Westlife Face The Truth – Mark Interview - 31 August 2006

by Myles Wearring

WESTLIFE’S OPENLY GAY MARK FEEHILY DISCUSSES COMING OUT, BEING IN A BOYBAND AND HOW HAVING A BOYFRIEND CHANGED EVERYTHING.

One year ago this month, Mark Feehily, member of Irish boyband Westlife, publicly came out of the closet. In the UK, where the band is considered pop royalty, the event was front page news.

Speaking on what was supposed to be the eve of the band’s first Australian tour – the tour has just been postponed until 2007 – Feehily said he didn’t out himself because the tabloids were threatening to do it for him (as was apparently the case for Stephen Gately from Boyzone, who came out in 1999). He simply felt it was finally time to do it.

“I always say I should’ve done it years ago,” Feehily told Sydney Star Observer from his home in London. “But as for anyone else, it’s about finding the right time when you feel 100 percent happy to do it. And I was 100 percent happy to do it.

“The band seemed to be going strong and in order for me to be happy and move forward I just wanted to get it out of the way. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life by a mile, because it’s just made my life so much better.”

Most boybands don’t last long – “technically” they are only meant to last three or four years, according to Feehily. Yet Westlife are still hot property seven years after their first hit single, Swear It Again. They’ve sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and their seventh record, Face To Face, shot to number one on the Australian charts earlier this year.

“Nobody expected the band to last this long, and I kind of never knew whether or not I was going to have to face up to it and come out publicly, if I was ever going to be asked to do that,” he said.

Because the band’s four members regularly grace the pages of Britain’s celebrity-obsessed tabloids, when Feehily became involved in his “first proper relationship” with singer Kevin McDaid, who was in former British boyband V, he realised the time was right to do it.

“Obviously when I started going out with Kevin I thought, I don’t want to sneak around, to go for dinner and be scared someone’s going to see us and put two and two together.”

The 26-year-old’s friends, family and bandmates had known he was gay for years and were all supportive. And, to his surprise, after he went public so were his fans.

“I didn’t know what to expect from the fans because of the way boybands are designed to appeal. I was bracing myself for any amount of reactions. But to this day, a year later, I haven’t experienced even one word of negative response, which is fantastic.”

This is due partly, he said, because he never tried to use sex appeal to attract female fans like some boyband members. Instead he hoped they would just appreciate him for his voice (Feehily is widely regarded as having the strongest voice in the band).

“I think Westlife has always been more about the songs than about having six-packs, because none of us do have six-packs anyway,” he laughed.

Plus he made a point of not lying about his sexuality. “Obviously being in a pop band like this you’re always doing interviews with newspapers and magazines and it was definitely kind of weird or awkward speaking about my love life. But I just tried my best to remain as honest as possible without actually giving away that side of me until I was ready to do it.”

Since Feehily came out last year, Lance Bass from NSYNC has followed suit, as has Australia’s own Darren Hayes. And the more openly gay people in the public eye the better, Feehily reckons. He said he’d received lots of letters from young people saying they’d felt brave enough to come out since he had done it.

He and McDaid are still together and going strong, he said, but rumours they were planning a civil partnership aren’t true. Not yet anyway.

“If I was, the whole world would know because it’s something I’d be celebrating,” he said. “I wouldn’t be keeping it quiet.”

Westlife Tour To Touch Down In Taiwan - 31 August 2006

By Daphne Su Special to The China Post

Pop sensation Westlife are coming back to Taiwan to perform on Sept. 10 at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC).

The Irish group brought the world such hits as "Flying Without Wings," "Swear It Again," "Seasons in the Sun," "Uptown Girl" and now "You Raise Me Up."

Promoting their seventh and newest album, "Face to Face," Westlife are touring Asia in September.

Among the songs they will perform, their latest single and cover version of a Secret Garden song, "You Raise Me Up," was number one on UK charts along with its album "Face to Face."

The band's musical influences include the Backstreet Boys, Boyzone and Boyz II Men.

Westlife is the only artist to win "Record of the Year" four times in a row in the UK. They have seven multi-platinum albums and have sold almost 40 million albums worldwide.

At their Taiwan performance, they will reportedly link arms, pray and burn incense to ward off bad luck from the Ghost Month.

Taiwan fans have been rushing to get the best seats. Tickets for the September 10 concert range from NT$1000 to NT$3500. To buy tickets, call (02)-23419898 or visit http://www.ticket.com.tw .

From Five To Four, Yet Fans Want More - 29 August 2006

HE was always the quiet one in the background, leaving his more outspoken bandmates to face the limelight.

But ever since Westlife heart-throb Mark Feehily admitted to being gay, the spotlight has come to rest on him.

When The New Paper spoke to him over the phone from London, he sounded positive and energetic.

'My fans have accepted me for who I am, and I am still doing the one thing that I love the most, and that is singing,' said the 26-year-old.

Following Feehily's public outing, Lance Bass of US boy band 'N Sync also declared that he was gay in July.

Does Feehily think he has started a trend?

The dark-haired crooner laughed it off. He was more candid about how Westlife was getting on without former member Brian McFadden.

'We've settled very comfortably as a four-member band. Bryan will always be a friend, but I really don't think we miss him anymore.'

This year marks the eighth anniversary of the Irish band, who will perform in Singapore for the third time on 8 Sep, as part of their Face To Face Asian Tour.

With their growing fan base, Westlife seems set to remain on the scene for a few more years.

Feehily said: 'We're not like the Spice Girls with Geri (Halliwell) and Take That with Robbie (Williams) - great bands that have met with internal disagreements and fallen apart.'

'The boys and I have been friends since we were 10 and understand one another.'

However, he already has a Plan B should things go wrong.

'I'll sing my days away,' he said. 'Be it in theatre, or just a regular pub, I know that I will always be out there singing and performing.'

CD Piracy Weighs On Music Industry - 28 August 2006

LONDON (Reuters) - The music industry lost an estimated 165 million pounds in 2005 due to CD piracy, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said on Monday.

The trade organisation said the losses amounted to more than the combined legal sales of the top 13 albums in the country last year, namely James Blunt, Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Kaiser Chiefs, Gorillaz, Westlife, Now 62, KT Tunstall, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Faithless, Katie Melua and Killers.

The BPI estimates about 37 million pirate compact discs are sold across Britain annually, and, according to an independent study of 2,000 people aged 15 years and above, 45 percent would have bought the original if fakes had not been available.

"This amounts to 16.5 million lost sales, or 165 million pounds in lost revenue," it said in a statement.

The survey was carried out in February and March this year.

The BPI urged the police to make intellectual property crime more of a priority and called for regulation of car boot sales and markets as well as making company directors liable when employees took part in piracy.

"Already the UK has a world-beating recording industry, but it will struggle to remain that way with its piracy problems worsening year on year," said BPI chairman Peter Jamieson.

In April this year, the same group reported that losses in 2005 from illegal filesharing on the Internet reached 414 million pounds and 1.1 billion pounds in the three years to 2005.

If I Was Watching Me On TV I Would Probably Think, 'He's A Little Bollix' - 27 August 2006

Louis Walsh Interview. Shortened and only includes the bits he mentions Westlife. To read all the interview click here

LOUIS WALSH is the Truman Capote of his generation - relentlessly observant, murderously witty and shamelessly catty. Often in thesame sentence . . .

He is not a fan of Bob Geldof either. "I think the 45 people who went to see him in Rome recently were very, very brave," Louis laughs, referring to poor Geldof's disastrous concert in Italy. "We have that many people in the loo at a Westlife gig. I don't like Geldof's music at all. He is a Mick Jagger impersonator."

Dazzlingly scandalous, Louis casually reveals conversations that were possibly never meant for public consumption. However, since he does so with a wit worthy of Dorothy Parker or Tallulah Bankhead, you have to adore him. When Louis said on Celebrity X Factor that contestant Gillian McKeith "looks like she was hit by a bus", he was merely saying what most of us were thinking. (Gillian later told the Sun that Walsh needed "a super-charged enema".) Likewise the notorious comment about rotund Green Party TD Dan Boyle on Celebrity You're a Star . . .

"I couldn't understand the uproar when I said, 'Get rid of the fat one'," he smiles now. "I thought he would have taken it in fun. It wasn't meant to be a personal thing. And the fat one took it personally and threw a wobbler. Wobbly threw a wobbler! I was just trying to be funny and he had absolutely no sense of humour. I think all politicians are the same. I don't believe any of them. I don't trust any of them. Generally Irish politicians are the oddest-looking shower of people I have ever seen."

Even Nicky Byrne from Westlife's father-in-law?

"I think they are all awful," he reiterates. "Absolutely no star quality, the lot of them."

