The Love Album - Best Selling Album Of 2006 In Ireland! - 31 December 2006

Chart Track Commentary
Westlife take a sixth consecutive week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘The Love Album’ and in the process they beat Snow Patrol’s ‘Eyes Open’ in the battle for the year’s best-selling album, overtaking them on the final stretch around lunchtime last Friday.

This is the first time Westlife have ever had the best-seller of the year: their previous highest ranking in the year-end listings was No3 which they achieved for three of their earlier albums: ‘Westlife’ (1999), ‘World Of Our Own’ (2001) and ‘Face To Face’ (2005).

Westlife Star Nicky's Xmas - 23 December 2006

© Thanx Jane for typing it up

It's been another great year for Irish Boyband Westlife. Singer Nicky Byrne reckons it's going to be a good Christmas too.

So are you a fan of Christmas?
"I really love it. I wish that it could happen more than once a year. I felt like that as a kid and I don't think that’s ever going to change. It's the one time of year we always make sure we get off."

What do you want for Christmas this year?
"To be honest there's not much I want or need. My family say it's always a nightmare buying for me. I know it may sound cheesy but it's just enough for me to be with my family."

What is the best Christmas you've had?
"That would be in 2002. My wife and I got engaged on Christmas morning, we had just moved into a new house and had a new dog. That was a great year."

What is the worst present you've ever had?
"It seems when you get older that more and more people buy you socks. I guess they're useful but they're not the most exciting presents in the world."

Do you rate yourself as a present buyer?
"I really try to put a bit of thought into it when I buy people presents. I'm lucky that I have the money to be able to spoil, and that's great."

What's the secret to a good Christmas day?
"I like to go for a few pints on Christmas eve with my old mates from back home. That's a tradition we've had now for years. We do not drink as much as we used to because several of us have kids but it's still good fun."

Who is your tip for Christmas number one?
"Well it looks certain to be Leona and good on her. She's got an amazing voice and I hope it's the first of many for her. We've only had one Christmas number one single and it's an amazing feeling. We're in with a chance of getting the number one album. We've never done that before so that would be a brilliant end of the year."

So does Westlife star Nicky Byrne have any New year's resolutions?
"I never see the point in making those because I can never manage to keep them. I don't smoke or anything like that so there's nothing I really need to give up. Perhaps I could drink a little less, but you've got to have some vices in your life. I might try to eat healthier, but it will be pretty hard to quit those fry-ups."

By ALISON MALONEY

POP legends have been brought back to life to sing with their modern day counterparts for the Christmas Eve special, Duet Impossible.

The show, presented by Vernon Kaye, will see Dusty Springfield join the Sugababes and Roy Orbison crooning with Westlife.

Other collaborations, made possible with modern technology, include Lulu and Marvin Gaye, and Peggy Lee singing Fever with Simon Webbe.

Boy George is reunited with himself - from 23 years ago - for Karma Chameleon, and Katie Melua sings an emotional version of Somewhere over the Rainbow with Eva Cassidy.

Tragic Eva, who died of cancer when she was just 33, was not famous until after her death and mum Barbara is thrilled that Katie will be carrying on her legacy.

“We discovered what a beautiful and talented young singer Katie Melua is and we’re so pleased that she has been inspired by Eva,” said Barbara Cassidy. “I think it’s going to be a wonderful duet together.”

DUET Impossible is screened on BBC1 on Christmas Eve at 5.45pm.

Snow Patrol Album To Be 2006 Best-Seller? - 22 December 2006

Snow Patrol's album Eyes Open could be the biggest-selling album of 2006, according to HMV.

Based on sales to date, Scissor Sisters's Ta Dah is in second place while Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by The Artic Monkeys is in third spot.

Albums by Razorlight, The Kooks, Take That, Oasis, Westlife, James Morrison and Pink complete the top 10.

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo comments: "Looking back, it's been a bit of a golden year for British music. Prompted by the amazing success of the likes the Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight, indie, rock and pop continued to dominate the music landscape.

"The best kept secret of the year, however, was Snow Patrol, whose acclaimed album Eyes Open will have notched up the best part of 1.5m sales. The Kooks, too, had a remarkable year, seemingly coming from nowhere to enjoy a million-selling album.

"It was also a year of new artists coming to the public's attention through the power of the internet - Lily Allen, Sandi Thom, Paolo Nutini, James Morrison and, of course, the Arctic Monkeys, were pretty much unknown, but through chat rooms and social network sites such as My Space they burst onto the music scene to enjoy immediate and unprecedented No 1 success."

4,000 Euro Raised For Blaithnead Foley Memorial Trust - 22 December 2006

Almost four thousand euro was raised yesterday on the streets of Sligo for the local Blathnaid Foley Memorial Cancer Trust.

The collections were made among the public during a live four-hour broadcast by Ocean FM on O'Connell Street.

Those who participated included Westlife's Mark Feehily, Tabby Callaghan, Sligo Concert Band, the Sligo Orpheus Choir, Gael Scoil Cnoc na Ri, and the Coolera Dramatic Society.

The money raised will now be used to help research into Ewings Sacoma, a rare form of cancer from which 12 year old Blaithnaid died earlier this year.

Ocean FM's Margaret Carr Flynn, who organised yesterday's broadcast, says she's delighted with the amount of money raised.

Another Hit For Westlife Star As Property Empire Expands - 21 December 2006

THE property development company owned by Westlife star Shane Filan and his brother, Finbarr, is hoping to expand its portfolio with the proposed construction of 63 luxury apartments at the rear of Lisroyan House, Knappagh Road, Sligo.

Shafin Developments Ltd will lodge a planning application this week with Sligo Borough Council for the development, consisting of 4, 227 square metres gross floor area.

"It is close to the centre of town and the whole idea is that it would blend into the area," said Shane, who added that "everything would be within walking distance."

Although set within a prime city centre site, the development will also have the privacy and mature landscaping of a rural setting.

It will be located within the extended curtilage of Lysroyan House, the original orchard gardens that are located to the north of the building, off Knappagh Road. Lisroyan House, a protected structure, is not within the site and no works are proposed to it.

The proposed development, in two blocks, is arranged loosely in an L Shape, with an open landscaped area to the south.

Block A is mainly of two to three storeys with a small four-storey element. It will incorporate 42 apartments, including two 1-bedroom, 36 two-bedroom and four 3-bedroom apartments.

Block B is of three to four storeys, incorporating 21 two-bedroom apartments.

There is to be a new vehicular entrance off Orchard Road by way of a short existing cul de sac adjoining an existing apartment block, Thornhill House.

A basement level of car parking extends under parts of blocks A and B and under part of the proposed landscaped area. A total of 120 car parking spaces are to be provided, including five surface car parking spaces and 115 at basement level.

The architects have integrated the underground car parking into the contoured site, maximizing the area of green open space, according to project architect Declan McCabe, of architects Vincent Hannon & Associates, Abbey Street, Sligo.

The development will also include internal road network, landscaping, boundary treatment, foul and surface water sewerage and water supply services, bicycle parking, open space and all associated works and services.

This is Shafin Development’s third major project; last month it revealed plans for a €30m neighbourhood centre at Tonafortes, Carraroe. It also has a housing development, Stonebridge, in Dromahair.

"This rounds off an excellent year for us," said Shane, adding that they had lodged planning for the neighborhood centre in Carraroe, they had 40 new homeowners in Dromahair, and were currently looking at other exciting sites, having recently completed the purchase of another commercial site in Dromahair.

All in all, it seems Shane and Finbarr are on their way to creating their "World of Our Own", to take the title of just one of Westlife’s many hit songs.

Thanks To Westlife - 19 December 2006

From Sligo Weekender

I am from England and in 2000 I worked at Wembley with Westlife backstage at their dressing rooms. I was a short little chubby girl but they were very nice to me. They were polite and good guys. I am not a freaky fan, I am a woman of 31 and I just wanted to let the guys know I thank them so much for being so kind to me and it meant a lot.

Last year my mum died of lung cancer at 50 and the song The Rose makes me think of her in a happy way. They are wonderfull young men and deserve a lot of happiness. I just never got to thank them forbeing so kind. I hope to see them at Wembley next year, (not working).

I really liked Mark and Shane and wish them every happiness. Thank you’, I hope you will print this for me,

Nicky Tells How Becoming A Dad To Twins Is Like A Dream Come True

WESTLIFE star Nicky Byrne yesterday reflected on becoming a dad to twins, and joked: "I just hope I don't lose my snooker room."

Pop idol Nicky and his wife, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's eldest daughter, Georgina, are getting set to revamp their exclusive home in Malahide, Dublin, for the arrival of twins, due next June.

The excited couple told the Sunday World that they intend to wait until the births to find out the sex of their first born children.

