to go on forever," manager Louis Walsh said, confirming the fears of many. "The new contract is for several more albums."

We also learned that Shane Filan's dog was knocked down on Thursday. The dog is doing grand now though. His owner and three mates? More like cats that got the cream.

*Tickets for the extra dates go on sale today from 9am from Ticketmaster and are priced from €38.70.

Article shortened and only includes the part about Mark and Kevin. For the whole article and pictures click here

Later that night we caught up with one of Brian's former Westlife band mates Mark Feehily as he withdrew some cash from the ATM outside Lillies Bordello.

Mark then ran off in the other direction towards a waiting taxi leaving his boyfriend Kevin McDaid standing in the street. It looked like he paid the cab driver before hooking back up with his fella and heading into Lillies…

Time To Relax With Kian Egan - 1 November 2006

© Thanx Ruthy for typing it up

Kian Egan joined Westlife eight years ago at 18, and he’s played a major part of the band's success story. His relationship with ex-hollyoaks star Jodi Albert created a media frenzy with speculation of an engagement. He's very proud of the band and their latest album, The Love Album.

Did you always want to be in a band?
Yes! I was first on stage at four years old, doing poetry readings. I then took up guitar and piano lessons at 12, I put together my first semi-rock band. I’ve been in a band ever since.

Westlife have been producing chart topping hits for 8 years- what’s your secret?
Well, we’ve always made sure we've stuck to our roots and produced great pop songs right from day one. We create songs that people can sing along to, and what we enjoy working on - and we’ve got no plans to stop doing so!

You have a new album coming out what can we expect to hear from it
Its a love songs album, we've picked out the best songs around - some that people will have never heard and some more well known ones. It’s a great album for a dinner party or romantic evening.

What’s your favourite Westlife single?
Its hard to say, flying without wings was a huge hit for us, but I think you raise me up is one that really stands out for me.

Do you get on well when you’re on tour?
Yeah, really well if we didn’t I don’t think we would still be together – you’re with each other all the time on the road.

Do any of the boys have irritating habits?
Everyone has annoying habits but you just have to get used to them. Mark is always late, Shane has a short attention span, Nicky gets wound up easily and I’m sure they'd all say I’ve got irritating habits, too!

You've been with Jodi for a while now - how do you cope being so far apart so much of the time?
We cope well. If she’s not working she'll travel to see me, and vice versa. We understand each others careers which is great. We do manage to see each other quite a lot.

If you weren’t in Westlife what do you think you would be doing now?
I’d think I would be trying to get into a band! I’ve followed music all my life, so if wasn’t in it now in a big way, I’d be doing something in a smaller way. I’ve always wanted to be performing on stage.