Clearly, the Irish priesthood's loss is popular music's gain. "I am just a man," he claims, "who understands pop." This is something of an understatement. He has had more number one records than any Irish manager in popular history. He created bands like Boyzone, Westlife and Girls Aloud and made them into global phenomena. He made Shayne Ward an international star.

A firm believer in loyalty, Louis went to support his old friend (and co-manager of Boyzone) John Reynolds at his Midlands Festival recently in Co Meath. He delighted in how well Shane Lynch did on the recent Love Island reality show. He keeps in regular contact with Brian McFadden.

He hasn't lost touch with the ex-Westlife star, nor with himself. Louis has the emotional intelligence to admit that he is more proud of his friendship with Joan Rivers than of any other celebrity contacts he has. He laughs. "She is 73 and she is brilliant. She is a great woman and a very nice woman off camera and off stage. She is a one-off."

Unforgettably, Louis gained additional renown by making up the odd story or two about his bands to keep them in the papers: sensational falsehoods like Westlife in near-fatal plane crashes and Stephen Gately getting engaged to Baby Spice Emma Bunton.

Was Kerry Katona the Yoko Ono influence of Westlife?

"No. I just think Kerry and Brian were too young to get married. They wouldn't listen to anybody. They wouldn't listen to me. They shouldn't have got married." There is a pause and then a knowing wink. " . . . to each other". He laughs. "But who am I to tell them? Brian is really happy. We are best friends. We are probably closer and more honest than we ever were. I don't know any band that gets on as well as me and Westlife and Brian."

Shedloads of money and gargantuan success haven't blunted his ambition. "I do want to do one more boy band by the way," he admits. "And I'm going to do it next year. It will be five boys. That's allI know."

Does that mean you are making the funeral arrangements for Westlife? "Oh no. Westlife have crossed over. Their audience is not young kids any more. Westlife can go on as long as they want because their audience are mammies and daddies now.

"Westlife are like the Bee Gees," he says. "And they are happier as a four-piece, even though I am still really good friends with Brian McFadden. Honestly! Honestly! Honestly!" he roars like his mum getting him up for altar boy duties at mass.

"There is absolutely no bullshit there. Westlife are even doing a duet with Delta," he says referring to Brian's chanteuse girlfriend Delta Goodrem.

His trusty Blackberry whirrs again. It is Simon Cowell. And then Rebecca Loos. And then Shane Filan from Westlife. Louis blows the froth off yet another cappuccino and looks out the window of this famously trendy Dublin cafe.

Westlife’s Amazing Eur2M Each To Tour - 25 August 2006

Byline: By PAUL MARTIN

WESTLIFE have been offered e2million each to tour again next year, the Irish Daily Mirror can reveal.

The Flying Without Wings stars will enjoy their biggest ever payday by hitting the road for a 50-date European tour.

Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne have already signed on the dotted line to make it one of the most lucrative tours in pop history.

A source close to the group revealed last night: "The lads are absolutely thrilled - this is a huge payday for them.

"They are going to hit the road early next year and have been given a guarantee of how much they will make.

"They will be bringing the new album out and then staging a series of spectacular live shows."

The band will perform at Dublin's Point, Belfast's Odyssey Arena and Cork's Millstreet venue as part of the tour.

They will hire top concert specialists to create a visually stunning performance designed to top any of their past tours.

The source added: "The lads can sell out any arena in the UK and Ireland so the sky's the limit.

"They are now one of the biggest earners in pop and they are going to continue earning the big money."

Music industry figures estimate that each of the singers has pocketed more than e12million so far.

They have topped the earning charts with No1 albums, live shows and huge promotion deals.

Kian, 26, recently revealed: "We have made really good money and we know we are lucky.

"The main thing for us these days is making good records and putting on good shows.

"Money isn't the main motivation."

All the Westlife stars own palatial properties in Ireland and the UK.

Shane has built his own mansion in Sligo while Kian also has a home in the town and an apartment in Chelsea.

Mark owns properties in Sligo and trendy Camden while Nicky enjoys a six-bedroom mansion in Dublin.

Soapstar Sexpot - 25 August 2006

Jodi Albert goes from Hollyoaks to hooker in her new TV role

She's best known for her role as Debbie Dean in Hollyoaks and, of course, her famous boyfriend, Westlife's Kian Egan. But Jodi Albert, 23, is back on our screens as prostitute Hayley in new five sitcome Respectable. We caught up with the star to find out all about the show and her plans for the future...

You play a hooker in your new show Respectable. Is it a bit sleazy?

"No it's not sleazy or tacky. It's clever and quick-witted. The relationship between all the girls has a bit of Sex and the city vibe. But it's unique and I think people will enjoy it."

Are there any naughty scenes in it?

"No, it's all kind of suggestive. It's more about the comedy timing and the situations. For the girls in the brothel where my character works, it's just a job. You see them all just sitting around in the kitchen reading magazines, filing their nails in between clients and having coffee. It's fun."

You weren't expected to do any research, though?

"No, not really! The thing is that the show is so light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek that there's nothing serious about it. I didn't have to do anything rude."

So you wouldn't worry about your family or boyfriend watching it?

"No, no! I wouldn't mind them watching it at all. I'd be quite proud of it."

Your character Hayley dreams of making it as a reality TV star. What do you think of reality TV?

"I did take part of a type of reality TV show before, called California Dreaming, but that was more like a documentary. It was very much about my career - about acting lessons and agents, stuff like that."

Did anything come out of your time in LA?

"Actually, when I was there, I went for a film casting and I got the part. But then one of my best friends was in a tragic car accident, so I turned down the film and flew home to be with my parents. It was all bad timing, really."

Would you ever consider taking part in a show like Love Island

"No, I like watching celebrity reality TV shows, but I don't want to take part in one."

But we heard you were to take part in X Factor: Battle of the stars

"Yes, that's true. There were some conversations about it, but it wasn't really right for me. It was fun to watch, though."

You were voted Sexiest Female at last year's British Soap Awards. Do you ever wish you weren't so damn pretty?

"I don't take it too seriously, you know! I feel very flattered. I take it as a compliment, but generally I don't get wrapped up in looks. I'm not one of those people who would spend two hours getting ready. I'm not a dieting freak. I don't ever starve myself or anything ridiculous."

So, what's next for you career-wise?

"I'd love Respectable to do really well and do a second series. I think as long as I can keep doing something - whether it be acting, singing or dancing - I'll be happy, because they're my passion in life. As long as I'm doing one or the other, I don't mind."

Would you ever consider joining a girlband again [Jodi was a member of Girl Thing]?

"I loved being part of a band, and I loved singing and performing, so who knows what could happen? I wouldn't rule it out."

Do you see anyone from Hollyoaks?

"I do. I got a lot of friends from the show. I still keep in contact with Andy McNair who played my on-screen boyfriend, Dan. He's a really nice guy. And one of my best friends, Carley Stenson, played my sister Steph. I loved Hollyoaks. It was a good part of my life. I'm proud of that."

Catch Jodi in Respectable on Wednesday at 10:30pm on five.

Taking a break from our glamorous shoot in our secret East London location, Jodi Albert is quite happy chatting to OK crew about how she and her other half, Westlife's Kian Egan, are always spotted in public, particularly on the underground. "We can be wearing baseball caps pulled down over our eyes," she says "but some girl will always spot Kian - and on the Tube there’s no escape!"

Of course once Jodi's new TV show Respectable starts in a week or so, it won’t be just her hunk of a boyfriend who will be recognised. In the hilarious new Five sitcom, Jodi raises temperatures as a sexy prostitute working in a brothel. But don’t worry - it’s not as grubby as it sounds, as Jodi is keen to assure us. "If there were any vulgar sex scenes that I didn’t think were necessary, I wouldn’t have done it. But its a comedy, they’ve done it in a way where its not sleazy.

here the gorgeous 23 year old former Hollyoaks beauty reveals all about her plans for marriage and babies, her take on celeb sex videos and why she doesn’t get Kinky for Kian.

HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE HALF OF ONE OF SHOWBIZ'S MOST GLAMOROUS COUPLES?
When I was a little girl I always thought id fall in love and I always believed my prince charming And I’m lucky now I have had my knight in shining armour sweep me off my feet.

YOU MET KIAN 7 YEARS AGO. THAT’S A LONG TIME IN THE WORLD OF CELEBRITY
I met him when I was 15 but we didn’t start dating until I was 19. Kian was such a gentleman. He wasn’t a sleazebag. He knew I was young and that I had respect for myself. He waited so then I knew his feelings were true.