"We both decided that we are going to leave that to the day. It's going to be such a surprise," Nicky revealed in an exclusive interview.

When they were initially told that Georgina was pregnant they had asked her best-selling author sister, Cecelia, and Nicky's younger brother, Adam, to be godparents.

Godparents

"Now we have to think about another set of godparents and more names, which is great," he says.

The clean-cut entertainer is bubbling with excitement at the latest news, which he revealed earlier this week.

"We've known for a few weeks and it's been hard not to let it out. We just wanted to take it all in ourselves before we said anything," Nicky revealed.

"We found out when Georgina went in for the first scan. Some of our friends had told us what to expect, but nothing prepares you; when you're in there and the doctor shows you Baby Byrne and Baby Byrne Two, and the healthy hearts beating.

"It brings a tear to your eye. Even now I'm getting emotional thinking about it.

"It's just the most fantastic thing that could have happened to us.

"I've had the most amazing year in Westlife and this just tops it completely. This is just every Christmas come at once for us."

It's been a long-held ambition of Nicky that his children would see him perform during the heyday of his pop career with Westlife.

"That's the one thing I've wanted all along," he reveals. "No matter how young they were, once they saw it I was going to be happy.

"There's never a guarantee how long you'll last in the music business but Westlife is flying at the moment. We are now negotiating a new contract with our record label that could give us another five or six years.

"That at least guarantees that they'll see me at some point.

"They might be too young to remember but at least they'll have seen it.

"I might be able to get an opportunity to bring them on stage with me in the summer of 2008, if we are lucky enough to be touring then.

"That's what Brian did with his kids when he was in the group and Shane did it with Nicole's birthday at one of the gigs in England. Just things like that I'm really looking forward to."

Amid the joy of being pregnant, Nicky reveals that Georgina has been coping with extreme nausea and sickness.

"For the first four to six weeks literally every day was bad," he says. "She's getting a lot better now. She's having days where she's more free from it.

"Georgina is big into physical fitness and I'm trying to keep her off the treadmill. But being a fitness instructor, she knows herself what to do.

"You get a lot of people coming to you in that business and she knows first hand what she should or should not be doing."

Meet & Greet Report:

On Monday morning they were announcing who had won the meet and greet… I was looking around the site the entire morning at work. When suddenly this box pops up on my screen from my gmail saying like winner meet & greet with Westlife and then the first sentence was take a deep breath… I felt my heart speeding up, my face flushing and I just didn’t dare to open my mail. I was terrified that it might be a joke or that I was dreaming… I finally got the courage to open my gmail account and I read the next line… Let it all sink... and after that was the line you are one of the two winners for the Westlife meet and greet. I was at work so I couldn’t really scream, but my heart started pounding faster and faster, I was radiating heat and as if it couldn’t get any worse I started shaking... I wanted to bounce of the walls but well my boss was sitting about six feet from me. So I took a deep breath and read the mail again... They needed my name and date of birth so I send it back… The next mail I got told me that I would get more information later…

The next day I got another mail stating the time and place to be... quarter past one at the Byenkorf in Amsterdam. At that point I was a bit numb going on with my daily things at work and at home. Not really believing it to be honest. At night I was working on the gift I would be giving the lads. The idea was to make a portrait for all of them in black and white. Nicky’s was horrible, but I didn’t have time to make a new one so he just had to be happy with it.

Finally it was the day that I would be meeting them. Taking a quick shower and spending half an hour on my hair… Gift-wrapping the presents, writing the Christmas cards… I was ready. I drove to the train station and boarded the train. I only had two minutes to catch my other train in Eindhoven… I made it and I was on my way to Amsterdam… two hours later from the time I left I stepped out of the train. Now I had to wait for a friend. It didn’t take me long. I told her that Nicky was having twins and she wouldn’t believe me at first… I did say it rather casually.

We set off to do some shopping. We had to find something for Nicky and the twins. In the end we decided to stick with the fluffy wooden shoes we had given Shane in April for Nicole… We quickly grabbed some markers as well and set to wait for the time we were to meet the rest.

Quarter past one arrived soon and we met up with the two girls form vrouw.nl. They told us that we had to wait for the other two cause they had managed to get lost. Me and Jeltje we still don’t get that cause it’s only one road to the byenkorf from the train station. In the end they did arrive and we started to do some filming, showing things that were in our bags for the lads and all that…

After that they told us that the meet and greet would be at the hotel they were staying. Me and Jeltje showed the way cause we had been there before and the others hadn’t. We were met with about fifteen fans who had been waiting there all morning… I know it can get quite cold outside so I had a little chat with them… They wished us luck and had all these things they wanted to know. I forgot most of them… sorry girls…

We were waiting outside cause they wouldn’t let us in at first and they only did after showing our ID and the mail we had gotten. I waved at the girls and waved the picture we had made two years ago in Walibi World while wearing our Dutchies love Westlife shirt… We had to wait a bit longer in the lobby of the hotel… Are those seats comfy or what… We were told that we looked rather calm but when I showed them my hand and how much it shaked they realized it was just nerves.

Finally we were guided upstairs and the carpet was so soft it made you think you were walking on clouds and Jeltje confessed to me that it would be so easy to fall down and I just nodded. We were let in this room were lunch was set out and it smelled great... hehe… We sat ourselves in the corner with a good view on the door. We got champagne but we all forgot about it so no-one touched it (the lads drank theirs though)… I could hear the lads outside the door even before they went in… Kian or Shane was first don’t really remember who was first but I was like OMG it’s real... the next one that came just yelled “Hi” and the ice was broken... Mark followed and after him Nicky… They introduced themselves Shane even asked how I was doing and I was like nervous... Mark asked the same and I went like yeah I’m nervous and he went “You don’t need to be”... Nicky just said “You alright”…

So Shane asked all of us what song we liked best on the album and Mark was sitting between us so Shane asked him too and he goes “Yeah Total Eclipse” and Shane looked at Jeltje and goes “What about you?” and she answered in Dutch with yes that one... I looked at Shane and told him “She said yes that one”... Shane looks at her and goes “She doesn’t speak English”. I laughed and told him that yes she does speak English.

I had put the gifts on the table so when they were all finally seated… *Shane next to me* he started picking at the gifts going like “Is that for me?”... I went like “No let me see” and handed each their painting. Shane really liked his said it resembled him. And Nicky was like “Who’s this? Is it upside down?” he was mostly joking ‘cause when I said if you don’t like then give it back he went like no… Mark said his looked like Brian but he laughed while saying that… I also gave them cards and when Nicky read the text I wrote on his (when your child is born you realize that the life you had was worthless) he was looked at me and was like “yeah...” and nodded... I think he got the meaning. Kian went to Shane... “You read the card first before you open the gift” and Mark was like “It’s an early Christmas”.

Shane couldn’t read my name on the card so he asked me what my name was and I was like Josien and he goes “Ooohh I thought that was a V???” I said it reminded me of the Taxi driver in Sligo… So he goes all excited and asked me if I’d been to Sligo… yeah, I answered, in April.

I handed Kian the card form Samantha who gave it to me outside and I said from one of the fans outside and he went “Yeah I know them”... after that I asked Mark about a cookie jar he had gotten yesterday from Kim... He said he had seen it but hadn’t taken anything out of it yet...

Then they asked us for a good joke and I was like yeah but I have to translate it which was impossible so Shane goes “No good English or Irish jokes?” and I go no don’t know any and the interviewer from vrouw.nl asked him if he knew any… he said yes but that Nicky knows the best... In the end it was Kian who was telling a joke but I didn’t quite catch it.

So the gift for Nicky’s twins was next and Shane goes “Yeah the wooden shoes...” He recognized them and we went like “Yeah we gave you some for Nicole last year” *we gave it to his dad and he gave it to Shane* and Shane goes “Yeah I remember them my dad gave them to me”... We were happy. I went to Nicky like “Yeah we needed two cause you’re having twins”… He radiated from happiness… So Nicky also got this angel from Jeltje and he goes “This looks more like me than this painting” *I have a feeling he was jealous of the other ones* and Shane goes like “Yeah but they show lots of time and effort”... *made my day he did*

Suddenly Nicky goes like yeah she *points at other girl* said she would give us a surprise and she had given them a can which had this label with surprise on it... so Nicky tried to get the lid of… which didn’t work apparently. I went you need a can-opener… So Kian decided to give it a try... they gave up soon afterwards.