IS THERE A SECRET TO SUCH A LONG LASTING RELATIONSHIP
There’s none at all! All I know is the more years we are together, the more in love we are, and the more time we spend together, the harder it is to be apart. When you find someone who is your best friend, your soulmate and your boyfriend wrapped up in one, it never becomes a chore

HAVE YOU BOTH THOUGHT ABOUT CHILDREN?
We talk about it all the time. We are very much in love but we don’t want to rush anything. With the way our careers are, we have things to do so its all about timing. We both want to get marries and have a fairy tale wedding, I will be pulling out all the stops No expense will be spared, which is why I want to be in the position to do it well. We both want a huge wedding

AND THEN YOU'LL THINK ABOUT KIDS?
When I have them, .I want to be able to devote my life to them. I want to be a young mum, but that could be any time up until I’m 30. Kian and I want to enjoy each others company before we introduce a third party

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW SHOW-IN WHICH YOU PLAY A HOOKER
My character, Hayley, is the kind of fun-loving girl who wants to be in Big Brother. The show is like Sex and the city but set in a brothel with a sense of humour like the office.

ARE YOU YOURSELF A BIT OF A PRUDE OR ARE YOU A SEX KITTEN?
I’m a very girlie girl when it comes to romance. I’m quite shy – I’m old-fashioned. I like to be treated like a lady and act like a lady

SO WE WONT BE SEEING ANY PARIS HILTON STYLE VIDEOS FEATURING YOU AND KIAN
No you certainly won’t get that from me. I don’t understand why so many celebrities make those videos. It’s not worth taking the risk

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO APPEAR ON CELEBRITY X-FACTOR - WHAT HAPPENED?
It wasn’t for me. But music isn’t over for me. I haven’t got any plans and I’m not going to rule it out. But I don’t want to be a cheesy soap star turned pop star. I don’t want to be dolled up in a pop puppet.

BUT YOU WERE IN SIMON COWELL’S ANSWER TO THE SPICE GIRLS - GIRL THING
It was a great experience, but the girls in the band couldn’t get on. For me, I loed it. I got on with everyone. It was a cool job, because I got taken out of school and travelled the whole world. But I’m glad it ended when I was 17 because I got to do other things

YOU’RE A CURVY GIRL DO YOU DIET?
No I eat what I want, little and often, If I want chocolate, ill have it. I don’t believe in starving myself. I do like dancing. so that probably always helps When ever we go to a club we are always dancing

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE NICOLE RICHIE’S OF THIS WORLD?
I don’t like all these really skinny celebs. Women are making themselves look like really skinny celebs. Give me Beyonce anyday. It’s not attractive and its a little creepy. I feel sorry for Nicole because she feels she has to look a certain way.

The Boys Are Back In Town - 24 August 2006

Thanx Rachie

Westlife’s SHANE FILAN, 27, chats with Celine Tan about going back to their syrupy, ballady roots, and yes, panty projectiles.

8 DAYS: People say the boyband is dead. What do you think?

SHANE FILAN: I don’t think so. We’re not dead! I think Westlife is just as successful as we were five years ago. Face To Face [the seventh album, released last October] was huge across Europe. But it’s true that there are fewer boybands out there than before, and there’s less good talent around. We came at a time which was very good for boybands, seven years ago, and we’ve stock around. If crap bands come out, they don’t stick around, because they’re just not good enough.

Does the flak from being in a boyband bother you?

I really don’t care about that. They can say, boyband this, and boyband that. We’re a boyband, pop group, whatever you want to call us. We have a very nice life. We’ve made a lot of money, and we’ve got nicer cars than they do. (laughs)

Things are very different for you now, though. You’re married and your baby girl just had her first birthday.

Oh yes, it was unbelievable. We did a concert on her birthday, near London, and I brought her up to the stage. It was the first time I showed her to 20.000 people. They all sung “Happy Birthday” to her.

Cool. Have your fans changed too?

We have an older fan base now. The girls who loved us when they were 14 or 15 are now 23, 24 years old. A lot of them understand that we’re normal guys and that we have normal lives. I’m happy that our personal lives are so normal.

Do you still get under-wear flung at you?

Oh yes! We always get the underwear! (Chuckles) We might get two or three per concert. It still happens! Actually, we get more now. The fans used to be younger – they were girls not women. They didn’t dare to take off their underwear. But we don’t take it too seriously - we make a joke of it.

Aren’t you guys sick of singing ballads yet? The new album is full of syrupy ballads.

No, not really. I love singing ballads. That’s what we’re good at – we’re good singers. We tried a different sound on [our fifth album] Turnaround. It was deeper, darker and it didn’t work as well. It wasn’t a brilliant album. Face To Face is typical Westlife. We’ve gone back to those first albums. The next album, which we’re now working on and will be out end of the year, is like that as well. It’s why people love us, it’s been proven so many times. It’s music we love to make, those big power ballads.

Mark Feehily said he could see Face To Face’s first single “You Raise Me Up” becoming a favourite at weddings and funerals like “Swear It Again”! Isn’t that kind of morbid?

Well if a song can reach out to two completely different markets – the sad and the happy – then it’s a very successful song.

Cover Story: Facing Up To Westlife - 24 August 2006

-by Terrina Hussein –

Westlife’s nicky fesses up to the boy band way of life.

After a four months break, one of the biggest groups is back on the fast track to world –wide musical domination.

Westlife took a well deserved break from the limelight, after the success of their 2004 tribute cover album to Frank Sinatra, Allow Us To Be Frank, in which time Nicky, Kian, Shane and Mark took time out to rejuvenated their batteries.

It was their longest break since the boys self titled debut album in 1999 catapulted them to boy-band superstardom. The departure of member Bryan McFadden in 2004 didn’t dampen the remaining boys spirit in the slightest.

And after six multi-platinum albums in the UK, numerous Brit and MTV awards, 12 Number Ones and 35 million albums sold over their seven year career, they still insist that the four months break was too long.

“We had nearly four months off and it felt like three years,” laughs Nicky, “the break made us realise how much we wanted to start work again. At the end of it I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio.”

Their seventh album sees them teaming up once again with long term collaborator and friend, Steve Mac, and Swedish hit-makers The Location (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Nsync), to release their latest venture, Face To Face.

The album features the boys taking on three of the most popular tracks of all time.

The first single is their remake of Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up where they gave it an Irish feel by adding bagpipes to the track.

That was quickly followed by another heartbreaker and chart-maker, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, a duet with Diana Ross.

Their third single from Face To Face is an original song, Amazing, which sees the boys do what they do best: soppy, heart wrenching love ballads. Also included is their version of The Eagle’s Desperado.

Fans won’t be worried, because the rest of the album is full of original tracks, the sort that Westlife does best, with enough happy pop tunes and love songs to tickle everyone’s boy band fancy.

New tracks include That’s Where You Find Love, She’s Back, Colour My World, In This Life, Heart Without A Home, Hit You With The Real Thing, Change Your Mind and Maybe Tomorrow.

Recording for Face to Face was spread throughout Ireland, Sweden and London, but Westlife aren’t tired yet. They’re already in the midst of their world promo tour, with Malaysia being a possible new addition to their tour destinations… if Westlife member, Nicky has anything to do with it.

Buzz caught up with Westlife member Nicky, to find out what’s up with one of the most popular boy bands in the universe.

How’s the tour been so far?
Great, but tiring! It’s been a good time though, the crowd seems to really be enjoying themselves every time we play. It’s amazing for me to see that, Westlife’s been together for almost eight years now, and we’re still packing them in.

Where’ve you guys played?
So far, we’ve played the U.K, Ireland and South Africa. Our shows have an amazing feel when we play the open air at castles around England. We hit Asia soon and then we’ll be heading for Australia next.

Where would you say has the best audiences?
Well, since I’m Irish, I’ll have to say Ireland! Playing home is fantastic, the crowd go crazy. We’ve never played Australia though, so we’re looking forward to that.

How different would you say asian fans are compared to western fans?
It’s been six years since we last played in Asia, so it’s been too long, we’re due for a return. But what I can remember about Asian fans is that they were a little more
polite when they meet you, but when they’re at the concert, they go crazy, they really do! They show that they’re enjoying themselves by singing along to the songs.

Over 30 million albums sold in your career with westlife – what does that mean to you?
Well, in a way it tells us that we’ve made it in the industry. But while saying that, we also have to remember that there’s no room for complacency. You’re only as good as your last album. There is always room for improvement. Perhaps when you’ve sold 60 million you can sit back a little and relax, but not now, there’s still so much more we can accomplish. But it is a proud feeling. It’s something we didn’t know we could achieve. But the fact that we’ve lasted this long, having overcome so many things like Brian leaving, and we continue to forge forward shows us we’ve got a lot more kick left. We’re not finished yet!

Would you guys ever look for a new member?
No, I don’t think we’ll ever have a new member. We’ve managed to sustain ourselves very happily as a four piece group. Besides, I’d much rather split finances four ways than five ways!

What would you do if this whole ride stopped tomorrow?
We just finished our six months break, so I think I’d take a year off if it all stopped tomorrow. I’d enjoy my life with my wife, my dog, and hopefully by that time, have a little family too. I’d like to stop and take a breath and think long and hard about what Westlife has achieved. Then I’d start all over and do something completely different like golf, because, lets face it, we’re never going to be as successful individually as we were with Westlife as a group. And I’ve always wanted to be the best, never mediocre. So I think I’d put that whole group thing aside and say that was then, and this is now.

Your last two albums have been predominantly covers, have you been stalling - when are you going to hit us with another original sure winner?
We have been very cover driven lately. But there are so many great old songs that are being remade, and that’s just where we are right now. As far as writing original stuff goes, Westlife has been lucky to have such success that we can’t afford to be mediocre anymore. We have to ensure that every track we come up with is a hit. There are lots of people out there willing us to fail, and even the media can be against you. But the fans, you can’t fool them.

In all your travels, which country do you think has the prettiest girls?
That’s a hard question! There are lots of pretty girls everywhere. But I think I’m going to have to go with Sweden. Yup, Sweden has the most pretty girls, I think.

Do you ever get sick of being called a boyband?
Not really. Our fan base isn’t just the young, though, anymore. We’ve won over a lot of the older fans with our cover tracks. The boyband stigma is always attached, but whether we’re a boyband, or boys in a band, it doesn’t bother us at all.

Tell us a bit about the upcoming asian tour?
Touring always is the best part of what we do. And as for our upcoming Asian tour, we have a couple of surprises in store. We’re going to get quite raunchy, so even if you’re not a Westlife fan, there’s something to enjoy!

it looks like malaysia’s not on your tour itinerary …
Really? Are you sure? That seems strange. I know we have a really big fan base there. We’ll speak to our agent and get that changed.

We’ll keep you to your word …
I’m sure we’ll be seeing you guys down in Malaysia soon!

Face to Face is currently available under Sony BMG, from all leading record store.

A quickie with Nicky

Best thing about being a westlife member?
Travelling the world.

I feel sexiest when …
I’m naked!

I’m happiest when …
I’m naked with my wife!

Pussycat dolls or hillary duff?
Pussycat Dolls, because there’s six of them.

Life is about ….
Enjoying it, not stressing, believing and living your dreams.

New Jodi Interview - 22 August 2006

When Brian McFadden left his wife, Kerry Katona, and found love with singer Delta Goodrem, Delta got a rough ride from Kerry’s fans.

But now the Aussie beauty has been given the seal of approval by the women who count – the wives and girlfriends of Brian’s old Westlife band mates, who have accepted Delta as one of their own.

Actress Jodi Albert, 23, girlfriend of Kian Egan, 26, reveals: “Brian’s very happy. We saw him recently as he was back in Ireland with Delta. She’s such a lovely girl. We got on really well and were chatting for ages.

“We have a lot in common – neither of us drink, but we like to boogie. I think she enjoyed hanging out with us girls.
“It’s such a shame she got so much stick because she doesn’t deserve it. She’s such a nice person and has been through so much.
“I didn’t really know Kerry, but I’m sure she misses the whole group thing. She seems happy though and has her kids.”

Jodi says that Delta is more than welcome as a Westlife Wag, or Wagabees as they call themselves. The girls first coined the name during the World Cup.
She says: “We were joking about how we can’t call ourselves Wags because there’s a boyfriend now – Mark’s man, Kevin. So we’re the Westlife Wagabees – the wives, girlfriends and boyfriends.
“We never drink as much as the Wags though – they know how to party!”

Now there’s a Westlife baby – Shane and Gillian’s daughter Nicole, one – things have become a lot more sedate. And the group are now even closer.

“We’re tighter as a unit because there’s a baby around,” says Jodi. “You have to be more responsible. Kian and I have babysat, but our puppy is enough responsibility for us right now.”
Jodi says she wants to settle down with Kian, but not just yet.

“We’re not engaged, but we talk about it all the time,” she says. “I’m only 23. I don’t want to be married until I’m 26 or 27.”

In the meantime, Jodi’s concentrating on her sexy role in new Five show Respectable. The ex-Hollyoaker plays a prostitute in the brothel-based comedy.

“I have to wear bras, suspenders, French knickers and basques,” she says. “They’re racy but quite classy.”
“The only trouble was, I spent so long in them at work – even eating my lunch in them – that I didn’t find them sexy any more!”

Take That Were A Huge Influence On All Of Us - 22 August 2006

WESTLIFE round off another stellar summer of open-air music at Newmarket Racecourse tomorrow (Friday, 18 August) night.

The Irish heart-throbs are the last in the Newmarket Nights series which has seen some of the biggest names in the music business packing out the racecourse, from Status Quo and Ronan Keating to Texas and McFly.

For Westlife, the concert is one of their last before they launch their new album.

"We've had an album out October or November time literally every year since we started," says the group's Mark Feehily. "When I think about that it's crazy really because so much work goes into making one album and then we're also touring.

"We've done it seven times, this is the eighth time and next year it will be the ninth time. It seems quite mad when you actually sit down and think about it but normally it doesn't come into your head, you are just focused on what's ahead of you."

The group are rarely out of the spotlight and despite constant rumours that they will be splitting up - fuelled first by a greatest hits album and then by the departure of Bryan McFadden - they have continued their exhausting, almost nonstop live schedule. But for Mark, time in the studio making music away from the cameras and the fans is something he treasures.

"I love being in the studio," he says. "Performing live is one thing but when you are in the studio you can hear every last little syllable of your voice.

"For me that's more enjoyable in a way because when you are on tour there's a lot of people screaming and there's lots of stuff in your ears whereas in the studio you can really focus a lot more on the vocals."

The band formed in 1998 in Sligo, west Ireland and were heavily influenced by their fellow countrymen Boyzone. But the bands the group grew up listening to which set them on the pop path were Backstreet Boys and Take That - the original boy-band standard setters. So when Gary Barlow and chums decided recently to reform Take That and go on tour, the Westlife boys were once again transformed into giddy pop fans.

"We all took a lot of inspiration from Take That," says Mark. "I was as excited as the next person when I heard they were reforming. I think everybody at the time was affected by the phenomenon. I was definitely a Take That fan.

"We used to watch videos of their live gigs so much and it really influenced us as a band.

"I really wanted to see them on their tour but it was a shame because we were on tour at the same time so we didn't get a chance."

ˇWestlife play Newmarket Nights tomorrow (Friday, 18 August). Tickets have sold out.

Westlife Goes On - 22 August 2006

By JOJO P. PANALIGAN

Nicky Byrne of famed boy band Westlife clarifies that recent developments in his group do not indicate an impending break up.

"As long as we still enjoy being in Westlife, we’ll hold on to it," says he during a recent phone interview. "Of course, we eventually will part ways but not for a long, long time."

Speculations about Westlife disbanding started circulating when ex-member Brian McFadden released a solo album and still-member Mark Feehilly came out of the closet around the time their latest album "Face To Face" under Sony BMG Music Entertainment was expected to hit shelves but did not.

"The only reason our new album took time to get released is because we wanted to make sure we have got the best materials that top the last CD," says Nicky. "Seven years in the business can be tiring so we have to make sure that songs we do now are ones we really enjoy. After all, we have to sing them night after night!"

He adds: "Besides, the longer an act stays the more important coming up with hit songs is so people do not lose interest."

The breakthrough song that told Westlife they have an album worth making is "You Raised Me Up," a remake. When asked if they got the idea of doing the song from hearing the version of Secret Garden or Josh Groban, Nicky avers.

"The song was proposed to us by our manager, Lou Walsh," says Nicky. "The song was written by an Irish guy and has been recorded at least a hundred times. That means that it’s as much as our song as it is Josh Groban’s or Secret Garden’s."

Another remake in "Face To Face" sees Westlife paired with a diva. "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" features legendary songstress Diana Ross.

In a previous album, Westlife had collaborated on a remake of "Against All Odds" with Mariah Carey.

"We both enjoyed working with them and though they both were diva-ish, it wasn’t something that got in the way of good working relationship. At the end of the day, even divas are normal people who like to talk about regular things like world affairs, family and music."

Nicky says that they got Diana involved when their manager Lou met her at a party. Lou opened the idea of Diana working with Westlife on a track to her which the former agreed to easily because her daughter is a fan of the group.

"We didn’t get to record together, though, as she was in Los Angeles while we were in London. We only got to meet her when we shot the video for the song," says Nicky.

Was Westlife worried when they heard that "American Idol" had also put out a version of the song?

"No. I, for one, didn’t even know that they did," he says.