They were all talking separately and I needed their attention so I went like “EVERYBODY”… and Kian went like everybody… so I held up the picture from us in the shirts and told them that it was made the day Mark came out he was gay.. *oh the embarrassment* and asked them if they wouldn’t mind signing my shirt… which they all did. Shane loved the shirt and really looked at and he even read what was on it *dutchies love Westlife*. It was a great idea to bring it with me. Nicky asked me if I wanted Kian to do Brian’s autograph (cause he can apparently) and I was like “No I already met him” and Shane was like, “Today?” and I looked at him and said “No two years ago”. and Jeltje had hers with her too and so they signed that one… and Nicky goes to Kian “there is another one” and Kian answered with “yeah when you do one you’ve got to do them all or else they get mad”…And I went “no there are eleven of them but we only brought two”.. When Mark signed my shirt he went like “okay so this is the day I came out”…

Mark had gotten bonbons and he picked one out and Shane goes “Are they any good?” and he goes “Yeah they are, take one”… So he hands the box to Shane and Shane turns to Kian and goes “What do you want brown or white?” and Kian goes “Well I have to see them before I eat them”… So Shane takes one and takes a bite..

I asked them when they were coming back to Holland for the tour and Nicky went like “We are here” and than he realized I said the tour and he was like “Well we’ll be back in 200…….. 8” right... I started going like that’s two years... Shane went “Noo that’s one year and three months”. After that they started asking our favourite song from the ratpack album and I managed to blurt out Mack The Knife… Shane and Kian started laughing and Shane even repeated it which had the rest in stitches.

Suddenly Mark started throwing bits of the wrapping paper at Shane and I asked him if he liked throwing things at Shane and he goes “Yeah Shane likes that… why don’t you throw something?” and Jeltje picks up the marker and throws it at Shane and he just continues and Mark is sniggering next to Jeltje… So he looks at me and goes “You throw something” so I did and he laughs even louder and we laugh with him…

Suddenly Shane picks this disgusting bonbon out of the package and goes like “This doesn’t look so nice” and the woman from vrouw.nl goes “Maybe you should eat it to put it out of it’s misery”. Shane goes “Noooo I already tried it and it wasn’t any good”. It was the bonbon he had tried earlier he just had shoved it back in with the others.

So Dave and this woman come on and go times up but we wanted a picture and Dave was like yeah a group one so we all huddled together and the lads started singing Smile so I sang along... Dave took a blurry picture by the way…

Shane was standing next to me and I was like “I’m hot I’m radiating heat” and he and Nicky go “Yeah there is some ice over there”… So we had to say goodbye and Shane gives me a hug and a kiss on my cheek… and Mark hugged me and I asked if I could have a picture and he was like yeah… and that was my dream a picture with Mark... I quickly had to grab my stuff and I so hope I didn’t leave anything behind…

We filmed some more outside and they even shot some of the fans standing there.. We had to tell some stories but I was like completely blank all of a sudden... I had met Westlife…
And now about seven hours later I believe it’s all a dream… but I have a picture with Mark on my nightstand and a shirt with their autographs… how can it be a dream… I forgot to ask so many things and say so many things… It’s really weird how you can forget everything when you only have to reach next to you to touch one of the lads…

I probably forgot lots of things… but I’ll add them when I remember them…

Flying Without Brian… - 14 December 2006

By Aoife Kelly

Westlife reveal why they are in a World of Their Own

In the past decade the clean-shaven and cherubic Westlife lads have become stalwart veterans of the pop world and one of Ireland’s most successful acts.

With 14 British number ones, they’ve had the most number one singles (behind only Elvis and The Beatles), they’ve sold out 95 Irish concerts and have just released their eighth studio album prior to a whopping eight-date stint at The Point in April.

The chart-topping sensation’s longevity has surprised everyone – not least themselves – and they’re now negotiating uncharted territory the likes of which other bands, never mind boybands, can only dream of.

Even their idols The Backstreet Boys, for whom they opened at The Point in 1998, didn’t last as long, splitting after seven years due to dwindling sales. Take That and their Irish forerunners Boyzone managed just six years each.

Westlife’s latest offering, The Love Album, is a collection of 11 power ballads. It was the last record on their current deal, but they’ve just signed a new contract which will see them through another five albums.

“We never really put a time frame on it even though everyone, Louis [Walsh] included, probably thought, well, we might get a greatest hits album out and that would be it,” says Nicky.

“When we got the Greatest Hits 1 it was 2003 and it was like, ‘This is where Boyzone finished up, This is where Take That finished up.’ We felt we had so much more to give and the record label thought so as well and we just went back into studio and kept recording.”

The only time they really wondered whether the game was up was in 2004 when Brian McFadden announced he was leaving Westlife to spend more time with his family.

“That was a big kick in the arse to be honest, because we didn’t see it coming and the media went on his side and everyone was saying it was like when Robbie left Take That and Geri left the Spice Girls and the bands crumbled,” reveals Nicky.

But it turned out that Brian’s sudden and dramatic departure had little impact on Westlife’s profile. In fact, they went on to achieve some of their greatest success. Later that year they released their Rat Pack inspired album, Allow Us To Be Frank, and last year they released their hugely successful Face To Face album and the single, You Raise Me Up.

Both the album and the single went to number one in the British charts; the first time the band held both top album and single position in the same week.

“I think it was nice in the years in the after-math [of Brian’s departure] to stick two fingers up at everybody who didn’t believe it, including media, including whatever. That was nice,” grins Nicky.

Despite their success, they still feel there’s more to achieve. Having just conquered Australia they’ve practically conquered the world – except for the notoriously difficult-to-break US market.

They’ve worked with Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Lulu, Donna Summer and Donny Osmond and on other occasions they’ve sung with Sinead O’Connor, Dolores O’Riordan, and even actor Kevin Spacey, who is said to be a very talented swing singer.

On The Love Album, at Louis Walsh’s suggestion, they did a duet with Brian McFadden’s girlfriend, Delta Goodrem, on the old Air Supply Hit All Out Of Love.

Nicky admits they were surprised, “Our initial reaction was, ‘What’s Brian going to think? He used to be in the band and now we’re singing with his girlfriend – is that going to be a problem?’ We rung Brian up and asked him what he thought. He said, ‘Yeah, I think it’s a great idea! Why not?’”

The band still keep in touch with Brian. There is no animosity between them, although they rarely get to meet up these days. And when they do they don’t dwell on the past or analyze each other’s personal lives.

“What we both miss about each other is the laugh we used to have together,” says Mark of his former bandmate. “Sometimes we just get really drunk and have a laugh, you know, whether it’s in a casino or a nightclub.”

Both Mark and Nicky can sympathize with the difficulties Brian is having in his personal and professional lives at the moment.

“He’s a good guy. We always said it – we never fell out with him. He really has a heart of gold and he’s having a difficult time of it lately,” Nicky reveals. “Brian had to do what he had to do for himself so we would never hold that against Brian. Unfortunately at the time we were angry for lots of different reasons. Three weeks away from a world tour, we were like ‘was our dream over?’ The press seemed to think so. There was a lot of anger there for a while but never physically to him in a room or anything. But it was like ‘F**k him anyway!’ You know? But we’ve got over that and now people ask us would we take him back and the answer to that, unfortunately, is no. We’re in a different place now. We’re not the Westlife we were when Brian was in it,” Nicky says.

Mark adds, “To be honest, equally the way we are saying we don’t think it would be right for him to be in the band again, he wouldn’t think it would be right to join us again.”

On top of their successful careers, the Westlife boys have found much happiness in their personal lives too. Shane and Nicky married their long-term girlfriends Gillian Walsh and Georgina Ahern in 2003.

Shane and Gillian had their first baby Nicole in July last year while Nicky and Georgina recently announced that they are expecting their first baby next year. Meanwhile Kian Egan has set up home with ex-Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert in Sligo and Mark is going strong with boyfriend Kevin McDaid, formerly of boyband V.

It’s been a great year for Mark since coming out and he is genuinely touched by the support he has received from fans and the public.

“It’s all been positive. I haven’t had one single negative response, comment, reaction, nothing. I think that’s important for everyone to know,” Mark reveals.

Over the years the lads have taken stick about being in a boyband and even though they’ve had two bottles thrown at them Nicky insists it’s mostly just good-natured banter.

“I think Boyzone carved the way for us,” he reveals. “They seemed to get an awful lot of stick at the time. I remember one time in the very early days we were doing a photoshoot on an open top bus and a guy pulled out of a side street in a white van, looked up at us and just shouted, ‘Arse bandits!’ and it was like something out of The Commitments,” recalls Nicky.

“We pissed ourselves laughing. It was hilarious,” says Mark.

Nicky adds, “Even now in pubs lads will come up and try and have a laugh with you, and take the piss in a way that they’re not trying to belittle you or anything.”

But it does bother the Westlife boys to be considered role models for younger fans.