As for other members striking out solo eventually, Nicky thinks the possibility is slim.

"The way I look at it, we have been extremely successful together and as history has proven several times, doing it solo after coming from such success does not ensure the same. If ever we decide to walk out of Westlife, we’ll make sure we do it with our heads held high and with no falling out among us," says Nicky.

He explains: "Brian left because he said it was time for him to move on. He was no longer connecting with the group and was, in his words, being complacent. It’s fine. We all are still very good friends and have remained in touch."

When he does leave Westlife, Nicky will pursue an acting career.

"I actually have taken up acting lessons in New York during our last vacation. It was fun letting myself out and making lots of good friends. Yeah, movies I’d like to do next," he says.

We asked Nicky to assess the evolution of Westlife and he puts it straightforwardly.

"Vocally, we have matured a lot especially after doing the Sinatra-tribute album, ‘Allow Us To Be Frank.’ I’d also like to think that the songs are of the same level; adhering to the same high standards. Considering that we don’t write our own songs, we have been extremely lucky to chance by good ones consistently."

What does he remember of Manila?

"Manila is crazy, if not a bit manic, that’s why we always enjoy being there. The fans at the airport, the energy fans give us during the shows….we always look forward to coming back," Nicky ends.

"Westlife Face to Face in Manila" happens on Sept. 4 at the Araneta Coliseum. Among their hit songs are "Fool Again," "Swear It Again," "Evergreen," "When You’re Looking Like That," "My Love," "Flying Without Wings," "If I Let You Go," "Queen Of My Heart," and "World Of Our Own ."

Kian’s Parachute Jump Verdict: ‘It’s Better Than Being On Stage’ - 16 August 2006

Westlife’s Kian Egan may be at ease at belting out the ballads in front of 15,000 screaming fans, however, the Sligo star certainly showed his nerves when he took part in a skydive from 15,000 feet last Wednesday.

By Maria Tracey

Both Kian and his girlfriend, former Hollyoaks actress, Jodi Albert took their parachutes and jumped at the Irish Parachute Club in Clonbullogue, Co Offaly to raise funds for the Strandhill Indonesian Relief Fund (SIRF).

The charity was set up by three Strandhill surfers, student Allan Mulrooney and brothers, Barry and David Mottershead, originally from Cape Town and who have been living in Strandhill for the past three years.

To date over €12,000 has been raised for the fund, which will help rebuild the Indonesian island of Java, following the devastation left behind after two recent natural disasters.

The surfing trio also joined Kian and Jodi on the parachute jump, which served as a platform to promote the charity on a national scale.

“I had been to Indonesia with the band and have seen at first hand the situation there, even before the devastation caused by the earthquake,” said Kian.

“I wanted to do something for the cause and when the parachute jump was mentioned, I thought, ‘excellent, let’s do it’.”

Speaking to The Sligo Champion, Kian added that the jump was a “fantastic feeling” and “even more exhilarating than being on stage”.

“I just wanted to go straight back up there,” he said.

Kian added that Jodi, who had not planned to participate in the skydive until that morning, felt that it was “one of the best things she had ever done in her life”.

Organiser Allan Mulrooney said that the Westlife star had come off the jump looking “wide eyed” and “10 times more ecstatic than when he comes off stage”.

“It was just a crazy experience and honestly the best thing I’ve ever done,” said the 20 year-old.

“When you think that 150 fans turned up and saw Kian signing autographs for almost two hours wearing the SIRF t-shirt along with the publicity from the press on it, it really got the charity’s name out there, which was great.”

Westlife members, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne all sponsored €1,000 each towards the jump, while Kian has also put a similar sum forward.

In addition, the Westlife star has supplied a personalised framed platinum award of their seven albums to date signed by all four Westlife members for the charity.

The disc, which was put on E Bay last week, has made Ł765 to date and will remain on the website until Sunday.

Coupled with the disc, the surfboard of world championship-winning Mark Richard donated by Matt Britton of Surfers Village, will also go up for auction. It is hoped that these events will help increase awareness of the plight in West Java, after the island was struck by a tsunami three weeks ago, just two months after an earthquake devastated the area. Barry, Allan and David will travel out to Java in next week to provide locals with the items they need to help rebuild their livelihoods.

More information on the charity is available at www.sirf.org.

The picturesque Irish town of Sligo will be transformed into a queer paradise this weekend, as part of the Pride Northwest festival.

Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transsexuals will be joined by heterosexual people marching under the banner ‘Straight But Not Narrow – Heterosexuals Supporting LGBT Rights.’

The parade will move through the town this Saturday. Organisers hope the event will become a draw for tourists, and say that the response from local officials and businesses has been very positive.

Other events in the three-day festival include a picnic on the beach and a social event with live music and a disco.

Sligo is famous as the home of three members of Westlife, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan.

Last August Feehily revealed to The Sun that he is gay. He is currently dating Kevin McDaid, a former member of boy band V. He still lives near Sligo.

The band’s name derives from the town’s position on the very edge of the northwest coast of Ireland.

Sligo Gets Its Very Own First Avenue - 16 August 2006

WESTLIFE star Shane Filan was on hand last Friday to unveil the name of Sligo’s newest street.

First Avenue is the name that has been selected for the street of shops created at Quayside Shopping Centre linking Wine Street with the entrance to the interior of the centre.

The naming of the street was one of a number of events held to mark the first anniversary of the opening of the shopping centre.

Shane also cut a special first birthday cake with the centre’s developers Seamus O’Dowd, Anthony Murray and Niall Townsend.

There was also the launch of a competition giving shoppers the chance to win a car.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere in the shopping centre during the day were cartoon characters giving out gifts to shoppers, as well as face painting and balloon modelling.

And over the weekend there was further street entertainment and various promotions by stores within the centre.

Westlife And Status Quo Concerts Mean No Parking At Pendennis - 15 August 2006

Falmouth locals will not be able to park at Pendennis Point because of two high-profile concerts taking place at Pendennis Castle, later this month.

Over 6000 fans are expected to descend on the normally-sleepy Cornish town on on 26 and 27 August for two sold-out concerts by Irish boy band Westlife and rock legends Status Quo.

Parking for motorists and residents will be banned on Pendennis Point for the duration of the bank holiday weekend, which has worried some local businesses.

But Police said the ban was needed for safety.

Emma Fox, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Having an extra 6,000 people on a bank holiday in Falmouth has the potential to cause major disruption.

“It can be very congested on the best of days at the point and extra cars trying to park in the vicinity is just unworkable.

“The restrictions are necessary for health and safety, and for park-and-ride schemes set up by concert organizers to function effectively.”

Run For Your (West) Lives! - 15 August 2006

EXCLUSIVE Are Louis Walsh's pop acts in constant danger, or are these stories just clever publicity stunts?

By Beth Neil

RAMPAGING rhinos, charging lions, freak tidal waves and death-defying stunts... It's all in a day's work for Irish boyband Westlife.

The pop quartet are no strangers to being in peril. Their latest terrifying encounter was with a two-ton rhinocerous while touring Knowsley Safari Park in Merseyside last weekend.

Only their quick-thinking guide saved the four - currently on a UK tour to promote their album Face To Face - from certain disaster...

They said: "We had to beat a hasty retreat. The rhino was sweltering in the heat and we got a bit too close."

That ordeal was the latest in a long line of near-fatal escapades for Shane, Kian, Mark and Nicky. Just last year, Kian escaped being eaten alive by a lion during another safari trip, this time in South Africa.

Bizarrely, Westlife are not the only acts looked after by music biz veteran Louis Walsh who have diced with death.

Boyzone, Girls Aloud, Samantha Mumba and flop girlband Bellefire have also suffered near-misses. And they always seem to happen when the stars in question have something to promote.

So are Louis Walsh's acts really lucky to be alive, or have we all (us included, from time to time) fallen for a series of outrageous publicity stunts? Take a look at the following evidence and decide...

Cheryl Tweedy targeted by jewel gang - July 2005

THE Girls Aloud beauty is forced into hiding after learning that a gang of thugs are hellbent on nicking her Ł50,000 engagement ring. Discovering that the robbers are tracking her movements she flees London and escapes to a European hideaway.

Cheryl says: "The whole thing has been pretty scary."

Promoting: New single Long Hot Summer.

Girls Aloud caught in crossfire - May 2005

THE band cower inside their rooms as armed police swarm over the exclusive Radisson SAS hotel in Liverpool during a gangland war. Gunshots allegedly ring out. The Girls say: "It was terrifying."

Promoting: British tour.

Shane Filan swept out to sea - May 2005

THE Westlife star almost drowns on holiday in Miami after being swept out to sea by a freak wave. He is rescued by a lifeguard at South Beach as his pregnant wife Gillian watches in horror.

Shane says: "I thought I was going to die. I'm lucky to be alive. It was one of those moments when your life flashes before your eyes."

Promoting: The single You Raise Me Up

Kian Egan chased by lion - April 2005

FELLOW Westlifer Kian is nearly savaged by a lion while on safari in Durban, South Africa, after he leaves his tour guide's vehicle. Kian says: "It was the most terrifying few seconds of my life and I have never run so fast."

Promoting: Tour of South Africa.

Mark Feehily could lose his sight - October 2004

MORE misery for Westlife when Mark is warned he could go blind due to the band's flashy lifestyle.

Mark is told by docs that he runs the risk of permanently damaging his peepers after excessive exposure to camera bulb-popping.

He says: "Photographers complain and ask why I sometimes wear sunglasses but I have no choice unless I want to ruin my eyesight for ever."

Promoting: Launch of album Allow Us To Be Frank.

Girlband stalked by pervert - August 2002

TWO ex-SAS men are drafted in to protect Bellefire from a sex beast while they perform at a UK holiday camp.

Their spokesperson says: "The girls were taken aback when they heard what had happened. Luckily they had people on stand-by because of their trouble with the stalker back in Dublin."

Promoting: Tour of England.

Kian Egan in death-stunt drama - April 2002

THE hapless Westlife singer is left hanging 50ft in the air and moments from plunging to his death when a stage stunt in Belfast goes wrong. He says: "It was the most terrifying ordeal of my life. I kept thinking, 'Oh God, this is the end!' I thought I was going to die."

Promoting: World Of Our Own tour.

Samantha Mumba shower stalker hell - June 2001

THE Irish singer flees screaming from her LA hotel room after a crazed fan sneaks into her shower. By the time security arrived the intruder had gone. She says: "It was a very scary ordeal."

Promoting: Her movie Time Machine.

Brian McFadden will go deaf if he flies again - June 2001

AN ear infection puts the Westlife singer's hearing in jeopardy. Brian is warned he could go deaf if he gets on another plane.

Promoting: Tour of Asia.

Girl band beauty in terror ride - May 2001

BELLEFIRE singer Tara Lee is trapped in a limousine with a crazed driver.

She is driven around New York for 30 minutes by the man, who was swearing to himself and threatening to kill an imaginary dog.

She says: "He suddenly sped off and went crazy. He kept shouting to himself, 'I'm going to kill that dog" stop barking at me. Everyone hates me.' I was hiding behind the passenger seat."

Promoting: Debut single Perfect Bliss.

Boyzone pair attacked by swarm of flies July 1999

SHANE Lynch and Keith Duffy are attacked by flies during a camping trip in Ireland. They are forced to flee their tent and seek refuge in a nearby hotel. They say: "It's not quite as dramatic as being ravaged by a lion in a jungle somewhere but it was a pretty hairy incident all the same."

Promoting: Preparing for release of Live By Request DVD.

Nothing Too Serious - 14 August 2006

BOTH bands can be described as musical megastars, but Shane Filan of Westlife says his group and fellow countrymen U2 are really "just typical Irish lads who love music and like a beer".

Filan, whose band has sold 40 million albums worldwide, says Irish musicians do not take themselves too seriously.

"I think that is why we get on so well with Australians, because you guys are the same,'' he says.

"Anyone being pretentious or big-headed is quickly brought down to earth.''

He says he admires the way U2 was still "so grounded'', despite the band's success.

"I was out at a bar in Dublin recently having a few pints and Bono and his mates arrived and he was quick to come over and say hello,'' Filan says.

"He is so laidback, despite the fact that those guys have been mega successful and now are very, very rich.

"Larry, U2's drummer, contacted us and asked for our autographs because his girlfriend is a big fan of ours. We could not believe that, because we are such great fans of theirs.''

Renowned for big ballads and sweet soul harmonies, Westlife was formed in Dublin in 1998.

Despite little radio support in Australia, the band has a huge following here and its album Face To Face is nearing double platinum status, thanks in part to an appearance on Dancing With the Stars earlier this year on a packed promotional trip.

"I am really happy to have broken through in Australia at last,'' Filan says.

"My brother is a doctor in Melbourne, so I feel like I have a connection with the place.''

The singer, who wants it known the Socceroos were "robbed'' at the World Cup, says he and his bandmates have just started work on a new album.

"We always release an album a year. We just love what we do,'' he says.

"I am proud of what we have achieved along the way.

"Having said that, it could all end tomorrow, so you have to work hard while you can.''

During their career the members of Westlife have met the stars of stage and screen, but one particular meeting still stands out for them.

"We got to meet the late Pope, the one before this new guy, and that was just an amazing experience for a Roman Catholic boy in Ireland,'' he says.

"My mum was so proud of me, more so than for most other things we have achieved.''

Despite conquering markets throughout the world, Filan admits his act still struggles to gain a significant following in the US.

"I think a lot of it has to do with politics in the American music scene,'' he says.

"They love promoting their own acts and artists from out-of-the-way places like Ireland and Australia have to face extra hurdles to crack it there. That makes the success of U2 there even more admirable.

"Look at Robbie Williams, he is a massive performer everywhere except the US -- it does not seem to worry him though and it really doesn't bother us.

"We are proud of our music and what we do and that is all that matters, really.''

Filan regards his bandmates as survivors after coping with the sudden departure of Bryan McFadden, who left Westlife to pursue a solo career and is now dating Australian singer Delta Goodrem.

They also feared that many young female fans might abandon them after member Mark Feehily declared he was gay.

Yet Westlife continues to enjoy huge sales and sold-out concerts.

A feature of any of the band's performances is the number of cover songs. The current tour has included versions of songs by Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Justin Timberlake, Robert Palmer and The Pussycat Dolls.

"Look, a great song is a great song no matter who wrote it,'' Filan says. "We really just love to sing those kinds of songs.''

While the singer admits he has contemplated a solo album, he says he would hate to leave Westlife.

"I don't think it would be as much fun doing it on your own,'' he says.

"We are now a real gang and have shared some great times together, plus we love each other's company and honestly, I know I keep saying it, but we really just love to sing together.''

Apart from their own recordings, the Westlife lads have developed a reputation for working in tandem with some of the great female vocalists. Past collaborations include sessions with Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Lulu.

Filan predicts big things for one particular female vocalist.

"I think Delta Goodrem is set to become one of the world's major recording artists,'' he says.

"We had never met and talked until recently. We all went out and had a few drinks together for Bryan's birthday.

"She is gorgeous and a really nice person as well.

"I have had a chance to listen to some of her new material and she is hot.

"I think she is a much better singer than Mariah Carey, for example, and we have worked with her.''

Boyband To Get Off Their Butts - 14 August 2006

By Juliana June Rasul

Has Westlife really been around for eight years? You bet.

While the average boyband has a lifespan of about five years, these unlikely contenders for pop chart longevity have survived the loss of a member and their shunning of slickly choreographed moves to become the only survivor of the boyband crop of the late '90s.

"It is quite long for a band like Westlife to be doing what we do," said member Kian Egan in a phone interview with Today from his home in Sligo, Ireland.

The former quintet — now a foursome made up of Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne — will hold their third concert here next month at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Westlife have seven albums to their name, 14 No 1 singles in the United Kingdom alone and have collaborated with the likes of Donny Osmond, Donna Summer and Mariah Carey.

"I never imagined we'd be together so long, you know?" said Egan, 26. "I thought we'd get three or four years out of it and then I'd just travel the world and surf."

He speculated that the reason Westlife are still around is that, in other "male vocal groups" (read: boybands), "one guy always thinks it's all about him and wants to go solo".

Like Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake and, well, former Westlifer Bryan McFadden?

"The thing with Bryan was that the band didn't want to break up, so we made sure to just go ahead and keep on recording and touring," Egan said.

McFadden's decision to leave the group, he noted, was a professional choice and had nothing to do with any dissension in the ranks.

"He was a very important part of the band so, of course, it was something we didn't want to happen," he said. "But we still hang out, so it's all right."

Besides losing a member, Westlife also gracefully rode out a potential scandal last year when Feehily announced he was in a relationship with fellow boyband member Kevin McDaid of V.

Egan declined to talk about Feehily's relationship, though he did say it is a lively bunch of family and friends that join them on tour these days.

"There's Mark's boyfriend, the wives and girlfriends, so it's really fun," he said. "We're definitely more family-oriented now, not party-oriented."

Byrne is married to the daughter of the current Prime Minister of Ireland, Bertie Ahern, while Filan is married to childhood sweetheart Gillian Walsh.

For their third world tour, which kicked off in February in Europe, Egan promises an "energetic, powerful concert" that won't involve them merely sitting on stools, a habit they were so fond of that their first world tour in 2001 was unofficially nicknamed "The No Stools Tour". "Everybody who loves pop music will love the concert," said Egan.
And how long does he think the group will stay together?