“I live my life the way I want to live it,” says Nicky, “I don’t not do things because I’m in Westlife. I just don’t do those things anyway in my own life. I don’t do drags, I never have done. I do drink and if I get particularly drunk I’m not worried about a 12-year-old reading it. I’m not. I’m not 12, I’m 28.”

Mark agrees, “There is an element of a role model in us for our fans but we’re pop singers, we’re not parents. They have parents to teach them right and wrong. I think it’s too much to ask of anyone to be a parent figure to millions of people, to all of our fans.”

The Love Album is out now. Westlife will perform at The Point Theatre, Dublin on 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28 April

EXCLUSIVE: Twins Joy For Nicky And Georgina - 14 December 2006

Flying With Our Twins!

By Kathryn Rogers

Westlife star Nicky Byrne and wife Georgina are set for double trouble as they've revealed they are to have twins! Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will also be celebrating twin joy as Georgina gives birth to his first grandchildren

The couple - who are expecting in June - broke the news to family and friends that they were expecting last month. However the pair have been keeping news of their double bonanza under wraps.

Nicky told The Star "We are both completely overjoyed and can’t wait till next summer". He revealed he "can't stop smiling" since he discovered Georgina was expecting their first children.
“I can only imagine what it will be like. When Brian [McFadden, ex-Westlife member] had Molly and then Lilly, I personally felt that it was too young for me at that time.

“At the moment there is no end in sight for Westlife, so Georgina and I thought ‘we’re not going to sit around and wait for it to end to start a family’. So this is the icing on the cake!” he added.

Two years ago Nicky revealed that he wanted to be a dad by the time he’s 28. The Westlife star turned 28 in October.

Nicky and Georgina got married in France in August 2003 and are childhood sweethearts who have been inseparable since they started dating at school.

Westlife At Jesnen Fan Report - 14 December 2006

Debbie from Holland was at a show called Jesnen yesterday where Westlife made an appearance and she wrote a lovely report of the show! Thank you sooo much Debbie! Also, thanx Marina from Holland for all your help!

Debbie’s Report - Westlife @ Jensen on 13 December 2006

At the 13th of December Westlife would join a TV-program in the Netherlands, called Jensen! The show was recorded at the 13th of December and well be seen in the Netherlands on the 15th of December.

At about 9.00 p.m. Westlife came in the studio and everybody went totally crazy! First Robert Jensen (the presenter) started with a small interview with the lads.

They all got a glass of champagne and Shane and Mark drunk it empty within a couple seconds. They all tried to convince Nicky that he would do that too, but he wouldn't. "There are too many bubbles in it! With Heineken or Guinness I would do that". And so it happened. Not long after that he got a glass of Heineken, but he never drunk it empty in a couple of seconds (such a shame :p). What did happened was that Kian and Shane both probably drunk the champagne too fast and within five minutes that they were in the studio, they were already burping! Funny to see and hear that!

Nicky also got great news. Jensen asked him about the baby that he and Georgina are going to have and he replied with such wonderful news. He and Georgina are expecting TWINS!!!! I am so happy for the both of them!!!! Congrats Nix & Gina!!

Jensen also asked Shane, Mark and Kian how it's going with their lovelifes. With Mark and Kevin everything is going perfect and the same is for Kian and Jodi. With Shane, Gillian and Nicole everything is going great also, and Nicole is already 16 months old!! What is the time flying by! I still can remember that Nicole was just born!!

Like normal they were all joking and making a laugh all the time. Jensen also asked them how it was to work with famous stars like Mariah Carey and Delta Goodrem. Kian wanted to talk about Delta Goodrem right away, but Jensen wanted to know more about Mariah Carey. Kian tried again to start a conversation about Delta, but Jensen didn't let him! Finally Kian gave in and started a small talk about Mariah Carey. That was funny to see how Jensen turned Kian's decision to talk about Delta and Mariah.

At the end of their interview, they also sang two songs from their new album. Love Can Build A Bridge and The Rose. Such amazing songs!!

And everything is coming an end, also to a great night with those Irish lads! I really enjoyed it and it was great to see them in real again!

Unfortunately I don't have pictures, 'cause they didn't allow me! Hopefully you enjoyed the report and had fun with reading it!

Best wishes,

Debbie

Still Going Strong - 14 December 2006

This is astounding, bearing in mind especially that it’s an album of covers – but Westlife’s Love Album is the fastest selling record of their career. The Love Album sold more than The Beatles Love and U2’s U218 albums combined.

In fact The Love Album is the fastest selling album in Ireland since U2’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, released two years ago.

After eight years Westlife are still at the top of their game and continue to push the boundaries of achievement.

All You Need Is Love – Interview From RTE Guide - 14 December 2006

With their latest album Westlife have notched up yet another number one. Donal O’Donoghue meets the boys who have become men.

“We always like to say that we are not individually very famous but we are in a very famous band,” says Shane Filan, one quarter of Westlife, is spelling out his (and the band’s) bottom line.

For some time they have been defying the trades description act. They are no longer a boy band but a “man band”: average age 27. The have also confounded the life expectance of their genre. Is it because they are, as Filan puts it, bigger than the sum of their parts (the rest of the line up is Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily)? Or is it, like the mafia, no one’s bigger than the family? This is show business. Westlife are as much a boy brand as a boy band.

Today, I’m meeting three-quarters of Westlife (Mark is lost to make-up). It is early November. Their new single (The Rose) is selling by the bucket-load, the new album (The Love Album) is imminent and The Love Tour kicks off a million dates in 2007. Immediately after this interview Westlife will record Ryan Confidential and later that evening they will be guests on The Late Late Show. The band’s usual heat has been intensified by the news that Nicky is going to be a dad as his wife (and daughter of you-know-who) Georgina, is expecting their first child in June. Love was in the air and for someone struggling for a theme – or even questions – it offered something to grasp into. This was going to be the “love interview”.  Two hours later it was dangerously lurching towards the “hate interview”.

We had arranged to meet in a hotel in Limerick. One hour before the appointed time the venue is switched to a castle in Co Clare. Then that name is pushed back and back and back. Inside my skull the words of another journalist hammer through: “The media need Westlife more than Westlife needs the media.” In business term this is probably true. They are the world’s biggest boy band with a record 14 UK number ones, albums sales in excess of 34million and are huge in Europe, Asia and Down Under (that’s Australia). Recently, they trumped Oasis, U2 and The Beatles to claim the top spot in the UK albums chart. “The boys still have it,” gushed their fans; “The Day the Music Died,” screamed The Sun.

The boys arrive in installments wearing their war paint. The waiter fusses about the table. Two cokes too many are brought. “We didn’t order those,” says Kian who is quite bossy (later that evening when quizzed by Pat Kenny about his marital plans, he dismisses it as “The same old questions as last year.”). Nicky bounces in with his hair gelled to spiky punctuation. He’s talking brightly and loudly so that the quiet Americans at the next table have gone even quieter. I like him. At the other end of the table Shane is all business savvy. His recent involvement in real estate has gone swimmingly and he is currently working on another property development close to his hometown in Sligo. I ask him about a Westlife duet with Mike Tyson that had been touted last year. “That was a load of bollix,” he says. I like him too.

In a nearby room a TV crew have set up for Ryan Confidential. It seems like strange bedfellows: Mr G Ryan’s decadent interrogator and the shiny superstars of Westlife. “Gerry has always been a good supporter of us,” says Shane as Kian weighs in with a damn good impersonation of Ryan’s bluster and blunderbuss technique. “Tell us, really guys, what ye are REALLY like… you know… DRINK!”

Drink and drags and rock ‘n’ roll. Not quite Westlife: or at least The Public Image Limited version. In their official website (“the unofficial ones are much better,” suggests Kian) the band are described as ‘quiet superstars’. “That comes from the fact that we live normal lives,” says Kian. “Three of us are boys from Sligo (Nicky is from Dublin) and we go back to Sligo, play golf and go to the local just like anybody else. We are not pushing ourselves in the media or in the limelight as individuals. We never really wanted fame for ourselves as individuals but we always wanted fame for the group.”

Westlife were formed in 1998 and managed by pop guru Louis Walsh, who had also chaperoned the other Irish boy band, Boyzone, to mega fame. With mentors Walsh and Simon Cowell (who signed them) on their case, Westlife swiftly made a mark. In 1998, they opened for Backstreet Boys in Dublin and won Best New Act at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party. Their first single (Swear It Again) went to Number One, as did the second (If I Let You Go) as did the third (Flying Without Wings) and so on. Sell-out tours of the UK and Ireland were followed by Europe and Asia. The only blip was an unsuccessful bid to conquer the US. “America is a funny one,” says Egan. “As much as we want it to happen we have to be realistic as well. When pop becomes big in America again, it could possibly open up for Westlife.”