"We enjoy it so much, and the fans enjoy it so much, and we love the lifestyle of course," he said, laughing. "I don't think we're going to stop anytime soon."

Fireworks At Faenol - 14 August 2006

The Chronicle

Opening this year's Faenol Festival will be the superstar Irish band Westlife - who also happen to be playing at Chester Racecourse next weekend.

This band burst on the UK mainstream music scene seven years ago - at about the same time as the Faenol Festival was launched.

They have dominated the UK pop scene ever since and the success of their latest album Face to Face shows that they're still at the top of their game.

The new album features all the hallmarks of that reign - a collection of classic songs and future standards. In brief, Face To Face finds Westlife doing what they've always done best. Also appearing at the Faenol Festival, near Bangor, this year will be Bryn Terfel and special guests (Saturday, August 26), Shirley Bassey (Sunday, August 27), and Tan y Ddraig (Monday, August 28).

Joining Bryn Terfel on stage at this year's opera gala will be soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Rolando Villazón.

Since her international debut at Covent Garden in 1992, Gheorghiu's magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have established her as a unique international talent.

Mexican-born Villazón, fresh from debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Covent Garden has been hailed as the new tenor superstar and judging by the success of his first solo recording and current critical acclaim, this may well be an understatement.

* Westlife kick off the Faenol Festival on Friday, August 25, with gates opening at 5.30pm and the show starting at 8pm. Each evening culminates in a firework display.

Tickets for the opening night are Ł36 seated, Ł28 grass.

A 10% discount is available for bookings of 10 or more and a weekend festival promenade ticket is available for just Ł80 (plus booking fee). Tickets from North Wales Theatre 01492 872000, Theatr Gwynedd 01248 351708.

* Meanwhile, don't forget to book tickets to see Westlife and Van Morrison at Chester Racecourse next weekend by ringing 0870 145 1100.

Love Was In The Air As Kian And Jodi Jumped - 14 August 2006

WESTLIFE singer Kian Egan and girlfriend Jodi Albert pledged their love for each other before their charity parachute jump last week.

And model Jodie, who had tried to talk her popstar boyfriend out of the daredevil stunt, ended up jumping first.

"I shouted to her 'I love you, babe' and she looked back at me and said 'I love you too, babe' and that was it - she was gone," said Kian.

In his first full interview about the jump in Co Offaly, Kian said that, even as they were driving to the airfield near Edenderry, Co Offaly, Jodi was adamant she wouldn't join him in the flight without wings.

"But Jodi is a spontaneous type of person and when we got to the place and she saw all the experts there, people who knew exactly what they were doing,

she said 'OK, why not?' and she went up in the plane with me," he told Ocean FM.

The jump, also done by three friends who surf with Kian near his home in Strandhill, Co Sligo, was to raise funds for earthquake and tsunami victims on the Indonesian island of Java.

Flying Without Wings - 14 August 2006

WESTLIFE'S Kian Egan and his actress girlfriend Jodi Albert proved that not all celebs favour first-class air travel yesterday.

The brave pair performed a 15,000ft charity jump at The Irish Parachute Centre, in Clonbulloge, Co Offaly.

It was the first time for both stars, who managed to raise more than €11,000 for victims of the Indonesian earthquake.

Jodi was first to take the plunge with her instructor, quickly followed by Kian.

The picture shows Kian and Jodi after the jump.

FLYING WITHOUT WINGS - 14 August 2006

LOOK who's Flying Without Wings...it's WESTLIFE star KIAN EGAN.

The singer has been a high-flyer in the charts so many times that I'm sure this parachute jump was a breeze.

He was raising cash for the Indonesian Earthquake Fund and managed to get over Ł7,000. Kian was joined by his gorgeous fiancée, ex-Hollyoaks actress JODI ALBERT.

He told me: "Jumping out of the plane had me sweating but it's an amazing rush."

Westlife? More like Zestlife.

Thanx Angela for typing this up J

IN the words of one of the band's biggest hits, Westlife’s Kian Egan and actress girlfriend Jodi Albert have been flying without wings for charity.

The celebrity couple did a parachute jump in Kian's native Ireland in aid of Indonesian earthquake victims.

The singer & ex-Hollyoaks babe Jodi jumped out of a plane at 15,000 ft in County Offaly.

And to get them in the mood, staff at the Irish parachute centre played the song as they did their final training.

No-one Tells Us What To Do (Mark Interview) - 3 August 2006

MOST people assume being in a boyband means being told what to do by record company execs while looking pretty for the fans.

And while Westlife's Mark Feehily admits some people tried to take them for a ride during their early days, he says after several years in the business they are firmly in the driving seat.

"I'm 26 now, I've been doing this job for eight years and no-one tells us what to do," he insists.

"Nobody would try to tell us what to do, but it's sensible for us to work with our label and our management and make sure we see eye to eye.

"We don't get told what to do, but we certainly do respect and listen to the record company's opinion. It's in our interests to work with them instead of getting stroppy and constantly challenging what they say."

During the early days the boys were just teenagers. They emerged from their roots in Sligo, northwest Ireland in 1998 and landed a support slot with their heroes Backstreet Boys at a concert in Dublin. They went on to win the best newcomer act at the Smash HitsPoll Winners Party later that same year and were soon on their way towards an unprecedented run of 13 number one singles.

"I've learned so much about the music business, but there's still so much more to learn," says Mark. "I came from secondary school straight into record contracts and lawyers and business deals talking about thousands of pounds; it was a very scary thing for me at the time. So one thing I've learned is to control myself and calmly make decisions about money and other important things.

"We've certainly had people in the past who took advantage of our naiveté and the fact we didn't really have a clue, but on the other hand we were very lucky we had people close to us who were very protective.

"But although we were 18 or 19-year-olds we weren't brought up to be walked all over and we dealt with it, basically by firing anyone near us who was trying to."

The one question Mark always dreaded from journalists was: "So where's your girlfriend then?"

It was inevitable for a singer in a band like Westlife, who are loved by thousands of screaming female fans across Ireland and the UK.

But he dreaded what would happen if his secret relationship with another man got out.

While the rest of the group were courting glamorous girls - Kian is dating former Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert and Nicky is married to Irish PM Bertie Ahern's daughter Georgina - Mark had found love with Kevin McDaid, a singer in another boy band, V.

In August last year he decided to come out in an article in The Sun. The reaction he got gave him renewed faith in the band's fanbase.

"I got so many letters off fans and also people weren't necessarily Westlife fans, but had been touched in some way by what I did in coming out," he says. "I really haven't had one negative comment and I can say that with my hand on my heart. I think it speaks volumes about the progression in modern society - it really doesn't affect anybody. Our fans aren't like pop fans from the past; they don't want to marry us. It's not like a few years ago, when fans didn't see the reality of a pop act.

"At the moment we are all in long-term relationships and it hasn't affected anything.

It was no big deal. It might have been a bigger deal a few years ago, but people just literally said: 'So what?'" The story did nothing to dent the band's sales and their album Face to Facelater that year duly hit the top spot in the charts.

But, as well as the public reaction to his decision to come out, Mark says it has also made a great difference to him personally.

"It's a relief to be able to talk about it. It's just something off my shoulders," he says. "I never spoke too much about my private life and I still don't intend to, but it's definitely a relief I don't have to fend off questions any more about where my girlfriend is. I can just ignore those questions now, I can stand up and be proud and say, 'Actually I'm going out with a fella'.

"It's been nothing but positive in terms of the reaction I've had and the effect it's had on my life."

Mark had become used to seeing his face in the newspapers since the band first broke out of Ireland in 1998 and become Europe's biggest boyband.

Much of the media speculation recently has centred around rumours of the band splitting.

Since they released a Greatest Hitsalbum in 2002 and Bryan McFadden parted company with them in 2004 Westlife have been dogged by reports that they quitting the music industry.

"I think the nation's hearts have been broken twice before by two of the biggest pop acts the UK has ever had, Take That and the Spice Girls," explains Mark. "And I think, understandably, people feel bands are just going to go for a while and then split up. They have maybe lost an element of trust in the fact a band can actually be happy and want to continue together.

"Robbie left, Geri left and it all kind of went down hill for Take That and the Spice Girls, so of course when Bryan left our band they just assumed we were going to go down the exact same route. But personally I think we have got stronger since he left."

At first the rumours were hurtful to the band members, especially since their fanbase showed no signs of abating. But they soon learned to deal with it and now it's a regular joke between the members whenever they get together. In a way, says Mark, it's a compliment because it shows they are defying people's expectations.