By late 2002, on the eve of the release of their Greatest Hits album, rumors of a split were pervasive. In a way it seemed like history was repeating itself. Their predecessors, Boyzone, imploded after they released their “Best Of” album. But this time it was different. As Walsh put it, Westlife had supported Boyzone one tour and had seen first-hand what could go wrong. So they stuck together. When Brian McFadden dramatically left the line-up in 2004 the wheels didn’t come off and Mark Feehily’s announcement that he was gay was welcomed by the industry and the fans.

Now they are riding higher than ever: settled into the groove of success. So I ask for their definition of love: after all it’s the name of their album, tour, song and everything else they are selling at the moment. For Shane (married to Gill with one child, Nicole)  it’s “when you feel totally complete with somebody.” Kian? “”when you wake up in the morning and look across at the person you are with and know that she is the one you want to spend your life with.” Well I did ask for it!

But this love-in gives Shane an opportunity to slag Kian, who has been dating actress Jodi Albert, about marriage. He is not for turning. He points out the window. “I’m looking out at that lake and thinking ‘wouldn’t it be great to come down here for a week and go fishing?’ The thing is you can’t do that if you have a baby. I have all these mad plans in my head to go traveling and backpack the world. Take a year out, live it up a bit.”

Meanwhile, Nicky is contemplating a future of late nights and nappies. “I can only imagine what it will be like when the baby is born,” he says. “I haven’t stopped smiling since I knew. When Brian had Molly and then Lilly, I personally felt that it was too young for me at that time. At the moment there is no end in sight for Westlife, so Georgina and I thought that we’re not going to sit around and wait for it to end to start a family. So this is the icing on the cake.”

On the train to this interview, I told a fellow passenger that I was going to meet Westlife. “Ask them if they ever get tired of it all?” she suggested. I don’t even get that far. The good (or bad) news is that Westlife are planning for the long haul. They cite the working ideal of U2. “They have other lives apart from their career,” says Nicky. “They have children in school and have a family life and still manage to be very successful.” Shane nods his head “You can’t burn out,” he says. “If you burn out the band is over and you can take the rest of your life off. We don’t want to look back and say ‘we should have done it this way’.”.

No fear of that. Westlife are determined to do it their way.

Westlife, play The Point, Dublin, on April 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28.

Westlife Check In On Delta, Their New Album+More; Watch Our Interview - 12 December 2006

Watch the full interview here

Here last month on a whirlwind five day promo, loveable Irish lads Westlife gave us a few moments out to talk about their latest UK#1 album 'The Love Album', working with Delta Goodrem, how it feels to be the only band in history to achieve 14 consecutive UK#1 singles and their new "pure pop" album in the pipeline... Watch our full interview here!

Westlife touched down in Australia for a five day promo tour last month in support of their new UK #1 release 'The Love Album' album and 'Live At Wembley' DVD, and we were lucky enough to snag a few moments to chat with them about their rocketing success.

"When you're living it you don't really pay too much attention to that," insists the modest crew, who insist that having 14 UK #1 singles to their name (and a Guiness record for it) is a glory they'll save to share with their grandchildren.

Their latest release 'The Love Album' has just gone to the top of the charts in the UK, beating The Beatles, U2 and other big wigs for the honour.

"We tried to pick the best 11 songs we felt was good enough... we didn't want to make it a karaoke album, we wanted to it to be very vocal album for us," said Shane.

Kian rates a personal favourite as 'The Dance' by Garth Brooks, though surprisingly he says some of their greatest recordings didn't make the cut.

"One song that we all loved was 'Hard For Me To Say I'm Sorry' by Chicago - which didn't even make the album!" he said.

One track which certainly did made it was their duet with Delta Goodrem 'All Out Of Love', which the guys said it was "an honour" to record with her.

"We also really thought she'd be a good person to collaborate with... The first person that came into our head was Delta! She's such a nice girl..." said Mark.

The guys also chatted about their new DVD 'Live At Wembley' (now in stores) which was recorded earlier this year in London and was a highlight performance for the group.

"Wembley was a place we always intended to do and they'd just changed the stage and it was a great night - all our family was there... it was a show we were really proud of and the fans really enjoyed it," said Nicky.

Mark also let slip on a new "pure pop" album in the pipeline which they hope will take them back to their roots with new songwriters and producers on board - their pick being Max Martin (Kelly Clarkson, Backstreet Boys).

"We want to get back to what we stated of as which is very much a pop act and that's what we're aiming for the best album - just pure pop. We've always wanted to release original pop songs..."

And their final message? A shout-out to fellow Irishman and Australia's brand new Idol winner Damien Leith of course!

"Fair play to him! Fly the flag!"

Snap up your tix now to their upcoming Aussie tour this February which will be sure to capture your hearts!

£1.2m Christmas Party - 10 December 2006

PROPERTY tycoon Ray Smith blew £1.2million on the Christmas party to end all parties yesterday.

Ray and wife Lisa flew in Charlotte Church, Will Young, Jason Donovan, Lionel Richie, Sugababes and Westlife to sing for guests at the annual bash compered by Ricky Tomlinson. The Tweenies were there to entertain kids.

The couple, who live near footballers Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer and snooker star John Parrott, turned their home in Formby, Merseyside, into a winter wonderland, with a snow machine, ice sculptures and dodgems. Last year they spent £500,000 on the party, with X Factor's Chico and 4tune, plus Rachel Stevens and Go West providing the music. They hired Liverpool Cathedral Choir to sing carols.

Shane’s 200MPH Airport Terror - 9 December 2006

EXCLUSIVE Westlife star tells of fear for life after aircraft fails
By Paul Martin

WESTLIFE'S Shane Filan revealed last night that he felt lucky to be alive after a 320kmh plane nightmare.

The 27-year-old singer's flight from Sydney was abandoned seconds before take-off when the aircraft suffered a sudden mechanical failure.

The Sligo star and other passengers had to spend the night at an airport hotel while the incident was investigated.

He told the Daily Mirror: "We were flying down the runway and then suddenly the plane was shaking like mad.

"I gripped on to the seat and then there was a huge crunching and screeching noise.

"The pilot slammed the breaks on so hard that it actually veered off the runway on to the grass.

"I closed my eyes and waited for the worst to happen. I was thinking, 'Oh my God, I don't want to die like this'."

Shane, who with wife Gillian has a one-year-old daughter Nicole, was returning home from a two-week promotional stint in Australia where the band had played a string of sell-out shows.

He added: "We have to fly all the time with Westlife but I'm dreading getting on a plane now. The experience really scared me and I had to take some sleeping tablets to get through the flight the next day."

"I'm chilling out with my family for a few days now and hopefully I won't be too nervous next time I get on a plane."

Before this incident Shane was famed for his love of flying. A year ago he bought a private helicopter for his Sligo mansion. He has taken flying lessons and is on the verge of qualifying for a full licence.

Ronan Keating once hired hypnotist Paul McKenna to get him over a fear of flying after an air scare while in Boyzone.

He said: "I have tried everything from hypnosis to self-help books but I still dread getting into a plane."

Westlife Live Competition - 8 December 2006

We had an overwhelming number of entries for our competition celebrating the release of the new DVD Live At Wembley: Face To Face Tour 2006.

We asked you to tell us which was your favourite track that you’ve ever seen Westlife perform live and why. Here’s a selection of our favourites: congratulations to Victoria Thomas, who is our prize winner and will be meeting the band backstage at one of their 2007 shows!

‘Flying Without Wings. That song means so much to me. First time I saw them sing it live I was with my nan, a year later my nan died & we had that played at the funeral. It’s a huge part of my life and I'm thankful Westlife helped me through it!’ Victoria Thomas – winner

‘Queen Of My Heart’ on Face to Face 2006, where the performance showcased all their distinct voices. The production enhanced Westlife’s electrifying performance by reducing the pop element and creating a more emotional effect, walking down the steps in time to the acoustic drum beat.’ Vicky Walker

‘I have a lot to thank Westlife for – they kept me conscious in every Biology lesson at school. ‘On My Shoulder’ was on permanent play inside my head. It is my favourite song, plus Shane waved at me at Wembley; just the memory kept me from fainting in the lesson!’   Rebecca Hersey

‘Flying Without Wings. The song is one that will always stick with the band as career defining. Fantastic lyrics with superb music and perfectly sung. Very often ballads are let down when sung live but it's exceptional - and a real group effort. A beautiful song which touches everybody. Perfection!’ Matthew Jones

‘You Raise Me Up’. Just a song...but suddenly you start shivering, you feel the tears of joy coming to your eyes and you have goose pimples all over your body. And suddenly, you begin to fly... you reach the stars, you catch one, and you know: you're able to do anything!’ Raphaela Leson

‘My favourite song of Westlife is Close Your Eyes due to the emotional power that is presented in the song both vocally and in the backing of the song. Not only does it have a great vibe but it shows Westlife have great vocal talent.’ Stephen Price

‘My favourite has to be You Raise Me Up because it just meant so much to be stood with two of my best friends and Westlife in front of us. Also seeing them at Edinburgh Castle with them wearing kilts and the castle all lit up, I will NEVER forget that.’ Heather Kate Whitfield

‘World of Our Own. In Bahrain, sitting on the beach, listening to the band practice.  Heaven, we sang along sitting in the sun, watching all that was going on. Westlife were in our world, does life get any better?  That song always reminds us of that glorious day we were able to say ‘welcome to our world’.’ Helen, Pam & Anne

‘Westlife performing Flying Without Wings in Glasgow’s SECC is my favourite because I flung my banner up to the band and Shane caught it, held it up in the air and flung it back down. Shane’s sweat made an ink mark on it. I have treasured the banner ever since.’ Lyndsay Crawford

Stars Tip Leona To Win X Factor - 8 December 2006

"It is tough competition" - Kian Egan

Leona Lewis is the stars' favourite to win this year's X Factor.

In a straw poll of red carpet celebrities, she picked up more votes than fellow semi-finalists Ben Mills and Raymond Quinn.

Westlife singer Kian Egan, former Fame Academy contestant Lemar Obika, Jamie Oliver and ex-Sugababes singer Mutya Beuna all tipped Leona to win the competition.

Unfortunately Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem showed they haven't been watching very closely by tipping the MacDonald Brothers, even though the Scottish duo were voted off last weekend.

Kian said: "It's tough competition there, there is a lot of good people still left."

All You Need Is The Love Album - 8 December 2006

They sit atop the album charts, leaving the likes of U2, Oasis and even the Beatles in their wake. WILLIAM JELLEY reports on the rise of Westlife

In the race to the top of the album charts, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. Westlife were the three-legged donkey next to the thoroughbred stallions of The Beatles, Oasis and U2. The bookies watched and waited as midweek sales turned to Saturday sales, and then - lawksalordy - the shocking news broke that Westlife had actually won it.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be number one," cried Nicky Byrne down the phone line from Australia, where the boy band were midway through an arena tour.

"It means so much to us," he said. "We have the best fans in the world and we want to thank them for all their continued support."

And while Bono and the Gallagher brothers debated a joint lynching of a group more famous for covering other people's music than their own. Simon Cowell, the man who originally signed Westlife, added another cursory tick to his office calendar.

The Love Album, a dinner-jacketed croonersville take on hits such as Easy, Total Eclipse Of The Heart and You Are So Beautiful, was the LP that gave the Irish pop stars their sixth UK number one last week.

It's a career that's justifiably baffled the critics, but it doesn't change facts. Westlife, the barrow boys from Sligo, are the most successful boy band in history.

Striking 14 number one singles from eight albums, and taking, among others, Barry Manilow's Mandy to the top of the charts, the karaoke kings have proved there's no shame in a career founded on other people's music.

Tickets for the boy band's UK visits - which brings them to the Nottingham Arena in March - are already going fast, and look likely to sell out.

Louis Walsh, Westlife's manager and X-Factor goblin, is not a man backward in coming forward. "This is their eighth album," he says, "and proves there is still a long way to go for them. Westlife are up there with the best."

The Love Album Review - 8 December 2006

The nights are drawing in, the trees are dropping their leaves and turkeys are beginning to look decidedly worried. It can mean only one thing – Christmas and the annual battle for the number one slot.

As if that wasn't enough, you've got to contend with the annual dilemma of what to get that special someone. Never fear, those gorgeous lads from Westlife come sleighing to the rescue with their eighth album, The Love album, where we see those Irish crooners pick their favourite love songs and do what they do best - cover other people’s tracks - around a Christmas piano.

The all out lurve-fest begins with Bette Midler's 'Rose' and features the vocals and string arrangements you've come to expect from this highly produced and polished offering.

There are some surprising choices, including ‘All Out of Love’ which features haunting tones ably provided by Delta Goodrem. The boys have taken a feisty, in your face kinda of track and morphed it into an epic making this somewhat different from the original.

Other covers include ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. It’s a brave choice and one that fans of Bonnie Tyler will take a while to warm too, but, with the trademark Westlife formula deftly applied by Steve Mac, it's bound to be a favourite with the Westlife faithful.

However, some tracks seem to have been forced into a Christmas template with ‘You've Lost That Loving Feeling’ particularly odd with its sleigh bell accompaniment.

Westlife have chosen some true classics and given themselves a bit of a makeover. As a result, The Love album does exactly what it says on the tin. Okay, so it hardly pushes the envelope and it’s certainly can’t be described as edgy new music, but it will make good stocking filler fodder for mums and soppy significant others.

Lets Duet In Style - 6 December 2006

It was a night for glamorous couples but one pairing got the VIP guestlist more excited than any other. A Boyzone reunion came one step closer on Friday night when former members Stephen Gately and Ronan Keating duetted at a ball in aid of cancer research UK held in London.

Gately and Keating (both 30) joined forces to sing Boyzone's No matter what at the emeralds and ivy ball in London's roundhouse.

Among the impressed guests was their former manager Louis Walsh who was personally invited by organiser Keating.

Louis told star Sunday "Stephen and Ronan were great". "They still got the magic and you can see why Boyzone sold so many records".

But it wasn’t the only duet of the evening. Former Westlife member Brian McFadden joined his girlfriend Delta Goodrem for a version of Westlife's flying without wings.

The former neighbours star stayed on stage for a special Christmas medley which included Westlife members Shane Filan with his wife Gillian, Nicky Byrne and his pregnant wife Georgina, Kian Egan and his girlfriend Jodi Albert and Mark Feehily with his partner Kevin McDaid.

Stephen Gately and his partner Andrew Cowles turned up in identical outfits. The pair wore matching velvet blazers, white shirts and jeans.

Westlife shifts to February - 6 December 2006

By Bheki Gama

BRITISH pop stars Westlife are no longer touring the region this December as earlier announced.

According to Big Five Entertainment Group Event Manager Gcina Mthethwa the postponement was a resolution by all whom he called hosting partners during a meeting held recently. However, he mentioned that tickets and all other arrangements remain unchanged.

“The hosting partners resolved to postpone the Southern Africa tour to late February,” Mthethwa said, adding that the main reason was that the group’s international agent, International Management Consultant Inco. a company based in Canada, has informed them that the Southern Africa tour will be the last by the British group this side of 2010. “It was agreed that the tour should not be missed by all. And therefore we had to settle for a more relaxed time of the year which was February,” he said, mentioning that December has a lot of other competing events of almost similar magnitude.

To prove that they were not selling Westlife local fans a dummy, Mthethwa produced a binding contract signed by the group’s international agents and the hosting partners. He also produced a fax copy of payment. However, he requested that the name of the contact person and figures involved should not be published, saying they needed to protect both the group’s agents and themselves as hosting partners.

On the issue of money, Mthethwa stated that big time concerts such as this one does not entirely depend on gate takings. He explained that money is raised through things like television rights and official sponsorships. He said there are a lot of television channels who are interested in buying the rights to broadcast the show, mentioning that some are in Botswana as well as Mozambique. The stage alone cost an excess of E1 million.

Christmas Number One Album - 6 December 2006

With the winner of the X Factor, who this year will release a cover of Kelly Clarkson's American Idol smash, 'A Moment Like This', already a strong odds-on favourite with bookies William Hill to land the Christmas No.1 Single, the question of who will top the Christmas albums chart this year is likely to prove far more interesting.

All the key albums are now out, joined in the shops today by Gwen Stefani's 'The Sweet Escape' and Eminem's 'Eminem Presents: The Re Up', so this promises to be one of the most open races in recent chart history.  It could easily go to the wire with a final day of frenzied Christmas shopping on Saturday, December 23rd - the last day that counts towards sales for the Official UK Charts before they are announced on Christmas Eve.

Oasis, The Beatles, U2, Westlife, Girls Aloud and Il Divo continue to sell strongly and are all in the frame to challenge for the No.1 album.  However, with a No.1 single 'Patience' continuing to generate lots of airplay, and TV appearances on the Royal Variety Performance and, crucially, the X Factor Final still to come, HMV believes the momentum may lie with Take That, especially after their spectacular 'An Audience With....' TV special.

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo comments: "It's almost impossible to predict who will be this year's Christmas No.1 album with any certainty - any one of three or four titles could land the top spot.  Almost inevitably it will depend on which artists gain the most profile from the publicity and promotion that is planned over the next few weeks.  For this reason, I'm sticking my neck out to go with Take That, who will surely be given a huge boost by their spectacular 'An Audience With...' TV special and their scheduled appearances on the X Factor Final and the Royal Variety Show.  'Patience' continuing at No.1 in the Singles charts will also help give them the edge.