"We are always going to get asked the question because once we got past the greatest hits album we are in uncharted territory for a boyband, so everybody is always wondering when we are going to split up. We could tell people we were going to split up in five years and they would still ask us every day of that five- year period if we were splitting up. It's just something we've learned to deal with.

"When people first started saying it, it freaked us out because we were thinking, 'Seriously, why are you saying that? Where are you getting this information from?' We thought the press must know what they're talking about, maybe they're right but we're the ones who decide if we're going to split up so no matter how many people suggest we might be, at the end of the day it's up to us."

Westlife are at Audley End on Sunday. To book tickets visit the website at www.picnicconcerts.com

Face To Face With Westlife - 3 August 2006

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo

Something very amusing happened the last time I saw Westlife at a press junket in Singapore a few years ago. During the TV interviews, a sexy TV host got so carried away that when she heard Uptown Girl (the quartet’s own version) being played in the background, she promptly rose from her seat and launched into a "belly dance," much to the pleasant surprise of Mark, Kian, Nicky and Shane who very politely "applauded" the enthusiastic "uptown girl" but couldn’t conceal their amusement even during the interview portion.

It’s a pity that Miss Uptown Girl has left for a faraway place and she won’t be around to do an "encore" when the Westlife guys breeze back into Manila for a concert called Face to Face at the Araneta Coliseum on Sept. 4.

Face to Face
is also the title of the quartet’s new album (released locally by Sony BMG Records), their first in three years since their Turnaround album topped the charts in 2003. Described as "a familiar blend of big ballads and mid-tempo tunes, balanced by the occasional up-tempo song," Face to Face presents Westlife playing to their strengths – passionate vocals and memorable tunes – a straightforward formula that’s been winning hearts and ears since the quartet burst onto the UK music scene and dominated it for more than seven years.

"I think this album shows that Westlife is back in a big way," Shane Filan was quoted as saying. "It’s got the best material we’ve ever released."

"At the time," added Nicky Byrne, "Turnaround seemed like one of our best albums. This one feels even better."

The two other members, Kian Egan and Mark Feehilly, agreed.

Over the weekend, Funfare did an exclusive phone interview with Kian, speaking for the rest of the Westlife. Here are excerpts:

You’ve been in Manila before. What are your memories from those visits?

"I remember when we were in Manila, everybody was very nice and very friendly. You have a beautiful country. Everybody there was so nice that I really looked forward to going back there to see everybody again."

You still remember when you were in Manila the last time?

"Oh, that was a long time ago. We wanted to go around but we didn’t have the time. This time, I hope we could."

What can we expect from Westlife during your concert at the Araneta Coliseum?

"You will hear a lot of the songs from our new album, Face to Face, and we’ll also do a lot of songs from our old albums, and all the big hits, including Uptown Girl, World of Our Own, Against All Odds and many more."

Why did you call your new album Face to Face?

"Because we’re back face to face with our fans after an absence of a few years."

How does Face to Face differ from your last album?

"This album has great pops song in it. We made sure that we included songs that our fans will love to listen to."

How did the Westlife sound evolve through the years?

"We’ve become a bit older and we are more mature-sounding. We sound quite different from the way we did a few years ago. But the distinct Westlife sound remains the same as you will notice in Face to Face."

What about in your personal lives?

"Well, Shane recently became a father for the first time; he has a daughter. Someday, I want to be a father, too. Nicky spent much of his summer getting in shape in the gym. Mark has a lovely apartment in London and he’s enjoying life a lot. Me, I like to play golf and play with my dog."

Many people thought that the Westlife had disbanded.

"No, it’s not true. As you can see, we’re still together... still making beautiful music together."

That should make Westlife fans happy and rest assured that their idols will be together for a long time. They are, as the title of one of their hits puts it, "unbreakable."

Now, after Stephen Gately of Boyzone "outed" himself a few years and Lance Bass of ’N Sync confessed that he, too, is gay very recently, will any of the Westlife guys spring a surprise of his own anytime soon?

Meanwhile, here are interesting trivia about the quartet:

KIAN, 26, Taurus – "I’m like a bull. I never thought that Westlife would have 12 No. 1 singles. My favorite Westlife moment was shooting the video for If I Let You Go in Tenerife. My favorite Westlife track is What Makes a Man. My favorite Westlife video is Fool Again. What do the other guys say about me? That I am headstrong! When I’m not working, I like to spend time in the surf dude. My motto is: Treat people how you like to be treated."

SHANE, 27, Cancer – "I never thought that Westlife would still be hugely successful seven years on. My favorite Westlife moment is meeting the Pope. My favorite Westlife track is Flying Without Wings. My favorite Westlife video is Fool Again. What do the other guys say about me? That I am generous and a nice guy! When I’m not working I like to change my daughter’s nappies. My motto is: Everything happens for a reason."

NICKY, 28, Libra – "I am a beautifully balanced person. I never thought that Westlife would play two nights at Lansdowne Road to 80,000, My favorite Westlife moment was meeting the Pope. My favorite Westlife track is World of Our Own. My favorite Westlife video is World of Our Own (US version). What do the other guys say about me? I spend the longest time in the shower! When I’m not working I like to spend time with my wife and walk our little pups. My motto is: Smile, enjoy life, live every day like it’s your last."

MARK, 26, Gemini – "I never thought that Westlife would win Record of the Year three times. My favorite Westlife moment was meeting the Pope. My favorite Westlife track is Can’t Lose What You Never Had. My favorite Westlife video is World of Our Own (US version). What do the other guys say about me? Yes, where is Mark?

When I’m not working, I like to write songs. My motto is: Wake up and breathe!"

(Note: Westlife Face to Face in Manila is produced by Viva Concerts & Events. On 15th July the Westlife lads before they played at Blicking Hall in Norfolk they where playing at a private wedding which Claire’s friend was invited to!

Apparently on the invite it said entertainment provided and then they got there and the lads were on stage for 50 minutes and they told the bride and groom that they enjoyed it that much that if they didn't have to go to Blickling Hall they would have stayed!

Shane told the bride and groom that when they heard they were booked for a private wedding they were like 'oh no a private wedding the people are going to be so stuck up' and Shane told the bride and groom that they are the nicest people he's met and that Gillian would love them so he's given the bride and groom two tickets to a Westlife gig and then after the gig the bride and groom have been invited back to Shane’s house to have a meal with Shane and Gillian!

'Don't Go Flying Without Wings Kian!' - 1 August 2006

BEAUTY JODI'S SKYDIVE FEARS.

Byline: By PADDY CLANCY

WESTLIFE star Kian Egan's terrified girlfriend Jodi Albert has begged him not to do a skydive.

The star signed for the charity jump in Co Offaly on Wednesday but now Hollyoaks star joined Kian's mum in trying to talk him out of it.

Kian, 26, revealed: "When I told her I was definitely doing it this week she wasn't happy about it.

"She wanted to know what would I do if something went wrong.

"She agreed I was doing it for a good enough reason - to help earthquake victims in Java - and she told me to make sure I got enough money for them." The Flying Without Wings star also revealed his mum Patricia failed to talk him out of it.

"She gave me an earful," he said. "She only found out when she read the local paper. I told her even if I wanted to there was no way I could pull out now.''

Kian and three surfing mates will each be strapped to an experienced skydiver when they leap from a plane and freefall for almost 10,000 ft. They will reach speeds of 180 km/h before the parachutes are opened to slow down for the final 5,000 feet.

The dive, for which Kian hasn't yet started his training, comes down near Edenderry.

He said: ''It will be the first plane I've ever taken off in that I won't land in.

"That idea quite nervewracking. I want to know as little as possible about it until I'm in the air and the door opens and I get pushed out.'' Kian is likely to be strapped to top sky-diver Roger Killeen, a veteran of 5,000 jumps in 14 years.

Roger laughed: ''All he has to do is smile, have fun and don't get sick."

The dive is in aid of the Strandhill Indonesian Relief Fund (SIRF) set up by Kian's surfer pals Allan Mulrooney and brothers Barry and David Mottershead.

They were in Java on holiday last year and were moved by TV pictures of the earthquake there in May.

Over a couple of pints they decided to help.

Kian's three Westlife colleagues, Mark, Shane and Nicky are sponsoring his jump.

Kian said: "Nicky was for doing it but when I told him I could actually arrange it he backed out.''

You've already toured with Westlife. Pretty cool for a 14 year old. What were they like?

'They're all really nice, kinda laid back. I mean, when they come their girlfriends, kids and wives are there as well so they all hang out in the garden. They're all really nice.'

Were you a fan of them before this happened?

'Yeah, I did used to be one when I was younger. I mean, like, when I was about 10, when I loved them and I used to stick them on my wall. But you meet them and it's, like, oh my God.'