"However, 'Best Of' albums tend to sell very well at Christmas, with Oasis 'Stop The Clocks' likely to pose the biggest challenge to Take That in a re-run of one of the most famous chart battles of the Nineties.  Greatest Hits from U2, The Beatles, George Michael and Jamiroquai, should also figure strongly, as should Girls Aloud, whose album sales will be boosted when their cover of Tiffany's 'I Think We're Alone Now' is released as a single.

"Il Divo and 'crossover' artists like them, appeal to a potentially massive audience at Christmas, particularly for gift purchasing for older family members, so they will definitely be there or thereabouts and could also spoil Take That's fairytale comeback.

Irish Chart Track Commentary - 4 December 2006

Westlife continue to dominate the Album Chart with sales dipping just 16% against their debut last week, giving them the highest ‘week 2’ sales for any album in Ireland since The Beatles ‘1’ six years ago.

Oasis climb 3 places from No5 to No2 with ‘Stop The Clocks – Greatest Hits’, battling for their sixth No1 in Ireland and leapfrogging U2’s ‘U218’ singles collection which drops to No3. Il Divo have this week’s highest new entry at No4 with their third album ‘Siempre’, continuing the run of success of their self-titled first album which reached No2 in December 2004 and their second album ‘Ancora’ which made No3 this time last year. The Beatles ‘Love’ slips two places from No3 to No5, ahead of Mario Rosenstock’s Gift Grub Vol 7’, down from No4 to No6. Take That have the next new entry at No9 with their fifth album ‘Beautiful World’ – their first studio album since ‘Nobody Else’, which spent 2 weeks at No1 in 1995 and was followed by their ‘Greatest Hits’ which had three weeks at No1 the following year.

Akon and Eminem take a second week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Smack That’ - heading one of the most static charts of the year, in which the Top 2 are unchanged from last week and the next 10 titles shuffle positions. Nelly Furtado breaks the deadlock at No13 with ‘All Good Things (Come To An End)’, up from a No44 download debut last week. It’s her sixth Top 30 single in Ireland and her third of 2006, following ‘Maneater’ and ‘Promiscuous’ which peaked at No2 and No5 respectively.

Can Loife get any better? - 3 December 2006

Welcome to what I hope will be an annual national event-the first "Which Westlifer's got the fittest partner?" contest.

It's the perfect alternative to a Sunday afternoon doze in front of Eastenders.

Do the blond looks of Shane Filan's wife Gillian float your boat, or does Nicky's wife Georgina Ahern suit?

What about the effervescent Jodi Albert, Kian Egan's squeeze.

For the more "exotic" members of the family what say you to Mark Feehily's fella Kevin McDaid? Or I can offer you ex Loifer Brian McFadden’s Delta Goodrem, for they joined the others at a charity bash at London's Roundhouse.

Literally minutes of fun for all the family.

The Love Album No.6 In Europe - 3 December 2006

Westlife`s 'The Love Album' (S/Sony BMG) opens at No. 6 on Top 100 Albums but outdoes all its heavy-hitting rivals in the United Kingdom, selling 219,000 to open at No. 1. It’s actually outpaced by sales of 235,000 for the new 'Now! 65' (EMI/Virgin/Universal), but that album qualifies for the compilation chart rather than the higher-profile artist list.

Cash For Kids - 2 December 2006

Beverley Lyons & Showbiz Liz

G4 couldn't find Scots cathedrals to play in at Christmas as they were all booked up. The four-man popera group, who supported Clyde's Cash For Kids in Glasgow's Hilton yesterday, are going on a special festive tour of UK cathedrals. Lead singer Jonathan Ansell said: "It's a shame for our Scots fans but we'll try and get better organised next year."

X FACTOR judge Louis Walsh made a surprise phone call to the Clyde Cash for Kids lunch yesterday. Louis phoned Clyde One presenter Suzie McGuire during the swish luncheon at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel to garner more support for Ayrshire duo the MacDonald brothers. Louis normally attends lunch when he's up with the Westlife boys, but, this time, he and the band were unable to make it.

WESTLIFE: They're back on top for Xmas!

"There's life in the old dogs yet!"
As they approach another series of sold out concerts and a new record deal WESTLIFE show no signs of slowing down or breaking up, but continue to enjoy good fortune, both at work and in their private lives!

Westlife are smiling, but then again they always are! Putting the best face forward is part of their brief. They give politeness and, it must be said, professionalism and punctuality a good name. This united band of brothers play the game very well, and this is one of the reasons why they are so successful.

Today, Westlife are on top of the world. Nicky Byrne, 28, is literally jumping for joy over the news that he and his wife Georgina are expecting their first child next June. Mark Feehily, 26, who this time last yr told the world he was gay, is now, he tells us, in love with his boyfriend of nearly 2 yrs, Kevin McDaid. Shane Filan 27, is blown away by fatherhood - he says "it has given me something to work and live for" and as for Kian Egan, 26, well ... he's fallen in love with the ocean! Jodi Albert, Kian’s girlfriend is at her wits end he says cos holidays these days are always surfing-orientated; Kian said he has even forced her into a wetsuit! He insists he is not trying to make them into the 'Justin and Cameron of Ireland'

In addition, Westlife‘s career is going to strength to strength. Not only have they just released a new album of epic long songs, and will reign for eight nights in The Point next April, but they have just signed a brand new five yr album deal with SongBMG that will see them working well into the next decade. We’re not rid of them yet – Westlife are going to run and run!
Who would of thought when they started out eight yrs ago as Louis Walsh’s post Boyzone follow up, that they would today be one of the biggest boybands of all time, with 35 million records sold?
VIP hooked up, in what is almost an annual event, with Shane, Nicky, Kian and Mark to find out what they have been up to for the last 12 months …. And of course to talk about their new record, The Love Album, and the forthcoming Love Tour 2007.

Another album of covers, boys?
Mark: We know, it’s not that original really!
Shane: To be perfectly honest, when we started out making this album, we were looking for another record like last year’s Face To Face, a record of mostly original songs, but the songs were just not there. There were probably three songs out of 40 songs that were up to our standard, so we thought, “What do we do? Do we a take a year off? Or do we do another themed album of covers?”

Who came up with the idea for, The Love Album?
Kian:
It was Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell who said “Why don’t we do a tribute to love songs? You sing love songs all the time anyway!” so we thought, “Yeah, good idea”
Nicky: We decided not to do 12 completely obvious love songs. There are songs on there that I would not even have thought of. Have YOU Ever Been in Love, sung famously by Celine Dion is my favourite.
Mark: Total Eclipse of The Heart, by Bonnie Tyler is my favourite. It’s soulful and raspy and as a singer, I relished the challenge of doing something a lil different.

Kian, the guys all agree that you are the business brain, the wheeler-dealer of the band. With that in mind would if Westlife could write their own songs and make even more money in the process?
Kian: I think if Westlife wrote our own songs we wouldn’t make more money, because we are not really songwriters.
Shane: We have all written songs in the past, but we want to sing brilliant songs, and those songs we can’t write.

Maybe you could learn and this new deal with Song BMG will buy you time to develop anyway? On Take That‘s new record, all four guys have song –writing credits.
Shane: Maybe for Take That, making a comeback, it was about them writing their own material, but we’re not U2 – we are just good singers. Mark is probably the most talented songwriter in this band but he writes all this mad R n B. Songs that would not suit me!
Mark: Shane, not all my songs are R n B! Mw writing songs for the West life would be weird anyway. I don’t even know if I’d be able to do it. If one of us stood up to the record company and said “We want to try and write the next album,” they’d be like “Oh, here we go!”

With this new five album record deal just signed, early retirement is obviously off the cards?

Kian: It is! There is life in the old dogs yet! There is a very lucrative deal for us and it is worth our while to do. I’m delighted.

And there are more congratulations ahead, Nicky?
Nicky:
(Smiling broadly) There are! Georgina and I are having a baby! We are ecstatic

How is the mother to be doing?
Great she is looking absolutely fantastic. We are walking around with smiles form ear to ear.

Georgina is not due until June, it was early to announce the news?
Yeah it was, but each to their own. They always say that 12 weeks is the safety date and weeks, but we just so excited we wanted to shout it form the rooftops! We actually wanted to tell everybody weeks ago. Also I’m away for the month and I won’t realistically be home until Christmas.

What type of dad would you like to think you’ll be?
I don’t know. I think I’m still in shock that there is going to be a little child that was created by Georgina and I. And that will probably look like one of us or both of us, running around (smiling broadly again)

Who will be doing the night feeds and the changing nappies?
Shane has been lucky because Gillian has mostly done the night feeds with Nicole, so I was saying to Georgina, "When I’m up at 4.30am for GMTV will you?” and Georgina said “No way, we will both be up together.” But I can’t wait!

How does the
Taoiseach feel about being a granddad?
Bettie is over the moon about the thought of being a granddad. Again the reality hasn’t hit home yet.

What about Cecilia Ahern as Godmother?
We haven’t asked anyone yet but myself and Gina always said that our first baby, Cecilia would be godmother and my brother Adam would be godfather, Cecilia is always so generous, I always call her my rich little sister. She just spoils everyone, even our dog Keano.

Shane, have you given Nicky any tips on what to expect?
Georgina and Nicky have nothing to worry about. And anyway I can say nothing to prepare them. For the last few years, especially since Nicole was born, Nicky has been really broody, Both he and Georgina are great with Nicole, and will be first class parents.

Any sign of number two for you?
Not yet! When Nicole is around three, I think well start trying again, If we were at home all the time, we would consider having another one straight away but its hard when you travel all the time.

How has fatherhood changed your life?
Nicole gives meaning to my life. I have a lot more to live and work for now. Westlife is amazingly important but it’s not what life is about. Life is about having a healthy happy family, which thankfully I do with Gillian and Nicole.

Mark, when VIP spoke to you 12 months ago you had just came out - how has your year been?
It’s been fantastic. It’s been a very liberating time, It’s been the first time in 26 years when I have been able to fully be myself.

Have you changed?
I probably have, I’ve become a happier person.
Shane: He’s one million percent happier. He’s really been his own man and living the life he wants.

You have been with your boyfriend Kevin McDaid for two years now, sounds serious?
Yeah it’s definitely a serious relationship, It’s full on love and it’s great...It’s the icing on the cake for me to be in a relationship, to be happy and to have somebody there to go home too. I have always longed for it and now I have it (Smiling)

Kevin used to be in a boyband called V, what’s he up to at the minute?
He’s into photography at the moment. He’s been photographing a lot of artist, he has also photographed Westlife he even shot the live cover for our DVD.

He must have some nice photos of you?
Yeah he has.

With the advent of new laws on gay can marry, would you consider marriage?
It’s not really something we have talked about but I would not rule it out.

With Shane now a daddy and Nicky soon to be - are you getting broody?
Kids are fantastic but I’m definitely not thinking about it at the minute, but yet again I wouldn’t rule it out.

What do you and Kevin enjoy doing together?
We love great food and great films, and hanging out with our mates. At the moment we are decorating our London apartment which I love doing.

Kian, what do you and Jodi get up to in your free time?
Jodi likes the outdoor life just like me, We like going away camping spontaneously. Getting up throwing the tent in the back of the car and heading for France.

What is it about the outdoors you both love so much?
It’s the complete opposite to everything in my life and its better than sitting in front of the TV. I get up every morning at 7am, and if the surf is good, I grab my board.

Have you got Jodi into a wetsuit yet?
I have got Jodi into a wetsuit quite a few times, She’s not mad on the surfing though, she prefers to watch me and walk the dog on the beach. But she’ll surf in Ireland before she surfs abroad. She’s frightened of the sharks

Are you trying to be the Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz of Ireland?
(Laughing) No we are not trying to be Justin and Cameron of Ireland. I don’t even think they can surf. I have never even seen them with a surfboard beside them.

What is Jodi up to work wise at the moment?
She’s got a music thing starting soon but it’s too early to talk about it, She just had a show called Respectable out in the UK and she’s working on a new play and another TV show.

So Shane, when are you going to leave and go solo?
Never! Why would I want to leave Westlife? It would be stupid for me to leave I love this band. It’s like going on the road with a football team, I don’t know if I would enjoy it on my own.

Mark?

I don’t like the idea of being solo either. It would be lonely. My dream would be too right other songs for other people.

As a band you always very well groomed. You sing ballads and lots of soppy love songs. Outside the band do you find yourself trying to do masculine things?
Shane: No I don’t feel the need to go and play rugby and grow stubble...
Nicky: We have never been painted with that squeaky clean image, but we are a bit more laddish than we probably let on...

You are live at the point Theatre with the Love Tour for eight nights in April - What are your fans like this days?
Shane:
They are older. There’s a lot more older women coming the last couple of years. We have a fanbase with longevity, they are settled down and they have jobs.

What more is there left to achieve?
Nicky: We haven’t cracked America yet at all. America is something we will never give up on.
Kian: To be honest America -I don’t think its going to happen. Perhaps in a few years and the playlist has shifted we will have more luck.
Mark: America is a fabulous place to holiday and somewhere in the world we can go and not get recognised maybe we should keep it that way.

Finally boys what re you plans for Christmas?
Mark:
Eat, drink and be merry - the usual.
Nicky: Christmas dinner will be most likely at our house this year Bertie, Miriam and Cecilia and the perspectives, will come over. I think Miriam is on dinner cooking duty.
Shane: It will be Nicole’s second Christmas and we are very excited about it. My best friend Keith is getting married two days after Christmas, and I’m the best man, so it will be one big hooley!
Kian: After the celebrations have died down, I think I’ll head off on a surf trip with Jodi and surf by day and rest by night.

You have a great life.
Kian: Some people might say so

Westlife TopU2 In The Charts - 1 December 2006

Teenyboppers Westlife have outsold rock veterans U2 to move to the coveted No1 spot in the Irish and British charts with their new collection, The Love Album. After enjoying a chart-topper with their current single, The Rose, Shane, Nicky, Mark and Kian return to the top once more with a selection of 11 romantic ballads. Songs include You Light Up My Life, All or Nothing, The Dance and All Out of Love joined by songbird Delta Goodrem on vocals.

Over the past eight years the vocal group clocked up global record sales in excess of 35 million, including 14 number one selling singles in the British charts. Westlife have collected Record of the Year title in Britain on four occasions and are hailed as the most successful boyband of the 21st century.

Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam are the most successful Irish rockers of all times. U2's farewell collection for Island Records is hailed as the band's definitive 'best of' which spans hit tracks from their debut album Boy back in 1980 to the current album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb released in 2004. On U218 Singles they have added golden gems such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Beautiful Day and the current hit release The Saints Are Coming with Green Day. U2 ended their Vertigo tour to an end in Honolulu on Saturday night, before returning to the recording studio to record their debut album for the Mercury label. While Westlife top the album chart, U2 can claim the number one position in the DVD chart with U218, a series of promotion video clips over the Island years.

Starry, Starry Night… - 1 December 2006

By Graham Walker
WAKEY, wakey…rise and shine. Have we got a bed for YOU!
Robbie Williams, Posh and Becks, Shania Twain, Neil Diamond, Ronan Keating and Elvis Costello have all slept in THIS bed. Not at the same time of course. Oh, and add to that list members of Westlife, Darkness, Blue, Five and Girls Aloud.

It's the massive King Size bunk where all the big names have spent the night, in Room 217, over the past nine years at The Hilton Sheffield. And we're now giving you the chance to own it - while helping to raise money for needy children in our region. It is one of the money-can't-buy items going under the hammer during the annual Hallam FM Charity Auction in aid of Help a Hallam Child, tomorrow, Friday, December 1, 9am to 6pm. There will be over 100 items auctioned live on Hallam FM.

The Hilton Sheffield, which boasts 128 bedrooms, is undergoing a huge makeover. Its 250-delegate Victoria Quays Suite, seven other meeting rooms, The Quays Restaurant, bar and lounge have already been revamped. The Premier Livingwell Health Club's gym area, locker rooms and pool side showers are being redecorated, while 48 bedrooms, including balcony executive rooms and Hilton guest rooms are being fully refurbished, with a contemporary feel.

But the hotel was preparing to throw out its most famous bed - until The Star stepped in, with a request to use it to help others. Hilton Sheffield manager Tom Waldron-Lynch and his staff are aiming to raise £4,500 this year for their own Hilton In The Community Foundation, much of it to help local children. So they are happy to see the bed help more children in our area.

Tom said: "It's probably the most famous bed in the city. All the big names who have appeared at the Arena and other Sheffield venues, while staying here at the Hilton, have slept in it.

"The list goes on and on. But the most famous of all are Robbie Williams, the Beckhams, Shania Twain, Neil Diamond, Ronan Keating and Elvis Costello.

"Members of some of the biggest pop bands on the planet have also slept in it - but not at the same time, might I add.

"We're talking about the likes of Westlife, Darkness, Blue, Five and Girls Aloud. I don't know which member of the band got the bed.

"We are already raising lots of money for communities. But thanks to The Star this will now raise even more money for local children."
